Into Shadows and Escaping Ash by @StormRidden
A bit about the author:
StormRidden is a graphics artist and writer with special interests in dystopian and high fantasy. She also enjoys travelling, singing, learning languages, and coffee.
Title:
It's a good, poetic title, and fits the story well. It just feels way too long for me. And yes, I tend to have long titles myself, but this one just feels like it's too long, like it's a duology in one volume or something.
Cover:
The cover evokes a great feel for the story and fits your work as well. My only suggestion is maybe do some special things with the fonts to make the title stand out more or something.
Blurb:
Your blurb is excellent. Gave me chills while reading and made me want to read your story. Fantastic work on that one.
The Good:
Your use of prose and narration was very well done; I was able to get into Iridian's character from Chapter 1 (something that usually takes me longer), and your descriptions were always beautifully written. Your introduction of other people was also logical, and your world-building was well-thought out and interesting to read, especially with Iridian being called many other names. Your story flowed logically with no plot-holes either.
The Bad:
Lots of typos and punctuation errors. Not bad enough to make me quit reading, but they need some attention. Also many places, your wording was awkward and I would have to reread lines to understand what you were trying to say. My only other critique at this stage is to make your characters have more personality. Iridian is very well-written, but the others felt shallow to me and I had trouble getting into them. Remi was pretty good, but like Dan and Theron felt awkward. Also, while you did a fantastic job explaining the destruction of the earth, I felt like many details that would have helped your story make more sense were missing and I'd have to make up theories to explain the pieces that were missing. Maybe that's coming on later in the story though.
What the Reader Thought:
Overall, a fairly enjoyable story, even if it's a little out of my comfort zone in terms of genre and writing style. I cannot imagine myself ever being able to write in first person present tense, so that alone amazed me--not to mention you pulled it off very well. Things I didn't care for were your tendency to go to the extreme in describing rather dark/gross things; there's nothing wrong with that at all, but there needs to be a balance with the not so dark things as well. You'd go into full detail with something very little (Like Iridian stealing very-specifically-described clothes from the store in a destroyed town) and then skim over what I personally thought should have been more described indepth. Also, it didn't make sense for Iridian to take other deities' names in vain since she's one herself. I mean, I don't go around saying Oh my Aria or anything.
So yeah, I fairly enjoyed this story, and I think you have a lot of potential with it. While I do have some issues with it, I am interested to see where you will take this in the upcoming chapters. Good job!
