Chapter One
"No no no!" Quinn wailed at her parents. "You can't! You can't just do this! No no!"
Eight year old Quinn's whole world was falling apart around her. A divorce? She couldn't understand it, but if it meant she and her parents couldn't stay all together forever and ever then she was against the idea! Her mother put a gentle hand on her daughter's shoulder. "Sweetheart..." She murmured. "Your father and I just don't enjoy each other's company like we used to... Things are better this way, you'll see."
"But..."
Tears started to gather in the corners of Quinn's large blue eyes.
"No no... This isn't fair!!"
"Quinn! Wait!"
Tears blurred her vision as she ran from the house, tearing through the yard and down the street towards the park, not even knowing where she was running to. This wasn't right...! She wouldn't stand for this...! Her family was breaking up..!
It just wasn't fair!
Sobbing, she ran farther and farther until she fell to her knees beside the swing set at the neighborhood park, weeping hysterically and throwing her small fists to the sand.
"It's not fair," she screamed. "It's not fair...! It's not fair!"
She cried until her stomach hurt, eventually sitting on the swing set to cry her heart out.
By the time the sun had ducked below the hilltops in the distance, Quinn had run out of tears to cry.
Nothing was going her way...
It wasn't fair...
"... Hey."
Quinn raised her head in surprise to see that the swing beside hers was now being occupied by a strange, short, red headed boy seemingly around the same age as her. She blinked her big blue eyes, red from the crying, her red cheeks damp and sticky. "... Who are you?" She croaked. He spoke as if he hadn't heard her.
"Why are you crying?"
She stared at him for a moment, then her face crinkled up with the urge to cry again. "My family is breaking up..." She whimpered, sniffling. The boy simply looked at her, tilting his head as he eyed her carefully.
"Will you smile?"
Quinn sobbed. "No, no, I'll never smile again...!"
She cried once more, though more tears spilled over as she sniffled. The boy gazed at her in silence for a few moments before leaning towards her. "Ever?"
"Never ever never!"
"I can't do anything to make you smile again?"
"No no never!"
There was a moment of silence as the boy seemed to ponder something for a second. "... Can I try?"
She rubbed her irritated eyes. "It won't work!"
For a second, the atmosphere was still. When the boy didn't saying for a while, Quinn raised her head.
And it was within that short, unsuspecting moment of their eyes locking that Quinn's small, dampened face was taken in the small boy's hands, and in a matter of seconds, he'd leaned forward, pulling her towards him to kiss her on the lips.
For a moment, Quinn didn't move, frozen in shock. But thanks to that shock, she'd stopped crying. For just a second, she'd forgotten altogether why she was crying to begin with. After some time, the boy finally pulled away and looked closely into Quinn's face, eyeing her reaction. Her face grew red and she pulled herself away from him, falling from her swing into the sand in the process. "W-Why'd you do that?!" She stammered in disbelief. Rather than answer, the boy smiled and said, "You stopped crying."
