ChapterFive

September 2020

Amanda got in the lunch line. She saw Andrew talking to several people over some weird-looking thing in their hands. It seemed like it was a phone that had no buttons.

She knew she needed to try to make some friends. She noticed the weird-looking guy sitting by himself. Then she eyed the blonde guy sitting with Andrew and two girls. Sure, she was in another school and a totally different time period. Both guys seemed interesting enough to talk to.

Amanda walked towards the strange guy's table when a girl stood in front of her.

"Yes?" Amanda asked.

The girl replied, "Rumor has it that he has a thing for this Alanna girl."

Amanda raised an eyebrow. "Okay. And?"

"She's a witch."

Amanda rolled her eyes, and muttered, "I swear humanity evolved by now."

"Not really. I'm still normal."

She gestured to the girl to walk over to an empty table. They both sat down, and Amanda said, "Okay, I know a lot can happen between 2006 and 2020. But did humanity do something to where people now have superpowers? I swear I'm living in Doctor Who these days."

"You know The Doctor is played by a woman, right?"

Amanda's blue eyes widened. "Really? I guess that's kind of cool."

"A lot definitely changed."

"I seriously think something happened to humanity! Why do they all suddenly have strange hair and superpowers? I bet some virus came and turned everyone into these...what? Mutants? God, that now sounds like the X-Men movies!"

Amanda looked at the girl, who seemed stunned by such statements. She sighed, "I'm Amanda."

"Lily," the girl said cautiously.

"Yeah, that's what I think . A virus came and it forced all of humanity to become mutants."

"Well, there was a virus. It's still around, but..."

"What is a mutant?" Amanda looked up to see the strange guy standing next to the table.

Amanda smirked. A part of her did find him attractive, but why? I think I need to stop watching so much anime.

"What's your name?" she asked.

"Nikolai," he replied nonchalantly.

"I'm Amanda," she greeted by sticking her hand out to shake his hand.

He just stood there, staring at her hand as if she stuck it in a pile of poop. She retracted her hand as he asked, "So what's a mutant?"

"Supposedly a person who gains superpowers due to some strange virus," she replied.

Nikolai blinked, and said, "I'm a fae, not this mutant thing."

Amanda's eyes widened. None of this made sense to her. Did humans really evolve that much? Maybe Derrick and Alyson were right. This was the future's world, and she was living in it.

                                                                        >>>>>>>>>

Amanda stared at the ceiling of her room. She could feel her head was about to explode. There was a virus, or still is, in 2020, but how much damage did it do? Was it more than enough to splinter humanity off into different groups? Did they really gain special powers? Hell, was there even discrimination towards these supposed witches and faes and normals?

"Amanda?" she heard Andrew's voice on the other side of the curtain.

"You can pull the curtain," she said.

Andrew did just that, and said on her bed.

"You okay?" he asked.

"There's a virus, and it turns people into other species."

Andrew raised an eyebrow. He laughed nervously, "Maybe you shouldn't be watching anime and Doctor Who?"

"That's what I think, but no. Something's weird."

He said in an amused tone, "I saw you talk to that weird guy."

"And?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

"You think he's cute?"

She felt her face warming up. "I mean, he's interesting."

He smirked, "I mean, he is cute, but I think the Gideon guy could be cuter. I'm thinking about trying to get him a makeover. He could definitely use one."

Amanda sat up in her bed. "You sound like Alyson."

Andrew sighed, "I miss Alyson."

"I miss Alex."

"Hell, I miss everyone."

"I wanna go back home."

"Same here."

They both laid down; Amanda on her pillow, and Andrew on her legs. She looked at her friend, who did the same. They tore each other from the stare. It was like there was a hint of feelings for each other. No, they were good friends now. They moved on from each other since they broke up when he was fifteen, and she was sixteen.

Then again, they were in the future. Anything could happen in 2020, apparently.
