Chapter 8
When the wolves reached their home, Jeronah pulled Anthony and Margo aside. The angel waited for the others to enter before voicing his concerns.
"You told us not to reveal our true selves. I understand that we broke your rules and I didn't see another option. I am not questioning your strengths; I simply saw an opportunity to help." Jeronah lowered his head, thinking they would be angry but Margo rested a gentle hand on his arm.
"Don't worry Jeronah. I doubt that Reyana would tell anyone about you being in this world. After all, she is trying to kill Jacota, and she wasn't very loud about that. She has kept herself hidden for so many years, instead of ruling over the wolves like she could have done with the powers she stole. If she had Jacota's powers, I'm sure she would have used that to her advantage. Instead, she kept hidden and let everyone believe that the Gods died. I don't know what she is up to, but having you, Veronica, and Meloras here is a good thing." Margo smiled and followed Sam into the house.
"Thank you again," Anthony patted his shoulder. "Things might have got nasty if you didn't step in."
Meloras stood by her soulmate's side when Anthony followed his wife.
"Next time you jump in front of a crazed werewolf God, please warn me," she chuckled and sank into his side when he wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"For some reason, I felt compelled to help. The angels are tied to Jacota, I can feel it."
"He's a unique person, that's for sure."
"Hey mum," Margo greeted Flora with a kiss on her forehead.
"Tell me everything," Flora sat with a fresh pot of tea, offering a cup to William who refused, not trusting her after she accidentally spiked his brother. Sam took a cup, hoping it was spiked. There was too much crazy in his life. Day after day, something new and dangerous would appear, but Sam is in no position to complain as he thrives off the excitement; it's in a werewolves nature after all.
"I'm going to see if Jay is okay." Scott headed up the stairs, thinking his son returned to his bedroom. Scott understood that Jacota was forced to have a stronger mind, a sharper mind, one that could handle stress more than any person ever should. Often, Scott regrets not telling Jacota about who he truly was, thinking he could have prepared him for this life. He can't change the past, but the guilt of making wrong decisions will always haunt him.
"Boys?" Scott asked and knocked on the bedroom door. He didn't hear a response before looking into their room. The light material of the curtains flowed against the breeze, but there was no evidence that the boys returned. The bathroom was empty as Scott turned, looking down the corridor. "Jacota, Hunter?"
"Are they not here?" Jeronah asked, returning to his post outside the bedroom door.
"I don't think so. Why would the boys not come home?"
"Maybe they need time to themselves."
"But nowhere is safe for them," Scott pulled out his phone and tried calling his son. Of course, there was no answer. "I don't want to be breathing down his neck all the time, but I'm worried about him."
"I understand. My son was constantly in trouble. Angels used to watch over him for me when I was stuck in heaven. They would report to me about the mischief he got up to, and all I could do was shake my head and let him carry on. Eventually, he found the right path." Jeronah smiled, wishing Kaiden was with him and Meloras.
"This life is very new to Jay; he's still trying to cope." Scott made his way down to the kitchen and to his disappointment, his son was still not home.
Flora and Alfred watched him whisper something to Anthony.
"The boys are not back," Alfred thought to his mate.
"No, but they are doing what they think is right," Flora replied while patting his knee. "I'm not worried about it."
"Where do you think they've gone?" Anthony asked Scott who shook his head with a shrug. "I'll send my pack to look for them. Sam?"
Sam diverted his eyes from William and stood up.
"Yes?"
"Try to get in touch with Hunter. He might be in danger."
The conversation in the room stopped. Margo hurried to her husband, wanting to know more while Sam tried calling for Hunter, feeling the stress of his beta status. He couldn't cope if he wasn't there to protect his alpha.
* * * * *
Hunter and Jacota walked through the woods, hand in hand. They didn't say a word because Jacota needed the silence to concentrate on finding Reyana. The sky was guiding him, and he followed his gut feeling.
"Almost there, my fingers are tingling again," Jacota thought.
"Okay-"
"Boys?"
Hunter and Jacota spun on their heels. Their hearts almost jumped out of their chests, but it was only Veronica.
"What are you doing here?" Hunter frowned.
"I followed you, obviously." Veronica walked closer with crossed arms. "Going in this alone is not a good idea. You need back up in case that God woman goes for your mate. Do bonds work the same in this world? If one of you dies, you both die?"
Jacota nodded.
"It's not safe for any of us." Looking at Hunter, they both agreed on the same plan.
"If you stay out of sight and let Reyana think we came alone, she is more likely to attack, but she won't be prepared for you. I don't know what demons can do or whatever-"
Veronica took a step forward and pushed Hunter in the chest with both of her hands. The werewolf flew through the woods and landed on the leaves with a thud. He coughed as the air left his lungs and Jacota hurried to his side.
"Sorry, I didn't actually mean to push you so hard, but you get what I was trying to prove. I'm strong, and my strengths won't let you down." Veronica then walked away, putting a safe distance between her and the boys.
Hunter climbed to his feet, insisting that he felt fine, apart from his pride. He scowled when his mate looked somewhat entertained.
"I knew she was gonna do that," he said and started walking.
"Sure," Jacota smiled when he turned his back. His entertainment didn't last for long when he felt the tingling in his fingers again. Jacota gripped Hunter's hand.
"Reyana?" he said out loud, stopping when he knew she was close enough to see them.
"We have come to settle this. You're not going to ruin our lives." Hunter looked around. He could hear the crunching of leaves, but he couldn't see the Goddess of water.
"Settle what?" a voice appeared from the trees. "You're dead either way."
"What is so special about being the most powerful?" Hunter was yelling at nothing. "It doesn't matter anyway because you're not killing my mate!"
Seconds later, Reyana was standing in front of the boys, her face contorted in a menacing way.
"Coming back for more?" Reyana reached down towards the ground, and the moister in the floor sucked out of the dirt as it crumbled, the leaves as they hardened and cracked, and the roots as the bark of the trees cried for water. "I warned you. I have killed you once, and I can kill you again."
Jacota showed his power in return; the lightning bolts twisted furiously around his hands and Hunter's hand. Their fingers stayed firmly intertwined.
"And I understand that your mate isn't fond of water." Reyana lifted her hand. "Drowning is his worst fear."
Jacota tried to pull Hunter behind him, but his mate was stubborn and refused to be protected. The teen watched the sky, trying to fight off the clouds as Reyana summoned the rain. Although, he needed the electricity.
"Why does your daughter not have your powers?" Jacota asked when he sensed Cordelia's smell.
"She doesn't deserve them. She is not worthy, or ready. Also, my daughter has not yet been paired with a mate, so it is impossible for her to have my powers now. She missed the lunar cycle."
Jacota then noticed Cordelia peeking through the trees. She covered her mouth and ducked. He wondered if her mother could smell her, but a thought boosted his confidence. Maybe he is stronger than Reyana in ways he hasn't noticed.
"She hasn't found a mate?" Hunter questioned. "I heard Jay's voice a few days after I turned eighteen."
"She hasn't found one." Reyana crossed her arms. Her daughter's scent only just reached her, and that was because Cordelia stood right behind her.
Jacota stepped closer to Hunter. If Cordelia had no powers, how did she teleport?
"I have," Cordelia spoke small like she was nervous.
Turning, Reyana almost yelled, "What are you doing here?"
"To tell you what I've been lying about this entire time." Cordelia lowered her head. "I have found my mate, and I received your powers on the last day of the lunar cycle. Your powers are slowly fading. I can feel myself getting stronger when I'm around you."
Reyana looked like a vein would pop on her forehead and steam should be pouring from her ears.
"You're lying," she said through gritted teeth. "You would have told me."
"You and dad are the only werewolves who don't want their daughter to find a mate. You knew you would lose your powers and then this stupid battle with Jacota would end. I don't want him dead; I want to be on the side of the wolves, and I want to win this war. That's why I'm here. You didn't want a child, I get that, but you're handling everything wrong." Cordelia tried to rest a hand on her mother's shoulder, but Reyana smacked it away, hard enough for her daughter's knuckles to sting.
"How could you do this to me?" she yelled. "They are my powers, given to me five hundred years ago!" Reyana turned and lifted her hands again, staring deep into Jacota's eyes. "If you won't kill him, then I will!"
The boys flinched when they expected something to happen. However, nothing changed, and Reyana screeched with anger. She raised a hand above her head to hit her child, but nobody had noticed a white wolf running up behind the ex-Goddess of water.
The wolf snarled and bit Reyana's hand, pulling her to the grounds as its sharp teeth embedded into her skin. Cordelia stood back out of shock when her father's wolf appeared from the woods and pounced on the other wolf.
"No!" Cordelia cried when Reef bit the other wolf's neck. She turned into a wolf and fought against her dad as the boys moved back, not wanting to interfere. Reyana also turned and paired with her mate to hurt the mystery wolf. They growled, drew blood, and slashed with sharp claws.
"Well," a voice said behind the boys, making them jump. Veronica pushed her way in between them with crossed arms. "This is not what I expected."
