Chapter 2 - The Heath Sisters
Out in the depths of the woods there was a soft glow of candlelight, giving warmth to the silvery moonlight above. The light was our beacon, drawing us to the others. I almost broke into a sprint when I spotted it, Anna dragging me to slow down for the woods were known for playing with ones mind.
I broke out into the clearing first, the familiar knee-high grass and wildflowers brushing my legs as I dragged Anna across the clearing to our trusty witch friends. The Heath sisters were awaiting our arrival in front of the ancient mirror propped against an even older tree, the older of the two doing finale inspections while the younger one played with leaves in the wind.
"Beth!" Anna shouted as she pushed past me, eager to hug her best friend.
"Anna!" The younger of the sisters shouted as Anna practically tackled her, the leaves falling as Beth's control over them vanished.
"Hey! Watch the candles you two!!" The older one, Lia, yelled at the two teenagers laughing on the ground. Her sapphire eyes dull with annoyance as she surveyed the area for any other disturbances.
Lia made a few marks on the mirror, I only recognized one, a runic symbol of change. She stepped away from it and turned to face us, Anna and Beth struggling to get up, Lia calmly looked at us as a light breeze tickled her dark red hair.
"The spell is almost complete, but before you three go I have some things for you all since I am not crossing with you." She had a somewhat grim smile on her face as she held her empty hands out to Beth, except when they were fully extended a light brown wooden staff appeared. The staff grew as Beth brought it to her side with a smile, the growing only stopping once it's height matched that of it's holder, being a whooping 5'3" tall.
"A bulwark staff, for if you ever need protection from those close to you." Lia added wistfully, turning to Anna, holding her hands out again.
This time a dark wooden longbow and quiver of arrows appear as her hands reached Anna. My sister took the bow and slid the quiver over her head, its light leather strap taking a bit of the poofiness out of her pink sweater with its weight.
"For you, The Bow of Clarity and Arrows of Parity, for moments you seek balance from afar." God Lia really is starting to sound like some old oracle with these messages, though from the look in her eye they were not to be taken lightly.
"And you, the one who needs my gift the most," she turned to me with on of the most serious looks I've seen in my life and held her arms out to me, "for without it you shall surely fall."
In her arms before me appeared two sheathed swords, they were technically in one single sheath that formed an X with straps that did the same hanging down. I took the gift and admired the craftsmanship of the handles and sheath itself but not daring to pull the blades out, carefully I got the sheath onto my back and the straps to cross my chest correctly.
"For someone with your specialties I present the Pazeme Twin Blades, for the times when your fire goes out in a battle," Lia looked me in the eye with a grim look as she spoke, "but be warned that no one has ever used them without consequence."
I nodded, knowing what the warning meant, and Lia dropped her arms down to her side. The look on her face said it was time to do it.
The sisters both grabbed a side of the mirror, Lia on the left and Beth on the right, and held their other hand out towards us. I looked at Anna, took a deep breath and took both A's and Lia's hands while Beth took A's other hand.
We all closed our eyes, the Heath sisters to concentrate on casting the spell they whispered, me and Anna because they were channeling us for the spell. So we closed our eyes because our energy was being sapped from us by a mirror.
The longer they whispered the more lightheaded I got, by the time they stopped I had almost reached my breaking point. My knees began to buckle underneath me as Lia released my hand and I opened my eyes, but all I could see was black and I could feel myself falling but it seemed as if I were in a cold void of darkness. I fell to my knees hard enough for my teeth to clatter and the void to retreat, I was looking up at the sky as my vision returned. I could see a few constellations in the cloudless night sky as I blinked the tired tears away, I sighed and looked around for the first time.
One glance was all it took for me to know without a doubt that the spell had worked, for nothing I saw was familiar. I got off the ground slowly, cautious of what may be in the waiting in the woods for a nice midnight snack. I dusted my jeans off and glanced behind me, almost yelping when I saw Anna getting to her feet with Beth already up behind her.
"Welcome..." Beth started as she brushed off her light green skirt "to The Silent Forest." She hit her staff on the ground and the wind picked up, her skirt and hair flowing beautifully with it.
"Ahh that's much better!" She sighed as the breeze weakened, smiling at herself.
"Mhm" Beth cleared her throat before continuing' "now, follow me!" She exclaimed with her singsong voice as she set off past us.
I pulled the strap of my bag forward, looked at Anna and held my right hand out to her. Once she took it I turned back to the path in front of us and started following Beth through the forest.
