Chapter Twenty
When his plane landed all the passengers had to stay seated and wait for a gate to open. By the time they opened the doors Caleb had pushed his way from the very back of the plane to the front, he was the first to get off.
He made his way through the airport and grabbed a taxi to take him to the center of the city. Athens was a crowed city with narrow streets. Its buildings towered over each other until they couldn't get any taller.
He reached down to his backpack to try and look like he was trying to find something, but he was really helping a little sparrow get comfy.
"That plane was horrible," Buka squawked.
Caleb shushed her moved some stuff around to cover the noise.
She shot him a dirty look. "You know he can't hear me, right? We're completely silent to anyone not affiliated with the gods."
"I don't care. Now shh." He tried coughing to cover it up, but the driver was giving him strange looks.
He gave him a quick smile then turned to look out the window. His foot was tapping aggressively, and he could hardly wait to get out of the taxi and find Pandora's box. He was too antsy to focus on anything.
"So, uh... just to clarify, all we know about where the box is that it's in Athens, and it's in a statue?" he asked.
Chaac sighed. "Yes, that is all we know."
"Then how are we going to find it?"
He scoffed. "Zeus hid the box, correct?"
"I don't know. Did we go over this?"
Despite not being able to see him, Caleb knew Chaac's disappointment and could sense his face fall. "Zeus hid the box because he didn't trust Pandora or any other gods to hid it. Now tell me what is Zeus the god of."
"Lightning?"
"Yes, and what am I the god of?"
"Storms?" Caleb was having trouble hiding his fear from the driver.
"Be more exact." Chaac was getting more frustrated by the second.
He perked up slightly. "Lightning?"
His voice was filled with condescending joy. "Yes! Good job!"
"How does that help us?" His head dropped.
Chaac cried out in frustration. "Objects important to Zeus are more likely to be struck by lightning, so we can summon a storm, and follow the lightning."
Caleb raised an eyebrow. "Are you serious?"
"Yes! Now do it!"
He jumped, but quickly relaxed. He put his hands on his knees, started patted a beat, and tied to look discreet. The skies darkened, and rain pattered on the window to Caleb's beat. As his hand continued the rain came down harder. Thunder rolled through the shy and the driver cussed.
He was dropped off in a large square. He heard a loud clap of thunder and turned towards the sound. He watched without moving a muscle until he saw a flash of lightning. He quickly let Buka out of his bag and started walking to the lightning.
"Did you see that man's name tag?" she asked, perched on his shoulder.
Caleb raised an eyebrow. "Does that matter?"
She ignored him. "He had such a peculiar name. I can't even pronounce it."
"Like Buka is any better." He let out a stiff laugh.
"Well it's not like I chose it!" She took off from his shoulder and hovered right in front of his face.
He quickly grabbed her and put her back on his shoulder. "Well then your parents are bad at choosing names."
She let out a snooty laugh. "They didn't choose it either. A god did."
"Wait. What?"
"Yep." Her bird head bobbed up and down in what he assumed was a nod. "Gods are petty, and if someone knew you were a form for a certain loathed someone they might summon you as a familiar just to torture you, so your god will give you another name to protect you."
"Oh..."
They walked in silence until another flash of light flooded the streets. Caleb ran to where the lightning struck. Others were hiding from the rain, ducking into buildings, and under terraces. They each gave him dirty looks as he ran through the storm, with some sort of excitement.
The tall buildings shortened and the streets narrowed. The buildings started to look older and more rotten. He ran until the buildings looked like they were from ancient times.
Lightning flashed again, it struck only a few blocks away. He picked up pace and ran fast enough to knock Buka off his shoulder. He soon came into a small square and waited for lightning to strike again.
Lightning and thunder rang in unison to his right. He ran down the street and came to a large building with a small garden in front. In the middle of the garden was a tall statue of Zeus in a frightening pose. The plants around the statue were black and smoking.
Buka finally caught up to Caleb and landed on his head. "Is this it?"
"I'm not sure," he admitted.
"Well let's blow it up!" She took off from his head and flew around in excitement.
He pursed his lips. "Maybe we shouldn't destroy it. It's pretty old and probably pricele-"
"Shut up and destroy it!" Chaac screamed.
Caleb jumped back and nearly fell. He regained his balance, and sighed, then clapped his hands together. A lightning bolt came down and struck the statue. Thunder rang out, the statue shattered in millions of pieces, and Caleb and Buka fell to the ground.
He pushed himself from the ground and stared at the carnage. Within the rubble was a small black box. Buka and him exchanged a quick glance before they lurched forward and stumbled for the box. Caleb picked it up and dusted it off while Buka yelled at him.
"We found it! We found it! It was out first guess and we found it!" Her wings were flapping faster than a humming bird's.
"Calm down! We don't even know if it is Pandora's box," he said.
She landed on his shoulder and dug her talons into his skin. "Well what other boxes are stuck in statues?"
"Good point."
The box was made of what looked like metallic plants. It was covered in holes from where the vines didn't connect. The inside seemed hollow and could be seen clearly through each of the holes. The hinges were the only place more than one vine connected.
Caleb laid his hand on the top and tried to open it to get a better view of the inside of the box.
"Don't open it!" Buka moved from his shoulder to his head, grabbed a fist full of his hair, and tried to fly away with it.
He nearly fell backwards thanks to the sudden pull. "Okay! Okay! Let go!"
She let go of his hair then perched herself on the box. "Do you have any idea what could happen if you opened this? Millions could die! You'd release every demon every captured! You could cause an apocalypse worse than the one Berstuk wants to bring. Why do you think so many gods and demons are afraid of this thing? Do you ever think before you ac..." She stopped suddenly, staring behind Caleb.
He turned to where she was facing and saw a girl standing there. She was tall and thin with a weak chin. Her hair was long and purple with bangs that were brushed to the side. Her eyes were a light brown and freckles dotted her face. She wore black skinning jeans and a black blouse. She stared at Caleb with a small smile pulling on her lips.
He turned towards her sheepishly. "C-can I help you?" he asked.
She gave him a quick smile and glanced back behind her. A group of people followed her to the building, with someone at the head holding a long stick with a bright bandanna tied to it. She made her way into the group, but she didn't break eye contact. Caleb stood watching her and the group for a minute. He sweared he saw her mouth something to him, something about staying put. In fear of disobeying her he sat on a nearby bench.
"What are you doing?" Buka asked.
"She may be a goddess and I don't want to anger her," he whispered.
"That makes no sense!"
"Yes, it does." He clutched the box to his chest and shewed Buka away.
The group walked around the building for a minute before stopping in front of where the statue used to be. He could hear the leader say something that sounded like an apology, but they were speaking in a language he couldn't understand. Soon the group split up around the building. Some took pictures, others sat down, and the purple haired girl strolled up to Caleb.
"Oh, good you found it!" she chimed.
He looked around, confused. "Found what?"
She smiled and sat down next to him. "Pandora's box, of course!"
Like I said: nothing to do but write.
On a different note, we've reached 30,000 words! Woo! I would like to give (another) special thanks to @Zevaldrina (Lady Konie Everstar I) and a big thank you to all of you you've read my story. I really appreciated it!
