Chapter Twelve
A loud snap echoed through the streets of St Petersburg. Caleb jumped back when the girl who snapped suddenly disappeared, but he jumped even higher when he realized everyone else was gone except for a girl who worked for Berstuk.
"Okay... then..." he muttered to no one in particular.
The girl was standing in the shadow of a building and couldn't be seen all that well. Caleb clenched his fists in anticipation for when this girl would attack but she didn't move. He squinted slightly, trying to get a better look and he could have sworn the girl was growing taller.
"Dang it," Chaac muttered.
"'Dang it?' Dang what? What are you danging?" Caleb was getting a little antsy as the girl kept growing taller, but it wasn't just her height that was changing, her legs seemed to be growing darker and wider.
"I've fought this woman time and time again, and she is quite the pest."
He stepped back slowly. "Who is she?"
"Her name is Jorogumo. She's the 'goddess' of spiders, though I don't think she deserves that title."
The girl slowly stepped into the light and Caleb almost screamed at the sight of her. The whole bottom half of her body had been replaced with eight black spindly legs, and a spider's abdomen. Her eyes have gone from a dark brown to pitch black and her teeth now looked like fangs.
"Nope!" Caleb almost screamed. He ran down the street and didn't look back at the giant spider running after him.
He ran as fast as his legs could carry him but fear made him go faster. He could hear the spider's legs crash against the pavement as she ran after him. Her breaths were loud and shaky which made her sound hungry and violent.
His legs were starting to grow tired and he could feel himself getting slower. He knew at any minute Jorogumo would catch up to him and he would be done for.
His heart was beating faster than he thought it could when he stopped dead in his tracks. In front of him was a giant spider web the he couldn't see through. There were spiders completely coating the thing to the point where it looked more black than white. Caleb glanced around to see that any alleyway between him and Jorogumo was blocked in a similar fashion.
He swallowed hard and looked back at the spider-woman, she was a while down the street. He had time. Caleb clenched his hand into a tight fist and the sky began to darken.
Joroguma didn't hesitate at the sudden weather and kept going strong. Caleb closed his eyes tightly and started tapping slightly. He listened to the soft patter of a light rain that was now pouring down and the distance rumble of thunder. He held his breath and when he heard Joroguma come near he shot his eyes open, clapped his hands as loudly as possible.
Lightning struck the spider web behind him causing it to erupt in flames. Another web was struck, then another, and another. The last lightning strike was one that was cast right in-between Caleb and the spider woman.
Joroguma fell to the ground and began wailing in distress. The rain began to come down harder as Caleb tried to put out the flames. Once the web behind him was only smoldering he dashed through it without a second thought. He could hear Joroguma's wails and her legs smashing on the ground.
He looked around then ran into a dark alleyway. He slowly crept behind a dumpster and slumped against a building. Blood began to wash down his hand and down a river a rain water. He looked at his hand and found cracks all along his wrist. The cracks reminded him of lightning in a way, with their main line and branches coming off it in a destructive manner.
The cracks started to sting, and burn to the point where he had to wave it away from himself, splashing blood over everything. While the blood was flowing, he heard another loud scream from Joroguma.
His heart started racing and he could hear its beat in his head. The crashing of Joroguma walk became louder, and louder. He held his breath as another frustrated scream was heard.
His arm began to move away from him as if it had a mind of its own. He finally noticed its movement when it banged itself against the brick wall of the building causing him to cry out in pain.
Joroguma screamed again and this time she seemed happy, but it returned to its miserable tone with the clouds settled on the ground. Caleb stood up and bolted down the alleyway as quietly as possible. Each step made a click too loud for comfort but Joroguma seemed to think otherwise. She started making an array of horrible and ugly noises. She would make a stuffed sniffing noise, then a hiss, then a gargle of sorts. Each new sound left Caleb in more panic than the last.
As he wandered through the fog he knew Joroguma was getting closer and he wished she didn't sound so blood thirsty. Caleb needed to see her. He didn't care what would happen to see her but he would not die blind.
He stopped suddenly and took a slow deep breath then clapped his hands together. A flash of light fled through the streets. He saw a large black smudge not far away, the smudge seemed to be moving unnaturally fast for something of its size.
Thunder screamed and Caleb joined in when he felt a sharp pain creeping up his arm. He fell to his knees with a thud, and felt the blood pool around him. A loud laughing scream echoed through the streets as Caleb felt spiders crawling on him. He was too scared to move so the spiders crawled on to him without an obstacle.
They started to spin their webs around him setting him up like a fly in their trap. Caleb tried to move but he was stuck in place, he put all his strength into breaking his arm free. He felt larger spiders crawling on him and he grew more desperate by the second.
His arm tore through the webs and he slammed it against the ground as hard as he could. The air began to stir and the trees began to rustle. A few spiders fell off him and blew away with the growing wind.
The webs that were wrapped around him began to peel off and the spiders were thrown without a care. The fog began to blow away and Caleb could almost see through the webs. Another horrible screech was barely heard over the wind as Joroguma mourned her fallen family.
The webs were blown away leaving Caleb facing a sad, and angry goddess. He stood up slowly as Joroguma hissed and screamed at him. The goddess raced towards him in a fit of anger and stood above him with such sadness in her eyes. Caleb didn't break eye contact when he stomped on the ground as hard as he could.
Rain began to pour down again, lightning and thunder roared at the same time when they came down on Joroguma. She wailed in pain and sprawled her limbs all over the place. The woman's dress caught aflame then her hair and then the hair of the spider. The woman screamed and shrieked as she burned and Caleb only watched in horror. He could feel pain leaking up to his shoulder and blood smoking into his shirt, but he couldn't take his eyes off the burning figure.
"Good job." Chaac sounded genially impressed for what Caleb has doomed upon this child.
"I didn't want this..."
He stood unmoving until Joroguma was nothing more than a pile of ashes and bones. Caleb looked down at his hands. Blood was pouring off of one yet the other one was clean. He closed his eyes knowing that it wasn't true, that he had more than his own blood on his hands now.
I don't know how much more violent I can get before I have to make this mature. Anyhow we're almost to 20,000 words (we're at 19,499)! I think well get to that in the next chapter so I'll thank everybody then but I will thank you all for reading.
