Chapter Thirty
Without acknowledging Theodor or Corrine, the group of gods each held something out to Berstuk. A tall buff boy held out what looked like a silver apple. Another boy next to him held a wooden flute. A slim girl had a mirror that didn't show any refection, only what looked like fog. The boy next to her held a plain ring, and the last boy had a human eye.
Berstuk, without looking away from Theodor nodded to the side. The gods walked to where he nodded and dropped the objects in a pile. Berstuk glanced at them once, let himself relax, then turned to them.
"I think it's about time to awake Kebechet," he said. "Get rid of the pests, would you?"
One of the boys gave Berstuk a smile then walked over to a pile of weapons and pulled a spear out. Theodor didn't wait for him to use it before he let frost form at his feet. The frost crept towards the boy, the other gods noticed, but did nothing. The second the frost touched the god's foot it crawled up his leg and creeped up him until he was engulfed in frost. The frost around the god's feet slowly turned to ice along with the rest of it. By the time Theodor was done, the god was stuck in a block of ice, unmoving and dead looking.
Berstuk turned back to Theodor and rose an eyebrow. "Having fun?"
He could only let out a squeak, but Corrine tossed Laverna aside and stood up. "Yep."
She ran for her sword and held it high. Berstuk only rolled his eyes and spoke with a breathy voice. "Get rid of them."
Laverna let out a giggle, but when Corrine spun around to face her, she was gone. She ignored the missing goddess and focused on the other gods. Berstuk had walked over to a pile and was rummaging through, neither her nor Theodor had the courage to stop him.
Two of the gods glanced at each other. They looked like they had a whole conversation without speaking. One of them looked to Corrine then brought his hand up. It burst with flames and he ran to Corrine, ready to hit her with his flaming hand. The other god slid past Corrine and picked up Laverna's bow and quiver.
She barely managed to dodge the god's hand, and tumbled to the ground. The god went to grab her, but she thrashed with her sword, cutting him in the arm. He fell back and while Corrine was standing up an arrow was shot at her. It nicked her leg, but she forced herself to her feet.
They muttered a curse before firing another arrow. Corrine flung herself out of its way, but fell onto the other god. He grabbed her arm, burring her skin. She screamed in pain, not knowing what else to do. She stuffed down her cries and jerked her arm. The god, caught off guard, fell with her arm, thrown to the side of the room and crashing into a pile of armor.
Theodor was standing with his back against a wall and two gods walking closer. His vision was fading, all he could see was the faded colors of the gods. In a panic, he let the ice around his feet to spread. Soon, the ground under the god's feet was slick ice, but they didn't react.
The goddess brought up her hands. They slowly turned black, and looked like they were dripping. Soon the shadows around her began to twist and turn, looking like contorting humans. All the shadows being cast soon turned into vaguely human shaped creatures. A few began crawling out of the walls and floors.
He tried pushing himself farther into the wall, but something grabbed his shoulders and pushed him to the ground. He rolled around, and saw one of the goddess's creatures coming out of what used to be his shadow.
"Hodr?" he asked, hoping the god had some sort of advice.
"They're the dead. That devil is the goddess Hel." He spoke with a tinge of anger in his voice.
He squinted at the creature and let the ice creep up the wall, freezing the beast. "That doesn't help me."
Theodor didn't move as he closed his eyes, giving up any hope of sight. He could feel the air around him cool and ice buildup around him. He heard the creatures scrambling over the ice before being frozen over. A small smile pulled on his lips as he felt the Adders stone's power. It left a small tingle in his hands, but Hel didn't stand a chance.
Corrine dodged another arrow and ran towards the god. He seemed amused by her persistence, but he didn't move away, he only put another arrow on his bow. When she reached him he still didn't move until she slashed at him. He dodged the blade without trouble then fired his arrow.
The arrow plunged into Corrine's shoulder. She fell to her knees and screamed in pain. The ground seemed to sway and the cold air heated up. She grabbed the arrow, ripped it out, scooped up some of Theodor's snow, and smeared it on her bleeding wound.
She tossed her sword to the other hand and got back on her feet. By now she didn't feel like the piloting her body. It felt like she backseat driving, giving suggestions, but them being ignored for something better.
The god stepped away from her, caught off guard by her calmness with being shot. Before he could react, Corrine grabbed the quiver by his feet and chucked it across the room. The god snapped back and tried to beat her with his bow, she merely dodged it and ran around him.
She kicked the back of his knees, causing him to fall. She put her foot on his back, holding him down. The god tried to fight back, but he couldn't anything. She felt a familiar feeling when she raised her sword high above her head, but this time nothing stopped her. Her sword went straight through the god's neck.
Corrine stumbled away from the body, breathing hard and tears pricking her eyes. She's done it again. Before she could try to run or do anything, she felt someone grab her and push her to the ground. She looked up to see Laverna standing over her.
"Don't be too proud," she said. "Ah Tabai was never that grand of a god."
She looked over her shoulder and nodded. Corrine tried to stand up, but Laverna stomped on her face, then her chest. The other god she was fighting came to stand over her. Laverna and the god looked at each other then he leaned down.
"I don't appreciate being humiliated," his voice was stone cold and dry.
The god held up his hand and she watched at it burst into flames. He gave her one last cold look before grabbing her neck. Corrine tried to scream, but she couldn't breathe. She could feel her neck being both burned and crushed.
Theodor held still while Hel tried to summon more dead souls, but none of them could reach him. He was completely blind and didn't bother trying to see. Although when he felt a strong wind blowing the snow around, he couldn't help but pry his eyes open.
He didn't see anything, only whiteness. Though he did feel the snow being blown against him. The sound of wind was whistling painfully in his hears. While trying desperately to keep the ice spreading and freezing any dead, he tried to build the ice up around him.
The creatures now were crawling closer to Theodor before they were trapped in ice. Ice was building up around him, blocking the wind as it grew stronger. Soon Theodor had a wall between him and the other gods. He could hear the other god cuss.
Louder than him was what sounded like screaming, Corrine screaming. In a panic, he quickly lost his concentration, and his defense against the creatures. They slammed themselves against the ice, shattering it. One of them reached in and pulled the blind boy out. Theodor tried to freeze them, but Hel yanked his hair, crushing any hope for concentration.
"Pitiful," she muttered.
"Truly," the other god chimed.
Berstuk looked up from a pile he was looking through. "Kill him already!"
Corrine, hardly being able to fight the god burning her, watched Theodor and the others. The god kicked Theodor in the stomach while the goddess, Hel, laughed. They both beat Theodor while laughing slightly about his pain.
Out of the corner of her eye she could see something green curling up from the ground. She tried to scream to warn Theodor, but she couldn't speak. Corrine watched helplessly as a long vine grew longer and raised itself into the air.
"Kill him!" Berstuk screamed as the vine came down on Theodor, going straight through his neck. He sighed then looked to the other gods in disappointment. "We're awakening Kebechet now."
No body moved.
"Now!"
All the gods jumped into action. Leaving both Corrine, and Theodor's body alone. Corrine could hardly breath, and everything around her neck was either numb or burning with pain. Her vision was blurry, but she could see the vine in Theodor's neck twist itself around him and hoist him into the air.
Berstuk, ignoring the other gods as the worked to set things up, walked up to Theodor, a small glass bottle in hand. He pushed it under the hole in his neck, letting blood trickle into it. He held it there while speaking to the body as if it were still alive.
"You were a peculiar form. I've never met a form as close to their god as you. You're both cowards, who dive head first into a hell you can't even imagine." He looked at the bottle and shook it for a second before taking it away. "And you both have those dead eyes."
Berstuk walked towards the coffin with Kebechet inside. He looked at her for a second then looked around and barked orders at the other gods, they all obeyed without a hesitation. The god that had burned Corrine walked back over to her and looked to Berstuk.
"What about her?" he asked sheepishly.
Berstuk's knuckles whitened when he clenched his fist. He turned to the god with a fake look of patience. "Svarog, are you telling me that you are yet to kill a child? I always thought you were better than that." Small plants sprouted at his feet.
Svarog tensed up, but kept his voice as strong as possible. "I meant..." he started. "What are we going to do with the body?"
Berstuk looked at Corrine with a furrowed brow. She did her best to look dead. She held her breath, stopped blinking, and didn't move. Berstuk shrugged. "Just leave it there."
Svarog nodded then went back to rummaging through the piles. Soon the gods had set up multiple artifacts around the room in an organized manner. Berstuk ordered them to start helping him awake Kebechet. Laverna brought him a page Corrine recognized from The Book of Thoth.
A smile pulled on Berstuks lips as he stared at the sheet. He quickly let it fade then looked down at the sleeping goddess. His eyes had a look of hope, and fear mixed into one. He looked around at the gods and the each set a hand on Kebechet.
He sprinkled Theodor's blood on the goddess and it seemed to sink into her skin. He looked down at the page and began chanting in what Corrine guesses was Egyptian. The other gods mimicked him, repeating everything he said.
Corrine managed a gasp when the artifacts around the room glowed. Each a different way, they each glowed with a different color, and in different intensities. She felt a strange tingling going through her, one that was almost painful.
As the gods chanted and the artifacts glowed, the bugs around Kebecher began dying and shriveling up. Although the bugs weren't the only thing. Svarog was seeming to decay. With each passing second Svarog's form grew more decayed while color returned to Kebechet's cheeks.
Svarog fell to the ground, no longer a god but a corpse. Kebechet barley looked like she has ever lived when the decay spread to Hel. Her decay was much slower, but Corrine knew she was running out of time.
Turan's voice was barely audible. Without Turan she was alone, but she knew what the goddess would be screaming at her to do. Stop Kebechet from rising, no matter the cost. Despite knowing the risks Corrine has already made up her mind. She wouldn't kill again.
No matter what happened, no blood would be spilt by her. She would wash her hands clean of blood, and never add to them again. The images of Anubis, and Ah Tabai haunted her mind, she couldn't bring herself to do it again.
With these thoughts running through her mind she rolled over and crawled to the gods. They were distracted by Kebechet, not one looked at her. She crawled to Berstuk, heaving for air and hoping with all her heart. Hel crashed to the ground, a decayed body. Corrine slowly pushed herself to her feet, looked over Berstuk's shoulders at Kebechet. She looked like she had once walked this earth, and was getting better as Laverna grew worse.
Corrine closed her eyes and let the images of Caleb, Theodor, and Brooke run through her mind. Three people that shouldn't have died. Three people she could have saved. Three people that shouldn't have been her in the first place, just like Oliver Heedy.
Her hands glowed with a bright green, disappearing among the other glowing artifacts. She gabbed Berstuk by the arms and dragged him back. He and other gods stopped chanting and Kebechet seemed to decay. The light grew brighter until they were all blinded. Corrine felt herself grow numb, and hit the floor.
