Chapter Six
"Mexico?" Brooke almost shouted.
"Yep," Orcus muttered.
"Are you telling me that you had me fly to Canada only to have me drive across North America to Mexico?" Corrine's knuckles turned white as she squeezed the steering wheel in frustration.
"Turan was the one who decided that, and we are not in a position to disagree with a goddess," Eligos said flatly.
"Don't we need our passports to even go through America?" Brooke asked
"I believe they are in your bags."
The three forms all began digging through their bags, and sure enough they found their passports.
"Why are we going to Mexico of all places?" Corrine asked through gritted teeth.
"Hodr, Nanhursag, and Turan have another ally there. Chaac Mayan god of storm and rain."
"Chaac? I remember him?" Gaki yelled. "I worked for him in the... 1900s?" She shook away the thought and jumped up and down in her seat. "He complained about everything. Humans, Familiars, animals, and other gods when he had a really bad day."
"Hold on," Corrine turned to face Gaki. "You've worked for another god before?"
"Yeah!"
"This isn't our first rodeo, kid" Orcus muttered.
Corrine rolled her eyes, then focused her attention back on the road. As they drove down the boring road Gaki told stories about her short time with Chaac. She went from talking about the battles he's fought to what his favorite fruit was in the same sentence. They drove for over a hour, Gaki hardly even stopping to breath, before they reached Regway, a city on the border between the U.S and Canada. They stopped to let Eligos, Orcus, and Gaki out and said they would meet up again once the others got past the border.
Corrine pulled up beside the border check and silently handed the man working there the passports. He looked at each passport and at each of the forms. With each form he looked at he looked more and more concerned.
"How long are you gonna be in the U.S?" he asked, looking at Corrine out of the corner of his eye.
"We're passing through to visit family in Mexico." She tried to put on a more mature, responsible vice.
"You two," he pointed at Corrine and Theodor, "have family in Mexico?"
Corrine opened her mouth to speak but she couldn't think of an excuse.
Theodor poked his head out so the man could see him. "We've got a cousin getting married down there and it's cheaper to drive."
"Huh..." He didn't look convinced. "Mind if I have a quick look through your car?"
"Not at all, Sir." Corrine bit her lip as the man walked around the car to the back and opened up the trunk.
Brooke twisted around in her seat and watched the look around the trunk the open the door opposite to her and look inside.
"How are you, little missy?" he asked in a bright yet concerned voice.
"Fine," she squeaked.
The man's face immediately scrunched up. "You excited for your trip?"
Brooke nodded and decided to try and help get out of there as soon as possible. "Ally could have picked a better boy, but if it gets me away from home I can't complain."
The man nodded and quickly glanced at the two in the front. "Are those your siblings or cousins or something?"
She looked to them and didn't make eye contact with the man. "Adopted siblings if that's what you're getting at."
He nodded again and turned to Corrine. "There's a lot of hair back here. What's that about?"
Corrine turned around and looked at the sheddings all over the seats. "It's our mom's car, she's more or less a crazy cat lady."
The man cocked his brow then closed the door and walked back around the car. He gave each form one last look then stamped each passport and Corrine drove away as soon as possible. She quickly spotted the three familiars on the side of the road and pulled over to let them in.
"What took you so long?" demanded Orcus.
Theodor rolled his eyes. "What do you think happens when three messy teens show up at the border saying they're going t Mexico. People tend to have questions."
"No kidding, but why didn't you just drive through?"
Brooke gave him a weary look. "Because that's illegal."
"So?"
Corrine threw a tissue that was in the cup holders at Orcus without taking her eyes off the road. "Orcus, shut up or I will throw you out the window."
Orcus shut his mouth and Eligos began telling Corrine where to go. The six trekked to Mexico in almost complete silence, the three forms wishing they could go back home. None of them were gone for long, but none knew how long they would be gone. Each pushed back tears as they thought of never reaching home.
I don't know why I just decided to start changing the author's notes at the end of chapters but here I am. Thanks for reading!
