Chapter Seventeen
The six stumbled around the city until they found a cheap restaurant with a bathroom. They sat outside and took turns trying to clean up in the bathroom. None of them dared speak of having to split up. Once they were all finished they sat in silence, not having the motivation to stand up. Their stalling was driving Orcus, and Buka mad.
"We have to leave. We don't have time for this. Berstuk knows where all the artifacts are better than us." Buka was hoping from foot to foot in pure frustration.
"Does it matter? Berstuk has actual gods on his side. We've only got washed up gods who thought dragging unexperienced kids into this was a good idea," Theodor said while rubbing his temples.
"Okay we get it," Orcus said. "You guys are young and don't want to be here. Now will you stop complaining?"
"And how old were you when you were a form?" Theodor asked.
"Twenty-three, but it was a long time ago. I'm over it."
"Well we're not!" he said.
Orcus gave him a dirty look then resigned. Theodor returned the look then brought his knees up to his chest and buried his head. A long silence went by with Buka still hopping with worry.
"Alright, you four. I know that none of you wanted to be here, and that you're all much too young, but we're in trouble here. If you four don't at least try to stop Berstuk he will destroy everything. I know you all dread having to split up, but we've no other choice. I'm sorry that you had to be here, and I know that things look bleak, but we have to stop him. There is no other way." Buka's voice was cracking and sounded like she was near tears.
The four stared at her in silence before Corrine sighed.
"Alright." She turned to the others. "We can't get out of this now. Even if we made back home we would still know that the world may end at any point and that there was something we could have done to stop it."
The others muttered in agreement and started planning their next move.
"So, who's going where?" Caleb asked.
"Well," Buka said. "The spear was hidden by Hodr. Theodor, do you think you can find it?"
He nodded slightly. "It's in Iceland."
"Good. Now there's just the one in Scottland, Athens, and- oh what was the last one?" she asked.
"Alexandra," Corrine said. "And I'll take that one if you don't mind. The one there will have to look for Kebechet and I'd rather have the highest chance of running into Berstuk."
"That's fine. Brooke, Caleb, do you two care whether you go to Scotland or Athens?"
They both shook their heads 'no.'
"Welp, then flip a coin. I want to leave," Orcus whining.
"No, no, no," Buka almost screeched. "Brooke you'll go to Scotland, and Caleb you'll go to Athens. Alright?"
They nodded 'yes.'
After another minute or so they stood up and walked to the nearest bus stop. They all dreaded getting on another bus, but it was the only way to get to the airport. Once the bus came they boarded as cautiously as possible, the other passengers gave them a few weird looks.
As they rode through St Petersburg other people started to appear on the streets. Some were going to work, some were walking around with friends, and others were walking around for the sake of walking. The four-glanced back at each other. Not an hour ago the streets were completely empty, there wasn't a sigh of anyone else, but now the streets were as busy as they could get.
When they turned back to look out the window, there was another bus. It looked like the one they were in now, but it was laying on its side. All the glass was smashed and there were dents covering every inch. Around the bus was caution tape, but it looked slightly translucent, like it was made of stained glass.
"Laverna?" Brooke muttered.
"What?" asked Caleb.
"Nothing," she said while shaking her head. "It's nothing. She was just the goddess I fought. She could make illusions."
"Huh," he sighed. "Think that's why no one was here earlier?"
She shrugged. "Probably."
The rest of the bus ride was silent. Each of them were too afraid to speak, even Orcus was dreading what would come next. Every bump the bus hit made them jump, the buzzing of a fly would make them flinch. Theodor's hands were frost covered from stress. Caleb, and Corrine were staring down everyone who even glanced their way, and Brooke was burring her face in her hands, ready for someone to come out and hit her.
Once they got to the airport they lumbered through and got to security. They didn't trigger any alarms, but the guards were giving them strange looks. After security one came up to them and said something in Russian.
"I'm sorry. What?" Corrine asked.
The guard motioned for another guard to come over. She waltzed with a furrowed brow. Her hair was a mess and she had bags under her eyes, but she seemed bright and alert. She and the other guard spoke for a minute in Russian before she turned to the four of them.
"How are you kids today?" Her accent was strong, but understandable.
Corrine glanced at the others then sighed. "We've been better."
"Well, where are you four headed?"
"Why do you care?" Brooke asked, playing the annoying kid card.
"You kids look a little... disheveled. That's all. We want to make sure you'll all okay," she said with a smile.
"We're fine," Caleb said as he took Brooke's hand and led her away from the two guards.
Corrine and Theodor went to follow, but the guards stopped them.
"Sorry, but where did you say you were going?"
"Iceland," Theodor said before showing the guard his boarding pass then walking away. Corrine followed him before they could ask any more questions.
The four grouped up and tried to figure out where they were going. While Theodor was glancing at the map Corrine, and Caleb were looking for Buka, and Orcus. They eventually found them hiding by a trash can.
Corrine giggled as she grabbed Orcus and stuffed him in her bag. "I knew you were a rat."
"Shut up."
They slowly made their way back to the others, still dreading the thought of splitting up. Theodor led them though the airport, only making a few wrong turns. They went to Theodor's gate first.
He was fast walking through the airport, hoping that the faster he went the sooner he could go home. The others would be able to keep up with him if he didn't wade through everybody. He would walk through a couple or push past a group of elders without a care, everyone else took a more polite approach.
They had a few minutes before the plane started boarding. Those minuets were spent slumping over a few chairs, and eavesdropping on others. Some complained about their delayed flight over the phone, another woman in the corner was trying to calm a screaming baby. They each wished to go back to something as mundane as that, but they were too far in.
They called for boarding and they all stood up. They each hugged Theodor and sent him on his way, all hoping to see him in Egypt.
Caleb was next. They wandered to his gate, still not okay with separating. His plane was already boarding by the time they got there, all of them went to the back of the line.
Caleb's blood was boiling, to the point where his fingers were a reddish color. His was fidgeting with his hands and kept letting people go in front of him. The others were patient and stood by him until there was no more stalling. The girls hugged him and he boarded the plane, tail between his legs.
Corrine took Brooke's hand and lead her to her gate. She could feel her hand trebling, but she didn't care, she was near tears herself. They had half an hour before the plane boarded so they took their time. They walked all around the airport, down every hallway, into every shop, and even every bathroom.
When the time came, Brooke was in tears, and Corrine was right behind her. They stood in line fearing for what would come next, either a painful death, or a "happy" ending. A couple of employees and other passengers asked if they were okay, but they couldn't respond. They didn't want to have to think of others. They feared for every one of them, but they couldn't look at them.
Brooke boarded in silence, leaving Corrine alone in a busy airport. She walked down to her gate, her head down. She practically fell onto a chair, her bag dropped to the floor. She sat in a state of not quite sleep but not awake. She stayed like this until they called for boarding. She grabbed her bag and stood in line, Orcus was rustling around in bag and tried to open the zipper.
"What?" she asked.
"One: keep the bag slightly open, will ya? Two: you'll be alright, so stop sulking," he said.
She giggled slightly, and the pika tried to smile (in a condescending way, but a smile none the less.) She boarded the plane and slumped into her seat.
"You really think I'll be okay?" she said, with head to the window.
"Am I one to lie?" He still had that smile on his face.
"Yes."
This one was a lot bigger than I expected. I don't know what happened. I feel like the style changed half way through this chapter so sorry about that.
Oh by the way I changed Wales to Scottland because I found a place I liked better there. I'm going to go back and change it for the last chapter, but in case you've already read it.
Thank you all for reading! It means a lot to me!
