Chapter Four
Theodor, Brooke, and Corrine froze as they saw the familiars land 50ft away. Corrine turned back and saw the woman rolling her wrists. When she saw Corrine looking at her, she brought up her hand again and flicked her wrists. Corrine expected to be shot back, but instead a large black dog walked out from behind the woman, she nearly shrieked when she noticed its three heads. The dog charged toward the group of forms. They each let out their own scream and ran in different directions. The dog's heads stretched out to take a bit out of all of them, when it couldn't get a tooth on them. It opted to eat the smaller of the three: Brook.
The dog ran after Brook, and when it got close enough it tried to take a bite, he missed but she managed to run further ahead. Theodor and Corrine watched in fear, unable to move when they noticed Brooke starting to slow while the dog stayed strong. The dog caught up to Brooke again, it took a bite and slashed a tooth through her shin. She fell to the ground and scrambled away from the dog, her blood watering the grass. The dog's heads snarled and growled, Brooke held back a scream when it raised its heads to finish her off.
Brooke stopped holding back her screams, but she made them angry instead of fearful. She threw her arm into the air, and the dirt under the dog hardened into rock then it followed Brook's hand and threw itself into the sky. The dog went flying, landing next the woman who gave Brooke an angry glare. She tightened her hand into a fist and the dog's skin started to sag. The fur fell off and soon, the dog was nothing more than a skeleton turning to dust.
No one moved except Brook who was rocking back and forth in pain. Corrine glanced at Theodor, he looked as pale as a corps, his hands were in fists yet trembling. She stole another look at Brooke who was trying not to cry from her open wound, then she looked at the woman just in time to see her wrists flick again and three more creatures come out from behind her.
The first one was a giant snake with green and brown scales, bright yellow eyes, and crinkled skin on its upper back. The second creature was a dragon-like monster, with a long neck, dark red eyes, pitch black scales, and a long tail that came to a sharp point. The last monster was a lion with two heads one to match its body and the other was that of a gout, the tail was not a lion's, but the head of a green snake with dark eyes.
"Oh, I get it," Turan said with a slight laugh. "That's Echidna, the mother of monsters."
"Okay, cool. But what are those things?" Corrine said, having trouble keeping the words in her head.
"The snake is Ladon, the dragon is a hydra, and the other creature is the chimera." The goddess spoke as if reading off a paper.
The creatures slowly walked out from behind the woman. Then ran at an unlikely speed toward the forms. Corrine dived out of Ladon's way and ran to Brooke, who was being stalked by the Chimera. Theodor stood completely still as the hydra ran towards him, when the creature came up to him, he looked up to face it. All color fading from his eyes, and the hydra stopped running. Theodor watched as it tried to back away from him, but it's head was trapped in a block of ice.
The hydra dug its feet into the ground, trying to free itself, but instead of breaking the ice, it ripped its head off its neck. The creature fell to the ground, it didn't move and blood leaked from its neck. As Theodor stared, the color returning to his eyes, the hydras head burst into flames. The fire raged on until the head was nothing more than a pile of ashes, then the fire disappeared as quickly as it started, leaving an empty ice globe in its wake. The neck, as if waiting for the head's fire to die, caught a flame too. The body of the hydra stood up and the the flaming neck flailed in the air as if in pain. The fire grew larger as if fuel was being thrown into it. The flames raged until two sets blood red eyes peeked through the flames. The two new hydra heads tore through the dying smoke to take a bite out of Theodor, but they were met with one pair of pure white eyes.
By the time Corrine reached Brooke, who was still crying over her wound, Ladon and the chimera were right on her tail. Corrine quickly took her jacket off and sloppily tied it around Brook's shin, hoping to stop the blood. Without her jacket, Corrine noticed the two giant gashes on the back of her tank top, but she didn't waste time wondering about it. She stood up to the face the creatures. The chimera and Ladon creeped away from each other, practically circling the girls. Both kept their eyes on the two and the anger in their glare.
Brooke raised her hand in front of her, ready to throw the ground again, but Corrine pushed her hand down. Then she walked away from Brooke and closer to the creatures. Almost out of instincts, Corrine starred the creatures down as two giant wings sprouted from her back. Corrine bit her tongue and muffled a cry, they felt like they were tearing through her skin. The wings had pure white ruffled feathers, the wing span was around 20ft. Corrine stood unfazed as the giant wings stretched out and flapped.
Ladon slithered closer and raised its head up off the ground. It brought its head up until Corrine was staring straight into its yellow eyes. Then the wrinkled skin on its back stretched out t the sides, showing themselves as large scaly wings. The wings looked like they would be on a dragon, they had points on the tips, and the scales looked like they could cut steel. Corrine and Brooke watched in confusion before the monsters lunged at them.
A rock caught Theodor's foot and he fell to the ground. He scrambled to his feet and look back at the hydra that was chasing him. As the monster came closer the ground around Theodor's feet became frozen and the ice raised to the hydra. The ice froze its feet to the ground, but that did not slow it down in the slightest. The hydra broke the ice without breaking stride and raced for Theodor. He squinted at the creature for a second then ran away as fast as his legs could carry him. He nearly fell again as he ran, but he didn't dare attack the creature again because every time he used Hodr's powers his sight faded away.
With everything he froze the world around him would become pale and blurry. At this point the ground was almost white with a hint of brown, the night sky looked like the day sky with holes punched through it. The hydra was a grey mess with pink dots at the top that grew bigger with each second. As he ran, he saw a mesh of color, it was tall and thin, but he couldn't make anything out of it.
A familiar voice that sounded strongly of his own broke out, "That must be Echidna," Hodr whispered. Theodor kept running in hopes to avoid both the woman and the dragon.
Thanks to Theodor's reserve in using Hodr's powers, his sight became clearer and he stopped to catch his breath. Then he turned towards the clearer creature. The hydra wasn't interested in letting Theodor have a break and it raced towards him but Theodor was ready to end it. The hydra skidded to a stop in front of Theodor, its heads growled and went to kill him. Theodor's vision faded, but he could hear the hydra struggle with icicles through its necks.
Theodor could see the bright light of the hydra's of heads and necks. As the fire, roared Theodor vaguely made out the hydras grey scaly body, and then everything went white. The light of the fire was the only thing he could see, but that faded. He heard three large thumps before he fell to the ground, unconscious.
Ladon bit Corrine's wings, but it was thrown off with a sharp flap and a shriek of pain. The snake slither away, hissed louder than any snake should ever hiss than it launched itself at Corrine. She flapped her gigantic wings, slapping it and sending the snake flying. Ladon fell to the ground, hard, but it quickly recovered. It sprung itself into the air and fell down to Corrine, she dived to the ground and Ladon barley missed hitting the ground head first. Corrine scurried away from the snake and pushed herself to her feet, only now noticing the blood on her wings that was mixed with a black poison.
As she stared at her snake bitten wing, Ladon charged at her, its jaw unhinged. It could have killed her if it was silent, but it hissed its war cry. Corrine took off into the sky and watched the snake struggle to reorient itself. She let out a cry when pain returned to her wing, and blood and poison dripped to the ground. The wing went numb and she started to fall to the ground. Ladon was about to fly up and attack her when she fell on top of it. The creature wrapped its tail around Corrine's neck and flung her away.
Brooke was keeping the chimera at bay, but it was only a matter of time before the monster would have a half-eaten child at its feet. She knew she couldn't run, and that she wasn't strong enough to hold it back forever. She held back tears as she threw stones at the creature. The beast was persistent, it hardly hesitated when a rock flew past its head. The chimera raced towards the young girl, slobber dripping from its teeth. It never slowed, and each head screeched louder and louder with each rock. Brooke panicked as the beast raced towards her. Out of panic, she dug her hands into soft blood soaked soil. The once moist soil became dry and hardened into stone. When the chimera came too close for comfort, she yanked her hands out of the new rock and put them above her head. The stone followed and formed a cold stone dome around her.
The darkness surrounded her and the sound of the monster scratching on the other side flooded her ears. The sound was distant, as if the chimera was scratching through a mountain. In the darkness, Brooke let her tears and her screams out. Her breath sped up, hot tears rolled down her face and cries of fear and anger overtook the sound of the chimera. She gripped her bleeding leg and shook her head, either the chimera would break through the rock, or she would bleed out. She was stuck playing the waiting game.
Brooke took her hands from her leg and pretended to look at them. She couldn't move them. It felt like they were something she was holding, she knew they were there but she couldn't move them herself. She rubbed her numb hands on her arms. They felt dirty. Dirt rubbed off on her arm and it felt like cold stone was pressing against her arm. The tears rolled down her face fast than they had before, the thought of losing her hands was something a child shouldn't have to think about.
"Pull yourself together, Brooke!" Ninhursag yelled.
"I can't," Brooke gasped between sobs, "I'm practically dead already!"
"Brooke, crying is going to solve zero of your problems," the goddess said. "You do not have the fight or flight choice here, you have fight or die."
"I can't even move my hands; how do you expect me to do this?"
"Now is not the time for sulking, Brooke, now is the time to bury the chimera a hundred feet underground!"
"This won't work," Brooke mumbled, as she prepared to attack the creature. Her mind was racing with thoughts of her death, she didn't have the head space to disagree.
The roars of the chimera were getting louder as it continued to scratch at the hollow boulder. Brooke gathered herself then shot her frozen hands out to the side, the rock broke into large pieces as they were flung out to all directions. The chimera dodged each and every rock without breaking a sweat, only losing a bit of ground. It turned back to Brooke, and hunched over, digging its claws into the ground. She tried to turn the soil around its claws into rock, but it was already running towards her, anger in its eyes. Not knowing what to do, she closed her eyes and let the tears race down her face.
The sound of the chimera running stopped, but it was replaced with the sound of crunching ice. Brooke peeked through her eyelids, the chimera scrambling on a giant sheet of ice a few yards away. Brooke looked around to find some sort of explanation, but instead she saw a giant dragon like skeleton with four sculls and four giant icicles through its chest. She looked around again in a bit of a panic, and her eyes fell on Theodor who was standing in front of the chimerea. He looked odd though, his bright hair was covering his eyes, he was slouched over and unbalanced, and his hands were twitching. Brooke squealed when he looked up at her, his pure white eyes made her feel like she was guilty of something, though she didn't know what.
The chimera, after stumbling over its feet, stood and faced Theodor. Its lion head roared fearlessly, while the snake hissed, and its gout head baaed as fearlessly as it could. T raced towards Theodor, who was starring of into space.
"Move!" she screamed, but he didn't move a muscle.
The chimera roared in joy of having such easy prey. It ran faster to get its meal. Brooke yelled at Theodor, telling him to run, to get as far away as possible, to do something, but he just stared at nothing. The chimera was getting ready to pounce on him now, a snarl on its lips.
Theodor whipped his head to face the creature, and it was yanked to a stop. The beast was being engulfed by ice. Its struggles were in vain, its limbs were already held in place by the white ice. Brooke sat still, staring in awe. Theodor went back to staring at nothing and icicles burst from the ground and plunged into the chimera.
Corrine stomach was twisting itself into knots, and the world spun around her. Ladon's poison was flowing through her and blood was dripping from her snake bites. Ladon, however, was thriving, hissing in victory every time Corrine nearly fell. The thought of running went through her mind, but she knew it would be hopeless. The creature was fast, and she was practically on her death bed. Ladon launched itself at Corrinne, and bit down onto her arm. She cried out in pain. The black poison and blood dripped out from behind the snake's teeth.
Brooke watched in horror as Corrine fought Ladon. Theodor still hadn't moved, he looked like he was frozen in place. Brooke looked down at her hands. They were till stiff and numb. She tried to rub the dirt off on her pants, but it stayed plastered to her skin. By now it felt like stone was being pressed to her arm, it was like she never had hands to begin with.
She shook away those thoughts and looked back to Ladon and Corrine. Ladon almost had a smile on its face. Poison dripped from its teeth and blood lust gleamed behind its eyes. It was going to kill Corrine and it had the tools to do it. She was a sitting duck.
Brooke glanced around. No help seemed to be coming. "Theodor?" she called.
He didn't respond.
Brooke held her breath, and shot her hands to her shoulders. The dirt under Ladon flew into the air, forming a dusty cloud around the snake. A loud hiss broke through the cloud, but she didn't care. She slammed her hands down in the ground, crossing them with each other. The dirt around Ladon gathered around it and hardened. The rock formed a new skin for the beast. It hissed loudly and whipped its head around, but it was stuck. Brooke let go of the breath she was holding onto.
"Good job," said Ninhursag, "Now mind getting rid of Echidna?"
Brooke turned around to glance through fuzzy fission at the woman standing in front of the white car she seemed annoyed but not angry. She twisted her hand and Ladon began to rot. Brooke, without thinking, flung her hand above her head and a giant rock burst out of the ground and shot through the woman's stomach. Brooke returned to look at her hands, she could no longer bend her arm, and the dirt from before had crept up her elbow. She looked back at her leg, the blood dipped down slowly.
Corrine stumbled over to Brooke, who was crying dryly now. Corrine's wings had disappeared as quickly as they had sprouted. She kneeled next to her and they sat in silence for a minute.
"Are you okay?" she said with a sore, raspy voice.
Brooke didn't respond, she only rocked back and forth. Corrine looked at Theodor, his head was ducked and his knees were buckled.
"Theodor?" She questioned. He stood there for a second, then his head shot up and he nearly fell backwards.
He looked around, his eyes wide and breathing fast.
"Are either of you okay?" Corrine asked, almost afraid to ask.
"I'm fine," Brooke chocked out.
Corrine turned her head to Theodor. He gave a nod and sat next to the others.
Corrine tightened her jacket around Brooke's shin, and swallowed her vomit. Brooke was out of tears and sat breathing heavily. Theodor on the other hand was more confused than ever. He tried talking to Hodr but he never responded, and he didn't dare ask the others. He was still trying to rap his head around what happened when Brooke asked "What about the familiars?"
Everyone froze. They had forgotten. Theodor shakenly got on his feet and looked around the plains. The familiars were nowhere to be seen.
Corrine stood to look for herself, but she didn't see them either. She turned to face Theodor. "I'm going to go look for them, you stay with Brooke."
He nodded his head and knelt beside Brooke. Corrine turned around and shakenly walked away.
