Chapter Eleven

Corrine ripped her sword out of its sheath and tuned to face who had grabbed her. Standing behind her was a man but not all of him was there. His skin was grey and missing in some places, his hair was almost completely gone, he wore formal wear but it was very dirty and torn up.

Corrine screamed and swung her sword at the man. He fell to the ground and she stepped as far away from him as possible. The man began to move slightly. It looked like he was trying to get up but there was something holding him down. He eventually gave up and started to crawl to Corrine. She took of her jacket and threw it to the ground then brought the sword in front of her.

"Any ideas as to what's going on?" she asked.

"No."

"Great," she muttered as she walked towards the crawling man.

Before she reached the man someone else grabbed her and held her in place. Corrine screamed again as she struggled against her attacker. In a fit of fear, she kicked them in the knees. They feel to the floor and Corrine ran. When she looked back another zombie looking man was laying on the floor except this one seemed much younger than the other.

Corrine bit her lip then let herself sprout wings. She held her breath and let the pain shoot threw her, the wings grew and the pain was worse than the last time. Her wings felt stiff and she could hardly move them but she couldn't stall. She held her sword up and waited for something else to come after her. She didn't move while the two zombies came to her.

"Any ideas on how to 'kill' these guys?"

"You will have to kill the god who summoned them."

Corrine sighed and tightened the grip on her sword, but before she could attack, someone kicked the back of her knees. She fell to the ground with a hard thud. Corrine rolled over just in time to stop a dagger from going into her throat. She kicked her attacker in the stomach and stumbled to her feet. Her new opponent wasn't like the others. He seemed alive to say the least. She quickly recognized him as one of the kids who fought with Berstuk.

Without thinking she twirled her sword in her hand so that she could stab with it easier. She walked towards the boy on the ground, he didn't move. There was something in the back of Corrine's mind telling her to stop, to put the swords down and run, but she didn't listen. She held her sword high above her head ready to end the boy but two decaying men grabbed on to her. One was clinging to her leg while the other was holding onto her arms.

The boy stood up and began to walk away as if he didn't have time for Corrine. She gave him a dirty look and made a point not to look away as she beat one of the zombies with her wings. He turned back in time to see Corrine cut off the other zombie's arms.

The boy rolled his eyes then straightened himself out. He started mumbling a few things under his breath and his pupils started to expand like an ink splatter on paper.

Turan let out a gasp but turned angry in a matter of seconds. "Why is he here? He's loyal to The Concord."

"Welp things change." Corrine looked around nervously. "Who is he?"

"The god Anubis."

"And what's he doing?"

"Summoning the dead."

"Yay..." she muttered.

Anubis' eyes turned back to normal and he brought his dagger up to challenge Corrine. She slowly brought her sword up to match. He started to step forward and Corrine held her sword so tight that her knuckles were turning white.

"Ask him why he's working with Berstuk," ordered Turan.

"Why?" Corrine was a bit to stressed to worry about small talk.

"Just do it."

She bit her lip and looked around. then spoke in a stern demanding voice, one she thought mimicked Turan quite well. "Why are you doing this?"

Instead of responding he looked the ground as if he was ashamed. Corrine raised her eyebrow and stared at Anubis but he didn't move. She didn't look away when she heard loud unsteady steps. She finally pried her eyes away from him so she could the mob of decaying bodies fumbling towards her.

Corrine's heart stopped as she stared at the crowd. There were at least thirty but they were in rough shape. Some looked grey with tight skin and sunken eyes while others had cracked skin and eyes that popped out, their skin seemed stretched yet thin, and blood vessels were popping out of their face.

Corrine stared in a state of fear and almost astonishment. She snapped back into focus when she noticed Anubis coming at her with his knife. She tried to deflect it but she could only keep it from hitting anything important. She cried out in pain when her shoulder was deeply cut.

She quickly kicked Anubis in the leg and tried to fly into the air but she was abruptly stopped and thrown to the ground. The mob was already upon her and they were trying to old her down. Corrine started kicking and screaming but there was no help coming for her.

Anubis began to push his way through the horde of his creations. Once he was there the horde had Corrine pinned to the ground. She wanted to scream to his face every profanity she could think of but at this point she could hardly breath. Anubis kept his face stoic as he raised his dagger high above his head.

Corrine's eyes started to water as she stared at this boy. She was helpless. She cried out once more but her voice wouldn't work. Anubis tightened his grip on his knife then brought it done fast.

There was a cry of pain but it wasn't Corrine's. Anubis looked around angrily to find his new attacker. Corrine let out a slight laugh when she realized who attacked the god of the dead. Anubis looked to where Corrine was staring.

A little pika stood at Anubis' feet, it stood low to the ground, with his back hunched, and its teeth bared. When Orcus realized, he'd been caught for biting Anubis, he ran through the crowd as fast as possible.

The hoard seemed to follow Anubis' confusion and let their grip loosen. Corrine immediately torn her limb from their grasp. She flew up without a second thought and this time nobody stopped her.

She glanced at the ground below. It was littered with corpses that were all staring at her, but she didn't care, she only cared about the brown dot that was scurrying away. When he was safe, Corrine landed on a nearby building.

She let her leg give out when they touched the roof, and she sat on her knees. Her mind was racing and she could hardly breath. She looked back to the ground and saw Anubis standing there staring at her. A couple of zombies were heading to the building to see if they could find a way up to the roof but most of them surrounded Anubis.

As she stared, at the god, tears began to swell in her eyes. She tore her head away then brought her knees to her chest and let her tears flow.

"Turan, I can't kill him," she wailed.

"Quiet. I don't want him to hear you." Corrine was starting to realize how stone cold Turan really was.

"I didn't sign up for this." She started to cry harder, to the point where she could hardly breath. "Why did you bring me into this?"

"I chose you because you fit my requirements." Her voice was stern and bitter.

"And what were those requirements?"

She stayed silent for only a second before sighing. "You're young, you're athletic, and... and..."

"And what? Easily manipulated?"

"No... You remind me of myself..."

Corrine didn't respond, she just cried more. She slowly reached for her sword and just studied the blade.

"I can't kill him. I can't kill him. I can't kill him," she muttered over and over again. She stood up and glanced back down at Anubis. He still stood there surrounded by his zombies. He glanced up back at her and gave a sly smirk.

Her heart stopped when a loud bang started. She turned around and saw that there were a few zombies coming on to the roof from a trap door she didn't see before. They all started stumbling towards her. She started to panic and flew up into the air again, she flouted away from the building until she was above the rest of the horde. She quickly glanced back down at Anubis and tears welled her eyes again.

"Corrine, you have to kill him! There is no other way out of this!" Turan shouted.

Corrine closed her eyes and thought about it. If she were to kill Anubis she would also kill the boy he was possessing but what life would that boy live. Each step would be controlled by Anubis and each breath would be wasted because his clock was already ticking. She tried to convince herself that it wouldn't matter if she killed him. He was already doomed to die in a few weeks, maybe days, anyway.

Tears began to flow down her cheeks once again and she opened her eyes. She looked down to Anubis and tightened the grip on her sword. She tried to harden herself, to not numb herself until it was over but the tears still came. She bit her lip, then dived down to Anubis with her sword in front of her. She shut her eyes tight as he tried to make his way through the crowd.

She felt something stop her from falling. She felt a pain in her cheek. Lastly, she felt herself hit the ground. Corrine opened her eyes slowly. The zombies had stopped moving they just stared at Anubis. He was laying on the ground with his knife a few feet away, now with fresh blood. She slowly reached to touch her cheek, it was bleeding profusely, but she was nothing compared to Anubis.

There was a hole ripped in his stomach and blood was pooling around him. Corrine crawled over to him and checked for a pulse. There was next to nothing. There was only the faintest beating but it was dying quickly.

She brought her hands to her face but stopped when she saw the blood on them. She let her tears fall on to them as she cried in the middle of the dead crowd. The zombies began to slowly decay to the point where they were just skeletons on the ground. Corrine just sat there as their dust blew away, tears flowing like a river down her face.

So as you may have noticed this chapter got a little intense (I think). The next few chapters are gonna be like that so fair warning things might get a little more violent. You guys might have already seen this but @Zevaldrina (Lady Koine Everstar I) and I made a combined account (@WatermelonGoddesses) and we'll be posting the first chapter to our first collaborated story there here soon if you want to check that out. Thanks for reading!
