It was the Romans who first built a temple to the goddess Luna atop Oldbourne Hill, although there is a tradition that the original people of the land, the Tirath, already worshipped a moon goddess called Lugra in the same place. Although there is no firm historical evidence to support this, the similarity of names is certainly intriguing.
The Royal House of Luna was founded in the year 616 of the Saxon Era by King Beornhard the Vigilant. He took the name of the goddess for his surname, in honour of the fact that he saved the kingdom from an invasion by Rollo Longstrider by mounting a surprise attack at night, and remaining hidden by travelling by moonlight. The worship of Luna has since become compulsory for the royal family, and it is not possible to rule Lindensea without being a fully initiated member of the Temple.
Of course the Temple of Luna has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current temple, a white marble edifice with a great domed roof and classical columns, was designed by the famous architect Sir Phoebus Starling and completed on the 31st March in the year 1247 of the Saxon Era. It remains a focal point of the city, and a drawcard for visitors.
According to legend, the city of Camden is under the divine protection of Luna, and it is said that the city shall never fall as long as her temple remains there.
