1st: Day of the New Year (sacred to Janus)
The god Janus opens the door to a new year, and everything this day is an omen for the twelve months ahead. It is customary to greet everyone met with cheery good wishes, and to exchange small gifts such as fruit, cheese, sweets, and money. The usual tasks are done in the morning, with everyone receiving the afternoon free as a half-holiday. The traditional meal this day is pea and ham soup, steak pie, and spiced date pudding with custard.
9th: Annual Ice Skating Race on the River Tayo (weather permitting)
An exciting ice skating race on the frozen river between the city of Camden and the town of Sudforth. Winner to receive a silver trophy and prize money of ten silver coins.
13th: Feast of the Royal Family (sacred to Minerva)
A feast at Camden Palace in honour of the Royal Family of Lindensea, with all members of the Temple of Minerva invited there. Many witty poems are recited during dinner, and a comic play is performed for the entertainment of all. This is the traditional last day of the winter holidays, with pupils returning to studies, school, or college the next week day.
24th: Feast of the First Furrows (sacred to Ceres)
A feast day for the country people, in honour of the ploughing season. Farm workers get up as early as possible, for it is a point of shame to be found sleeping in, and the last person to be out with his plough must pay a forfeit. Milk porridge and ale is given to the first furrows as a sacrifice, and prayers are made to Ceres and Mother Earth for a good crop that year, while priestesses perform blessings. Everyone dresses in colourful costumes, and there are processions, dances, and plays performed, with the cry of "May the goddess speed the plough."
31st: End of Waterfowl Hunting Season
In country areas this is celebrated with dinner parties of roast duck, and gifts to tenant farmers from the noble landowners.
