everything falls apart, rei brown
❝ THEY'VE FALLEN.
with the grace of eagles,
of ravens and crows and magpies
lone,
their wings like icarus: flailing, fleeting,
burnings of ambrosia,
nectar and honey—
it's leaving them too soon
ripping itself from their scent.
immortality: its taste sweet, its taste foreign
to man.
THEY'VE FALLEN.
their powers clash with their new bodies
wind whipping,
no longer the crackle of thunder or
the whizz of rain,
hail and cold lashes of poseidon's
anger, or zeus' rage.
apollo's sun now awakens on its own
accord, the howling of bears—
unprotected. the fair maiden
looked upon with
greed, the curious mind
shunned for its
intelligence. the screams of beauty,
of pain with no reassurance
immortality: its taste soon unknown, its
taste foreign to man.
THEY'VE FALLEN.
togas gone, wool and
cotton
clad their arms like armour. it is
not the same; hair greasy
or dry or fine—
not with that immortal smoothness,
not with that iridescent shine. the rainbows
no longer sparkle as
they did. wine red and white and mixed
fall glumly to
glasses.
wheat and fibre,
roses and embers,
mind and soul,
love and death.
immortality: its taste gone, its taste foreign to
man.
THEY'VE FALLEN.
they've finally fallen.
and the world hadn't even noticed. ❞
