Captain America: Winter Soldier; Part 2

After the incident at the Lemurian Star, Steve returned to SHIELD headquarters, Spiderwoman joined him, because she wants to know what really happened at the ship. Yes, she was also slightly angry at Fury.

The two went into his office and Steve started, "You just can't stop yourself from lying, can you?"

"Yeah, what he said," said Spiderwoman.

Fury says, "I didn't lie. Agent Romanoff had a different mission than either of yours."

"Which you didn't feel obliged to share," said Steve and Spiderwoman nodded in agreement.

"I'm not obliged to do anything," said Fury.

"Those hostages could've died, Nick," said Steve, Spiderwoman thought, "He's allowed to call him Nick?"

"I sent the greatest soldier in history and New York's Spiderwoman to make sure that didn't happen," countered Fury.

"Soldiers trust each other, that's what makes it an army. Not a bunch of guys running around and shooting guns," said Steve.

"Yeah, and the NYPD entrusted me with one of their police radios, so I can know everything on what's going on," added Spiderwoman.

"The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye. Look, I didn't want you doing anything you weren't comfortable with. Agent Romanoff is comfortable with everything," said Fury.

"I can't lead a mission when the people I'm leading have missions of their owns," said Steve.

"Especially ones that either of us don't know about," said Spiderwoman.

"It's called compartmentalization. Nobody spills the secrets because nobody knows them all," said Fury.

"Except you," accused Steve.

"You're wrong about me. I do share. I'm nice like that," said Fury.

The Fury walk into an elevator with the two following behind.

"Insight bay," voiced Fury.

"Captain Rogers and Spiderwoman does not have clearance for Project Insight," said a computerized voice.

"Director override, Fury, Nicholas J," voiced Fury, again.

"Confirmed," said the computer and the elevator starts moving.

It was quiet for a few minutes.

"You know, they used to play music," said Steve, breaking the silence.

"Yeah. My grandfather operated one of these things for forty years. My granddad worked in a nice building, he got good tips," said Fury.

"He'd walk home every night, roll of ones stuffed in his lunch bag. He'd say 'hi', people would say hi back. Time went on, neighborhood got rougher. He'd say 'Hi', they'd say, "Keep on steppin'. Granddad got to grippin' that lunch bag a little tighter," he said, telling the story of his grandfather.

"Did he ever get mugged?" asked Steve.

"Every week some punk would say, 'What's in the bag?'" answered Fury.

"What did he do?" asked Spiderwoman, as she was kind of interested in the story.

"He'd show 'em. Bunch of crumpled ones and loaded .22 Magnum," he answered, "Granddad loved people. But he didn't trust them very much."

The elevator goes lower and lower, Steve and Spiderwoman noticed three giant helicarriers.

"Yeah, I know. They're a little bit bigger than a .22," said Fury as he saw the two's expression. The carriers are huge, bigger than the ones than the last one. They were even armed with big guns. Spiderwoman saw that they were loading jets onto them.

"This is Project Insight. Three next generation Helicarriers synced to a network of targeting satellites," said Fury as he showed them around.

"Launched from the Lemurian Star," said Steve.

"Once we get them in the air they never need to come down. Continuous suborbital flight courtesy of our new repulsor engines," explained Fury.

"Let me guess, Stark?" asked Spiderwoman.

"Well, he had a few suggestions once he got an up-close look at our old turbines. These new long range precision guns can eliminate a thousand hostiles a minute. The satellites can read a terrorist's DNA before he steps outside his spider hole," Spiderwoman and Neith took a bit offense, "We gonna neutralize a lot of threats before they even happen," said Fury.

"I thought the punishment usually came after the crime," said Steve.

"We can't afford to wait that long," said Fury.

Steve asks, "Who's 'we'?"

Fury explains, "After New York, I convinced the World Security Council we needed a quantum surge in threat analysis. For once we're way ahead of the curve."

"By holding a gun at everyone on Earth and calling it protection," said Steve.

"You know, I read those SSR files. Greatest generation? You guys did some nasty stuff," said Fury.

"Yeah, we compromised. Sometimes in ways that made us not sleep so well. But we did it so the people could be free," explained Steve.

"This- this is not freedom," said Neith, for only Spiderwoman to hear, disappointment and bit anger was laced in her voice.

"This is fear," said Steve, unknowingly finishing Neith's sentence and Spiderwoman nodded.

"SHIELD takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be. It's getting damn near past time for you to get with that program, Cap," said Fury.

"Don't hold your breath," said Steve.

He and Spiderwoman turn and walk away.

Steve asks, "What do you say we take a field trip?"

"Sure, I don't think I have gone to any of the museums in DC anyways," answered Spiderwoman.

***

The two are now at a museum, they were in the exhibit that is dedicated to Captain America.

"A symbol to the nation. A hero to the world. The story of Captain America is one of honor, bravery and sacrifice," narrated a voice, while it was playing a video.

"Woah," said Gabriella, as she is out of her suit, listening intently to the narrator.

"You know we work together, right," said Steve.

"Shush, I'm learning history here!" whisper-yelled Gabriella.

"Denied enlistment due to poor health, Steven Rogers was chosen for a program unique in the annals of American warfare. One that would transform him into the world's first super soldier," narrated the voice.

She then looks around the museum and she saw a girl wearing a Spiderwoman backpack. She took a quick notice of any cameras; she pulled up her hoodie further to cover her face. Then she only summoned the mask of her suit and whispers, "Psst, hey kid."

The girl looks to the direction of the voice and saw her, her eyes widen and smiles. Spiderwoman winks and puts her finger against her mouth, indicating the girl to keep it a secret. The girl winks back and nods.

Making sure the girl turns back, she unsummons the mask. She then sees Steve walking away and she follows him to another part of the exhibit.

"That was rather bold of you," commented Neith, with amusement.

"What, I can't help myself," whispered Gabriella.

There were many displays of videos and mannequins dressed in army outfits, including the old Captain America suit.

"Battle tested, Captain America and his Howling Commandos quickly earned their stripes. Their mission, taking down HYDRA, the Nazi rogue science division," narrated the voice.

"The Howling Commandos, quite a name," comments Gabriella.

She then sees Steve moving closer to a specific display, and she moves closer to him as they listen to the narration, "Best friends since childhood, Bucky Barnes and Steven Rogers were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield. Barnes is the only Howling Commando to give his life in service of his country."

Gabriella looks at the man next to her sympathetically. Then he moves to another observation room where it played an interview with a woman, "That was a difficult winter. A blizzard had trapped half our battalion behind the German line. Steve..." She hesitates for a moment, then she continues, "Captain Rogers, he fought his way through a HYDRA blockade that had pinned our allies down for months. He saved over a thousand men, including the man who would later become my husband. Even after he died, Steve was still changing my life."

***

After the museum trip, Gabriella decided to explore a bit more of DC on her own. She then gets a call from her father.

She picks up, "Hey dad."

"Hey, so how's it going in DC right now?" he asked.

"Meh, it's ok, I've gone to a museum with Steve," answered Gabriella.

"Oh really, that sounds fun. Anyways, how much longer are you going to be there?" he asked.

"I think maybe a bit longer than expected, I just, I just have a bad feeling right now," she answered.

"The O'Hara tingle?" he teased.

"Please, don't call it tingle," groaned Gabriella, as she knows it is a stupid joke, "But, it's more like a gut feeling, I'll call you if anything happens."

"All right then, I'll talk to later," he said.

"Bye," and she hung up the phone.

She can't lie, she really has a bad feeling right now, even Neith says, "I would advise to be a bit more cautious today."

Meanwhile, back at SHIELD headquarters, Fury is in his office alone.

"Secure office," he orders, and the room darkens as the windows are blackened. He takes out the flash drive Natasha had downloaded all the files from the Lemurian Star and inserts it in his computer.

"Open Lemurian Star's satellite launch file," he commands.

"Access denied," responded the computer.

He orders, "Run decryption."

"Decryption failed," responds the computer.

"Director override, Fury, Nicholas J," said Fury.

"Override denied. All files sealed," responded the computer.

Fury asks, "On whose authority?"

"Fury, Nicholas J," answered the computer. He becomes confused and he is a bit worried. So he takes the elevator.

He orders, "World Security Council."

"Confirmed," complied the computer.

As the elevator is moving, a man is holding a virtual meeting with the World Security Council.

"If Nick Fury thinks he can get his costumed thugs and STRIKE commandos to mop-up his mess, he's sadly mistaken. This failure is unacceptable," said one of the council members.

"Well, considering this attack took place one mile from my country's sovereign waters, it's a bit more then that. I move for immediate hearing," said another.

"We don't need hearings, we need action. It's this Council's duty to oversee SHIELD," adds a third one.

A fourth one chimes in, "A breach like this raises serious questions."

"Like how the hell did a French pirate manage to hijack a covert SHIELD vessel in broad daylight?" asked the first one.

"For the record, councilman, he's Algerian. I can draw a map if it'll help," said the man who is holding the meeting.

"I appreciate your wit, Secretary Pierce. But this Council take things like international piracy fairly seriously," said the first councilman.

"Really? I don't. I don't care about one boat; I care about the fleet. If this Council is going to fall a rancor every time someone pushes us on the playing field, maybe we need someone to oversee us," said the man, now known as Secretary Pierce.

"Mr. Secretary, nobody is suggesting..." a councilman was about to say.

Then Pierce's assistant comes in, interrupting the meeting. He whispers something to Pierce, and he speaks to the council.

"Excuse me," says Pierce.

"More trouble, Mr. Secretary?" asked a councilman.

"It depends on your definition," answered Pierce.

The meeting ends and Pierce leaves.

He then meets with Fury.

"I work forty floors away and it takes a hijacking for you to visit?" asked Pierce.

"A nuclear war would do it too," said Fury, then he refers to the meeting, "Busy in there?"

"Nothing some earmarks can't fix," said Pierce.

"I'm, uh...here to ask a favor. I want you to call for a vote. Project insight has to be delayed," requested Fury.

"Nick, that's not a favor, that's a subcommittee hearing. A long one," said Pierce.

"It could be nothing, probably is nothing. I just need time to make sure it's nothing," defended Fury.

Pierce asks, "What if it's something?"

"Then we'll both be damn glad those Helicarriers aren't in the air," answered Fury.

Pierce hesitates for a moment, then reluctantly says, "Fine. But you gotta get Iron Man and Spiderwoman to stop by my niece's birthday party."

"Thank you, sir," said Fury gratefully.

"And not just a flyby or a swing by, he's got to mingle," added Pierce and he leaves.

Steve, who is joined by Gabriella, then decided to go to a group meeting, that is revealed to be some sort of support therapy group session.

"The thing is I think it's getting worse. A cop pulled me over last week, he thought I was drunk. I swerved to miss a plastic bag. I thought it was an IED," said a female veteran.

"Some stuff you leave there, other stuff you bring back. It's our job to figure out how to carry it. Is it gonna be in a big suitcase or in a little man-purse? It's up to you," said a black man, who seems to be the one who is hosting it.

After the meeting ends, Steve waits for the man as he finishes saying goodbye to the veterans.

"I'll see you next week," said the veteran.

The man says, "Yeah," and he walks over to Steve and Gabriella, and says, "Look who it is. The running man," then he sees the teen, "Who's she?"

"I was going to ask the same," said Gabriella.

"Sam this is Gabriella, Gabriella this is Sam," answered Steve as she shook hands with Sam.

Then Steve says, "Caught the last few minutes. It's pretty intense."

"Yeah, brother, we all got the same problems. Guilt, regret," said Sam.

"You lose someone?" asked Steve.

"My wingman, Riley. Flying a night mission. Standard PJ rescue op, nothing we hadn't done a thousand times before, till RPG knock Riley's dumb ass out of the sky. Nothing I could do. It's like I was up there just to watch," answered Sam, there was some solemn in his voice.

"I'm sorry," consoles Steve as Gabriella nods her head giving her condolences.

"After that, I had really hard time finding a reason for being over there, you know?" said Sam.

Steve asks, "But you're happy now, back in the world?"

"Hey, the number of people giving me orders is down to about zero. So, hell, yeah. You thinking about getting out?" asked Sam.

"No. I don't know. To be honest, I don't know what I would do with myself if I did," said Steve.

"Ultimate fighting?" said Sam, Steve laughs a little, "It's just a great idea off the top of my head. But seriously, you could do whatever you want to do. What makes you happy?" he asked.

"I don't know," answered Steve.

Back with Fury, he is now on the road as he drives through the city.

He then makes a call, "Activating communications encryption protocol," said a computerized voice in his car.

"Open secure line zero-four-zero-five," he ordered.

"Confirmed," complied the voice.

"This is Hill," answered Maria.

"I need you here in D.C. Deep shadow conditions," ordered Fury.

"Give me four hours," said Maria.

"You have three," and he ends the call. He stops at a red light, he looks over to see that a police car is stopped next to him, the officers inside look at him, "You want to see my lease?" he asked sarcastically.

The policemen then sounded the police horn once before they drive off. He then starts driving, suddenly a second police car rams into his car, then the three more drive into his car, surrounding him.

Inside his car, Fury is injured as the computerized car tells him, " Fracture detected. Recommend anesthetic injection."

He pulls out an injection as SWAT truck pulls up and the team come out, armed, the voice reports, "D.C. Metro Police dispatch shows no units in this area," making Fury realize that these policemen and the SWAT team are mercenaries.

"Get me out of here!" he orders, then the 'police' and the 'SWAT team' fire at him.

"Propulsion systems offline," said the car.

"Then reboot, dammit!" he yelled as the armor integrity of the car is weakening. They stop firing and Fury sees that the 'SWAT team' is bringing out a battering ram.

"Warning! Window integrity compromised," warns the car.

"You think? How long to propulsion?" asked Fury.

"Calculating," then the 'SWAT' start using the ram, "Window Integrity thirty-one percent. Deploying countermeasures."

"Hold that order," yelled Fury and the batterring ram is smashed against the car window again.

"Window Integrity nineteen percent. Offensive measures advised," said the car.

"Wait!" he yelled, and the battering ram is smashed against the window again.

"Window Integrity one percent," said the car.

Then Fury says, "Now!" and suddenly a minigun pulls up from inside the car and Fury uses it to return fire on the mercenaries causing the SWAT truck and some of the police cars to explode.

The car reports, "Propulsion systems now online."

"Full acceleration, now!" ordered Fury and the car backs up a bit and speeds away from the false police.

He then orders, "Initiate vertical takeoff!"

"Flight systems damaged," voiced the car.

"Then activate guidance cameras!" ordered Fury, and he goes over into the driver's seat, "Give me the wheel!" He takes over driving his car as the false police chase after him in their police cars, "Get me Agent Hill," he orders.

"Communications array damaged," reported the car.

"Well, what's not damaged?" asked Fury.

"Air conditioning is fully operational," answered the car. The police cars continue to chase after Fury as he weaves through the cars on the road, "Traffic ahead," reported the car.

"Give me an alternate route," ordered Fury.

"Traffic alert on Roosevelt Bridge. All vehicles stopped. 17th Avenue clear in three blocks, directly ahead," reports the car as Fury heads into the traffic he smashes into some cars causing a pile up which stops the police cars, the mercenaries get out and start shooting at Fury's car, Fury manages to kill two of the mercenaries by running them down before getting past the traffic, but the remaining mercenaries continue to chase after him and manage to sandwich Fury's vehicle between them, "Warning, approaching intersection." As they approach the intersection Fury stops his car, catapulting the two police cars, killing off the mercenaries.

He then orders, "GET ME. OFF. THE GRID."

"Calculating route to secure location," complied the car.

He then sees a mysterious figure emerges ahead in the middle of the road.

They suddenly shoot a bomb that attaches itself to Fury's vehicle causing it to explode and flip over.

Trapped inside his car, Fury watches as the figure walks over to the car but he manages to escape just in time by using a laser weapon to burn a hole out.

Steve is walking to his apartment with Gabriella following him, she didn't want to stay at a hotel, especially by herself right now. She still had this bad feeling.

They then hear his neighbor, "That's so sweet. That is so nice. Hey. I gotta go, though. Okay, bye," she was talking on the phone. She explains as she sees the two, "My aunt, she's kind of an insomniac."

"Hey, if you want...if you want, you're welcome to use my machine. Might be cheaper than the one in the basement," offered Steve.

"Oh, yeah? What's it cost?" asked the neighbor.

"A cup of coffee?" he suggested as Gabriella looks at him a bit teasingly and nudging him with her elbow.

"Thank you, but um...I already have a load in downstairs, and, uh...you really don't want my scrubs in your machine. I'm just finished orientation in the infectious diseases ward, so," said the neighbor, with a bit of a smile.

"Ah, well, I'll keep my distance," said Steve.

"Well hopefully not too far," Steve nods and turns to go into his apartment and she adds, "Oh, and I think you left your stereo on."

"Oh. Right, thank you," said Steve.

The neighbor replies, "Yeah," and Steve watches her go down the stairs before turning in suspicion to his door.

Steve hears music as he cautiously enters his apartment though the window, he grabs his shield for protection and Gabriella summons her suit. The two find Fury sitting on Steve's couch in the dark.

"I don't remember giving you a key," said Steve.

"You really think I'd need one? My wife kicked me out," said Fury.

"Didn't know you were married," said Steve.

"I almost feel bad for her," chimed Spiderwoman.

"A lot of things you don't about me," said Fury.

"I know, Nick. That's the problem," said Steve as he turns on the light. The two then notice Fury's injuries for the first time, but Fury indicates for him to be silent, he turns off the light and writes something on his phone and shows it to them; "ears everywhere."

Spiderwoman was growing unsettled, and worried as she looks at Steve.

"I'm sorry to have to do this, but I had no place else to crash," apologized Fury as he shows another text and shows it to them; "SHIELD compromised."

"Who else knows about your wife?" asked Steve, and Fury shows him another text; "You, me, and her"

"Just...my friends," answered Fury.

"Is that what we are?" asked Steve.

"That's up to you," said Fury. Spiderwoman's spider sense goes off, "Guys-"

Suddenly Fury is shot three times from through the wall and collapses, Steve looks out the window for the shooter then he quickly drags Fury to the next room, before he leaves Fury hands him the flash drive "Don't...trust anyone," and he passes out. Steve hears someone breaking into his apartment and hears his neighbor calling out to him.

She calls outs, "Captain Rogers? Spiderwoman? "Steve sees her walking in with her gun pointed, the two come out and she introduces herself, "Captain, I'm Agent 13 of SHIELD Special Service."

"Kate?" questioned Steve.

"I'm assigned to protect you," said the agent.

Steve demands, "On whose order?" as she notices Fury lying injured on the ground.

"His," she answers and goes to Fury then contacts SHIELD through her radio, "Foxtrot is down, he's unresponsive. I need EMTs."

"Do you have a twenty on the shooter?" asked a SHIELD agent on the other line, Steve and Spiderwoman notices the shooter though the window.

Steve says to her as he nods to Spiderwoman, "Tell him we're in pursuit." Steve smashes through his window and runs after the assassin, who is the same mysterious man that had exploded Fury's car, Steve chases him through an office building smashing through the walls. While Spiderwoman was chasing after him on the rooftops. when the two finally catch up with him on the roof he throws his shield at the assassin, but he catches it with one swift move.

Then throws it to Spiderwoman who dodges it and kicks the shield down to Steve, who catches it, both not seeing the assassin disappear.

The two run to the edge and she asks quietly, "Where did he go?"

***

Natasha goes to the hospital and meets up with Steve and Gabriella, who is still in her suit, they watch doctors operating on Fury. They converse to each other quietly, but Spiderwoman remains silent.

Natasha asks, "Is he gonna make it?"

"I don't know," answered Steve.

Natasha says, "Tell me about the shooter."

Steve tells her, "He's fast and strong. Had a metal arm. Just then Agent Hill l also joins them.

"Ballistics?" asked Natasha.

"Three slugs, no rifling. Completely untraceable," reported Maria.

Natasha deduced, "Soviet-made."

"Yeah," confirmed Maria.

"Great, so we're now facing evil Russians," muttered Gabriella.

Suddenly they watch in shock as Fury's state deteriorates.

"He's in V-tach," said a male nurse.

A female nurse says, "Crash cart coming in."

The doctor says, "Nurse, help me with the drape."

"BP is dropping," male nurse reports.

"Defibrillator!" yelled the doctor, as Steve, Natasha, Maria, and Gabriella watch in shock as Fury is flatlining, "I want you to charge him at one hundred," ordered the doctor.

Natasha quietly whispers, "Don't do this to me, Nick."

The doctor says, "Stand back! Three, two, one. Clear!" Fury is given a shock with the defibrillator, "Pulse?" asked the doctor.

"No pulse," reported a male nurse.

"No pulse," said another doctor.

The doctor says, "Okay. 200, please. Stand back! Three, two, one. Clear!" and he gives another shock to Fury, "Give me epinephrine! Pulse?"

"Negative," said a nurse.

Natasha begs quietly, "Don't do this to me, Nick. Don't do this to me." The three watch the doctors as they continue to revive him, but Fury is still flatlining, Steve turns away and Gabriella closes her eyes, trying to shut out the long beep noise, as they finally call his time of death.

The doctor asks, "What's the time?"

The female nurse answers, "1:03, Doctor."

The doctor finalizes, "Time of death, 1:03 a.m." Steve and Gabriella look down at the flash drive, that is in his hand, Fury had given him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(A/N: Hehe another chapter done! Also, to clarify Spiderwoman's age, so there won't be confusion, she is now 17. To clear up, she was 14 when she left for Egypt and her birthday was on one of the days she was there, so she turned 15. So, in those couple of years she went on as Spiderwoman, so she is now 17. After I do, maybe a few more, chapters, I will be doing some rewrites/updates to the earlier chapters. There won't be a schedule or a said due date.)
