Chapter 8

I awoke for the new day, and checked the clock. 7:40. I leapt out of bed, and quickly went down to shower. Once that was done, I threw on a nice outfit, and styled my hair in a bun. Once I was dressed to my preference, I went down to the kitchen, where I found Barry packing a picnic lunch.

"Good morning," He piped. He seemed to be extremely happy. I then saw that Barry was packing my favorites, which also was not considered a meal. I walked up to Barry and wrapped my arms around him, and he looked down at me with a smile. I gave him a small kiss on the cheek, and I heard a knock.

"We're here," Lizzie linked to me.

"Got it, be right there," I responded. I grabbed Barry's hand, and he staggered out of the room with me, barely grabbing the "lunch" he had packed. I opened the door with a smile on my face. There was a bigger crowd today, for some reason. Then I just stood there with a stupid look on my face.

"What do I do?" I asked Lizzie; this was going to be awkward.

"Um,Barry should introduce you..." I looked at Barry who was dumbstruck, staring at the crowd.

Suddenly he blurted, "This is Chloe, she has been here for about two weeks."

Many people in the crowd waved awkwardly, and I smiled weakly. People began walking towards a clearing where many blankets were spread out. Barry followed, and sat down at a blue and green plaid blanket. I stayed close behind, and cuddled up to him, a cold wind licking my face. He held me by my waist as he got the pile of sugar out of the basket. He had packed the remains of the cake, assorted candy, and some fruit. This also included junk food I had seen in the cupboards.

I shook my head and laughed. I then became more aware of the people around me. They were setting up their food, which was much more reasonable than mine, and some started to gather to approach me.

Before they started walking, Lizzie appeared at my side, "How's it going?"

Barry huffed at stared at her, "I would have come around soon enough. You didn't need to do that."

"Right."

I butted in, "What are you talking about?"

"I would!" He protested.

"What are you talking about?!" I nearly shouted.

Lizzie looked at me, "Well, my Gift goes a bit beyond what would be straightforward, like all Gifts. I sorta talked through Barry. I can also get people to move unwillingly, though not many know of the extra power of my abilities."

I sat in silence, invisibility was probably the extra part of my Gift. Then, I just had to ask Lizzie, "Could you make me do something?"

"What would you want me to do?"

I shrugged, "Just something subtle. I don't want any more attention."

Suddenly I felt a small jolt as my arm wrapped around Barry. I looked at Lizzie and she had a small smile, and the strange feeling subsided. I put my arm down, and leaned into Barry some more. I was about to speak, but I saw the group approaching, and didn't want to speak about it in front of them.

A girl with straight blonde hair stood at the front of the group. She had a face full of makeup that did not look good on her, a small nose, and striking blue eyes; she looked scary.

She was the first to speak, "Hi, my name is Sophie, nice to meet you. This is Calissa, Darwin, Andy, Zoe, Maddie, and Hannah." She pointed to the girls, and I waved a small greeting. This was going to be a bad day. I could tell that this group were those girls.

"Hi," Was all I could say before Sophie showed off her Gift. She leapt into the air and hovered there before coming back down. I wanted to show off mine as well, but it was like a secret that is just for me. Not for her to see.

Sophia smirked at where I sat and bent down to my level, "Nice lunch. Do you have any nice dresses?" I nodded bluntly, "You can just give me your dresses when you can't fit them anymore. I'm sure that will happen if you eat like that. And besides, Barry is mine." She pointed towards the brunch Barry packed once more. She walked away with her entourage. Barry calmly stroked my hair and my blood boiled.

"We all hate her, and she has no idea that other people even have Gifts. No one in her group has found them yet." Lizzie answered my unasked question.

I smiled, oh how marvelous, "How long have they been here?"

"A year," I gaped dumbfoundedly at Lizzie's words.

"Seriously?" Lizzie nodded. "Well, can I be the first to reveal that revelation?" I asked with a smirk on my face .

Barry chuckled, "We'll see."

Now that Sophie had blessed me with her presence, many people came up and welcomed me, stating their names and how long they had been here. The people passed by quickly and boringly, but one person caught my attention. Her strawberry blonde curls bounced around her shoulders in a playful manner, and her bright green eyes crinkled in a smile as she approached.

"Hi, my name is Nicole. I have been here as long as Barry, and well, yeah." She sat down on the blanket, which surprised me. I looked to Barry for answers.

"Nicole and I have been friends since we got here. We came within the same week, and I haven't really been able to see her since you came." Barry introduced in a whisper, "How are you doing Nicole?"

"Pretty good, not much has happened lately, I've just been practicing with my Gift."

I looked at her once more, "What is your Gift?"

She looked at the ground, "It really isn't anything. A lot of the first people to get here don't have great Gifts, mine is boring. It's just, like, talking to animals." I stared at her wide-eyed, and she stared back with a concerned look in her eyes after a few seconds, "What is it?"

"I'll show you when this is over." This was going to be perfect. We sat together for the rest of the picnic, which seemed to last only an hour. Apparently the people here hated this as much as I did.

Nicole walked beside me in curiosity, "When are we going to get there?"

I rose up some rock barriers for some privacy, "We're here."

"Well if you are trying to show me some spectacular animal, I have seen all of them here, and you'd be surprised at the types here. Some aren't even native to America."

"Well, I can get you whatever animal you want, just name it."

Nicole looked at me with her green eyes, to then turn towards Lizzie and Barry, who were just standing and smiling. She looked back towards me, "Panther?"

"I'll be right back," I smirked as I rose up a separate barrier to hide me. I shifted to a baby panther, and opened the rocks just wide enough for me to exit.

Her eyes widened and she stretched her arms out, "Oh my goodness!"

I walked up to her and laid down.

"You really are something," Lizzie linked. I tried not to smirk as I tried to act like an animal. I yawned, and stretched. Nicole knelt beside me and began stroking my back. I wanted to see if I could understand her, so I didn't try to translate words.

I purred and Nicole began to speak, "What's your name?"

I looked up at her, and tried to change my voice into something that sounded a bit younger, "Casey."

"My name is Nicole, where did you come from?"

"I have no idea. How do you understand me?" I put my head on my paws.

"Well, it is this thing called a Gift. Mine is talking to you." Nicole was being very sweet. I felt bad for doing this, but I enjoyed surprises, and giving them.

"I think I have a Gift too."

She smiled kindly, "I don't think you do, sweetie."

I shook my head, "But I do. I think that it has something to do with animals, like yours."

"No, you don't. I'm sorry."

I shifted her to a panther, "I do."

She didn't notice. She kept talking, and I tried not to laugh.

"I'm sorry, but you really don't. I'm sure that you have many impressive talents, but. . ."

Nicole reached to pet me once more, but noticed that it wasn't a hand anymore. She stared at me in shock.

I shifted back to myself, "My turn."

Her eyes widened, but she laid down, staring at me like I had grown an extra arm. I started petting her, and spoke so only she could understand me, "Do you like it?"

"Like what?" She thrummed.

"My Gift," I stated, "I was stunned when I heard yours."

"Yes," she started, "But yours is far superior."

"Sure. . ," I said skeptically.

She got up, "Would you like to run?"

I shifted to a panther to even the playing field, "Sure."

She set off at a sprint, but stumbled over her feet. I caught up to her, and continued running. Once she regained balance, she ran off after me, and I slowed down to match her pace.

I laughed as we ran around Barry and Lizzie, who seemed to almost have a look of jealousy about them.
