Chapter 19 ~ Barry

On my lap, I drew Chloe a set of cat accessories; a gym and a small bed. I don't have much to give, but I did what I could.

I gently moved Chloe into the bed, and I turned off the lights as I went to my room. I laid awake as I tried to figure her out. She was always so happy, but yet, she was angry as well. She loved to get into trouble, and haphazardly do things, but she was kind and worried for people if they did anything similar. I did not understand girls.

When it was near morning, I got up, and started making some cocoa. I never really needed coffee or tea, and this was a sweeter substitute for me. I walked into the living room to find that Chloe was enjoying the gym by dangling from a ladder. She leaped towards me, and soon was holding a cup of the sweet liquid in her hands.

I sat down beside Chloe, and wrapped my arm around her small frame. After discussing what we were going to do today, escaping, we began to head up to Kilton pond, or the pond with our human bodies.

I dove into the water, which was surprisingly warm. I opened my eyes, but they slightly stung, but it wasn't bad. I looked towards the cave, but the bodies were gone. Chloe came to the same realization.

I went upwards and Chloe followed the motion. She had a confused look on her face. I knew what she was going to ask.

"Maybe they aren't gone." I stated, and her expression didn't change.

"What do you mean?" She became deep in thought. This seemed too obvious, how did she not see it?

"Invisibility." I sighed, and she dove under the water. I followed slowly after, my wet clothes weighing me down. Chloe was nowhere to be seen, but in a moment, I was able to see both her and the bodies.

Chloe went to mine, and I was surprised to find that it was a lot heavier than it looked. It made me wonder how much my gnome could lift.

I blinked, and Chloe was now a large bear. She grabbed my old self by the shirt, and hauled it out of the water. I watched as she came back for her body, and I surfaced after her, and pulled myself out of the water.

Chloe was staring at herself, and then shifted before making contact with her body's face. Her gnome fell limp to the ground, and I ran towards her, and picked her up. She was no longer breathing, her heart stopped beating. I could do nothing as a tear slid down my face.

She was gone.

I held her up, and stared at her. There was no way she was dead. Gnomes couldn't die. But, I couldn't help but think it was so. I held her in my arms, her limp body sending shivers down my spine.

Out of nowhere, I heard movement, and I dropped Chloe as I realized that her body was coming to life. I took a few steps back and she began to cough up heaps of water. Then she looked at me once more, and her eyes widened.

She looked down at her hands, "What..." This must be Chloe! I was so close to losing her, I don't know what I would do without her.

"Well that's interesting," I stated, "I nearly lost you." I whispered, but Chloe wasn't paying attention. I figured that when the bodies I walked back to her gnome, and brushed her cheek, and looked up at Chloe.

"I feel that," She said in awe, and I walked up to her as she laid down. She was nearly four times my size, and I felt self-consciously small beside her. I rested my hand on her warm arm before walking over to my body, and I softly touched my cold skin.

There was a quick flash, and I bolted upright, coughing up painful amounts of water. When I was finished, I tried to speak, but my throat didn't want to work. I ran a hand through my hair, and saw Chloe as she touched her gnome once more, and her body went limp again.

Her gnome got up almost immediately, and walked over to me, and I picked her up. She was so small, so fragile.

Chloe put her hands on her hips, "Put me down. I'm not a toy." I held her for a moment longer before putting her down. I reached for my gnome laying beside me, and I was able to walk up to Chloe, back to my more normal size.

Then I remembered that we would need to hide them, "We need to hide these," Then I remembered that I did not want to cough up that water again, "But not back in the water."

She shifted into the large bear once more, and dragged her body, and I led the way to a hiding spot, trying to make a winding trail in order to hide our scent trails. When we reached a spot that satisfied me, I took note of its location and opened a large hole. Chloe placed her body in there, and then went back for mine.

I finally closed up the hole, and put a rock on it in case I forgot where exactly it was. Then, Chloe raced off in the direction of Lizzie's house. I sighed as I chased after her, and found her talking nonstop to Lizzie, who I could tell was getting bored, but her eyes widened when Chloe got to the actual point of the story.

Then I hear running up behind me, and Nicole stumbled into the conversation in her everyday attire of mud and sticks.

Chloe stops her rambling, "What happened to you?" Chloe would eventually get used to Nicole. I thought she might really like her.

"Fell out of a tree. A tree that happened to be above a mud puddle." I knew that Nicole was doing something else. My first thought was the surprise that Nicole usually gave her new friends.

Then Chloe switched her rambling to Nicole, who absorbed it like a child given candy. Her eyes grew with Chloe's words and additional excitement. This was bad.

I began to slowly step backwards, before Nicole exploded.

"OMYGOSHTHISISINCREDIBLYAMAZING!!" She shouted, "IDIDN'TTHINKTHATIWOULDESCAPEBUTNOWTHATMIGHTBEAPOSSIBILITY"

I darted out of the room as fast as I could, and waited for it to happen. But there was silence, and soon Chloe walked out. She had a small sloth in her arms, and she carefully set it on the tree before turning and staring at me with a concerned look. I looked towards her before standing up and shuffling over to her.

I relayed to Chloe that she had no idea what Nicole was like. She didn't know at all. She could cause lots of trouble when she got excited. She had caused chaos at one point by popping out of the bushes at random points in time, ranting about gibberish. That wasn't even the worst. We don't talk about that week. But I let Chloe win the argument, she was in a good mood, I didn't want to ruin it.

Off to my side, I saw Chloe do something, and I looked over to find a wolf staring me in the face. I took in a sharp breath of air, and tentatively ran my hand down her neck, knowing that she could kill me with a snap of her jaws.

She crouched down close to the ground and there was a moment when I had no idea what she wanted.

She began shaking her head slowly, and I didn't understand.

"She wants you to get on her back you goofball." Lizzie teased.

I put my hand on her back, and she nodded expectantly as I got onto her massive form.

She waited a moment for me to readjust before bolting, reaching speeds I didn't think possible. She raced forward, up and over logs, weaving between bushes.

But soon she slowed as she climbed a steep slope. There was a rocky outcropping that was covered in vines. She got up close and moved some of them to the side and there was beautiful hidden place.

Lush plants were scattered around a cascading waterfall that glistened in the light that seeped through the thick trees overhead.

I held tighter to Chloe as she unexpectedly glided down the slope leading to said waterfall.

Inside the clear water were strangely colored koi that swam lazily in circles. When Chloe approached, she stuck her muzzle in the water to drink the blue water.

She eventually lowered herself so I could get off safely, and I leaned into her soft coat, unable to let go. This was wonderful. I felt so peaceful, so relaxed.

"You are a magnificent animal." I mumbled. That came out wrong, but I didn't want to ruin the moment. I meant to say, 'You are a magnificent...' something. I didn't know what, that's probably why it came out wrong.

Chloe growled and barked lightly at me, sending vibrations through my body, and spreading a wider smile on my face.

I slid off my shoes with my free hand, and stuck my feet in the cold water. I splashed them around, watching the koi get close to observe me, but to then jerk away at any movement.

Chloe put a paw into the water, scaring away dozens of fish, that soon re-approached. I felt her relax, and fall into a light doze, her breathing getting slower.

I leaned against her, feeling her large heart beat underneath me.

I buried my face in her fur, and whispered one thing.

"Will you be mine?"
