Chapter 12

"Wha..." I didn't let him finish his sentence as I charged towards the strange person, and pushed him off the outcropping with a screech.

As we fell, I wrapped myself around him as I realized Barry, and shifted into something impossible. Well, this in itself was impossible, so anything could happen.

With Barry in my claws, I was cautious, and I beat my wings down hard, as we swiftly ascended. Once I was high enough, I dropped Barry.

I dived, and he landed on my back before he even knew what had happened. Barry panted as he struggled to hold on to my scaly back.

"What was that for?!" He shouted as I tried to hover in place so he could get comfortable.

I flew to a secluded area in the trees. No one lived over in this part of the yard. Should it even be considered a yard?

It couldn't be. It went on for as long as we wanted, and it just wasn't quite right. Passerby, if there were any, didn't see what was going on. The only thing they would see would be lifelike gnomes that are creepily shifting places when you weren't looking, but that would be it. That was when I discovered that there were even more gnomes that weren't in the front yard, but that the majority of them lived in the back.

I landed, and laid down so Barry could get off. I shifted out of my newfound dragon form to handle Barry.

"You can't just do that to get out of situations," Barry had his arms crossed and was looking at me sternly, he was adorable. "What did you do that for? Things were fine, then you just bolted out of the room."

I sighed, "I have no idea why, sorry." But just to tease him I shifted into a small wolf before walking up to him. Barry was not impressed.

"This is what I mean," Barry knelt down to my level, so I put my front paws on his knees, "You shift into something cute to please me. Well if you want to play it that way, you will just have to stay like this until you are ready to talk." Barry reached out to me, and I turned invisible, and was quick to run away. But Barry was also quick to catch on and I suspected he followed my tracks or sound. So I took to the air as a sparrow once more.

Now I was sure that Barry had followed my tracks, because he looked to the air once he saw that they were gone. I took a random path, making sure to lose Barry.

It wasn't a struggle, and once I was sure I was out of sight, I landed on a branch. I urged a hole to form in the tree I was on, and I dove down the hole into a new hidden base I created as I fell, hollowing out the tree before it hit me, and simultaneously closing the hole behind me.

I dug into the ground and past the roots, and then I started to pull rocks and wood up for the newly-made rooms.

I made it like my second home. I had my room, bathroom, and a rough sort of kitchen that lacked supplies. Although everything was sculpted from rocks and wood, it was still quite comfortable.

I decided that if I wanted more rooms, I would go farther underground to make more. I had shifted a while ago, and now I was going to relax in bed for as long as I needed, which was a bed of soft mosses and leaves, raised up on a wooden platform.

"Chloe? Where are you, Barry is seriously worried. He's searching everywhere for you." Lizzie called. I shuffled out of bed and started to create a hidden exit.

"I'm coming. His reaction is probably priceless," I heard Lizzie snicker across to me, and I took it that Barry was really worried. Lizzie told me where they were so I wouldn't get lost.

I had finished making an exit that was an extremely small hole under the root of the tree - I would need to shift into a small beetle in order to fit through it. I was still invisible, but I didn't want Lizzie to know about that ability quite yet. But, it would be fun to mess with Barry a little bit. I shifted back into myself as I quietly ran through the trees.

They were just outside the forest, and Barry was darting around the trees calling for me. I giggled. Lizzie was standing on the sidelines, watching the spectacle.

I walked up behind Barry as quietly as possible, and whispered in his ear, "Miss me?"

Barry jumped, and so I darted behind a tree, and became visible once more. I walked out from behind the tree casually, and up to Lizzie, who was staring at Barry.

"Hi, how's a goin'?" I looked at Barry who was running in circles, and darting at nothing, "What's up with him?"

"He thought he heard something, so now he's, well, trying to chase it."

I nodded in mock understanding, and continued to watch Barry with a smile. Eventually he looked around, and saw me. He ran towards me at lightning speed, and grabbed me in a bear hug.

I patted Barry on the shoulder when he was holding me too tight. He released me slowly, and held my shoulders as he looked at me.

"Why?" He whispered.

"I don't know." I shook my head, this was weak. Why did I even try? I just wanted something, but I didn't know what it was.

Barry let go of me, and I shifted back into a small wolf. Barry knelt down, and this time I let him hold me.

We walked back in silence as Barry stroked my fur. I leaned up against him, and felt his heat radiate off him, warming me up. His heart gave a steady beat, and I snuggled closer to him as we walked back home.
