Prologue

"Please! Hold on a bit more! You can't rest right now," the midwife's voice was inaudible over the screams of agony coming from the lady who was currently writhing on the bare, cold floor.

Clenching the torn old rag in between her teeth, her weak hands covered with scars grabbing onto fistfuls of the thin blanket, she pushed with all that she had left in her. This was a strange feeling to her. Despite being the mother of four, this was the first time she had ever felt so much pain in her whole life.

She knew though, that this wasn't like any other labour. This was meant to kill her, that is, if she didn't die by the hands of her own kind that used to look up to her, welcome her warmly and serve her.

"Mother! Mother! The royal guards are here! They are killing people, especially women and those who get in their way! It is so horrible out there, mother! I am so scared. The screams... The cries for lost ones... All the blood stained on the sharp and shiny metal swords that could blind our eyes for a moment and then take our lives in that blink of an eye... I am so scared, mother. MOMMY!"

A young boy, wearing only a small cloth, wrapped around his bottom half, its ends tattered and uneven. A layer of mud, enveloped around that small torso of his, that also, contained countless number of scars and scratches. For such a young child, having to endure so much in life. That is the plight of us, commoners.

She might have lived among them for a while. But that doesn't mean, she has forgotten all the problems that she had faced, and the difficult life she had led before she had found her purpose and lived among them for a while.

The moment the baby made it out safely, she was relieved, both emotionally and physically. It was a miracle, after all. To actually manage to survive the ordeal was no laughing matter. At least, she could rest peacefully knowing that her daughter would grow to be stroung enough to be able to fight through the battles and stay alive in this vicous and unfair world.

A low purr sent her heart thumping and her breathing to increase. Placing the damp and sticky rag on the ground, she rubbed her sore throat with her left hand while the other wiped her sweaty forehead. As she slightly raised herself from the floor, she was forcefully thrown back onto the ground as the impact of her draining energy, was getting to her.

The midwife, noticing the lady's reaction, immediately rushed to her side after setting the wailing boy down and placed the baby, which was neatly tucked in a white and clean blanket in front of him.

"I'm so sorry, milady. Please forgive my rudeness. You shouldn't stress yourself too much. You have just given birth to a cute and adorable daughter. My, my, what a beauty she is. I might not know much about you. However, one thing is for sure, your daughter's mere presence alone, is enough to cheer up my boy, which, is a pretty rare sight don't you agree? Here's your daughter," the midwife said as she handed over the baby to the lady, who was smiling weakly.

"My daughter... She has the same unique feature that me and my previous ancestors had, the same color of eyes that differentiate us from the rest. She is definitely the one I am willing to lose my life for," the lady said weakly as she placed a light kiss on the sleeping baby's forhead.

"What are you talking about? You musn't speak such words. We will all protect you from them milady. Don't do something reckless. We are all here for you, milady," the midwife said, hurriedly.

"For how long? As long as I am alive, they would keep chasing after me and this will never end. The last thing I need is to put my daughter's life in jeopardy as well. He will always be able to track me down till I die," she shouted, exasperatedly.

"This is the only way. Please take good care of her, like she is one of your own. I am grateful for all that you have done for me at the risk of your life and pardon me for having to leave such a huge burden on you and your family," she begged the midwife as she slowly pushed herself up with the little strength she had left in her.

She staggered as her knees wobbled from the sudden force. No matter how much the midwife wanted to stop the lady from handing herself over, she knew that her efforts would be futile as the lady would never change her mind despite her persistence.

She handed the body of the decaying corpse of a baby that, died a few days ago, to her to use as a decoy and led her out, without a word.

The moment she was outside, the light from the sun blinded her for a few seconds. Just then, shouts of "There she is! I can see her!" could be heard from a distance. Feigning shock, she ran as fast as she could. With only strong willpower and little strength, she was definitely outmatched. Just as she reached the outskirts of the village, she was surrounded.

The soldiers were too scared to harm her that they maintained a distance from her. Their attention was fully focused on her, hence, they failed to identify that the baby in her hands was already dead. "Hand her over, your highness. And you would return unscathed." One of the soldiers managed to force out the words he wanted to say.

Not heeding his words, she focused all her energy on the thought of fire. "Take care, my princess," were her last words as flames came from within her, engulfing her whole. A chorus of "Your highness" resonated constantly around the village.

That was when her eyes opened wide, for the first time. This is how her life started, with the death of another.
