Chapter One: The Cakes of Doom
SEBASTIAN POV
Sometimes; it's better not to be good at everything. Sometimes, it's better to be bad at things than being good. Like vandalism, or TP-ing a rival's house.
And that was definitely the case for me, Sebastian Obrien. The guy who has never had a girlfriend, and was constantly failing at school. The one thing I was insanely good at though? Sports.
Name any sport and I bet I can beat you at it. Rugby. Football. Baseball. Even boxing.
Here in the small town of Westside, we all pretty much knew each other since we were young, so there wasn't much news or gossip spreading around. That was until she came.
I sat in the hall, studying for my first-period calculus test. I was not prepared and sure I was gonna flunk it, but I'd rather sneak a couple of minutes in than none at all.
As class was to begin soon, people started to crowd the lockers, talking and doing some last-minute studying.
The incessant whispering of the crowds grew louder as I heard a distinct 'clomp' of shoes coming down the hallway. It was a long off-white hallway, with blue lockers and banners lining the walls. As the sound drew closer I saw her.
She was wearing beat-up sneakers and a red plaid shirt paired with ripped jeans. The mysterious girl had mid-length blonde hair that contrasted her outfit.
She was different. Unlike any other girl I knew. As she walked past me, her gaze locked onto mine for a quick second, then back to the long corridor.
I felt a rough elbow to my ribs to see it was Matt; my on-again-off-again best friend.
Matt has the tips of his hair neon green, which was originally brown. The green matches with the hazel color of his eyes. He was pretty good-looking but was never really into relationships, calling them 'Dark vortexes of impending doom which might seem sweet like strawberry cake first, but once you get closer and closer, it's just a brick with cheap pink frosting all over it.' How poetic.
He looked at me, wiggling his brows. "She's a fine 8." He said, obviously engrossed in what had just happened. I rolled my eyes and pushed him back.
"What about your 'Cakes of doom' speech, man?" I asked.
"Well, she looks like a cake I'd be willing to try." He responded, winking just before the bell rang.
Oh great, I was going to flunk this test.
"Good morning to all, we are now to have our test." The teacher grumbled. "If you cheat, you fail. If you talk, you fail. If you use your phones, you fail. We have a new student today if you could please stand up." He boomed.
The class was so silent you could hear a pin drop. Nobody stood up. We all turned to look at the empty seat behind me to see nobody there.
The class door suddenly burst open as a fragrance of berries overwhelmed my senses. The blonde from before ran into the class as she looked for a spot. Hesitantly, she sat in the spot behind me.
"You are five minutes late, young lady! It being your first day is not an excuse to come late into my class." He seethed, having a tantrum like a toddler.
"Good morning everybody." She remarked, with
a lightly clipped accent. "Please excuse my interruption."
"So as I was saying before I was interrupted," The teacher continued, "The test is today, so I hope you all studied because it's not gonna be easy. And you" He locked eyes with the new girl "I assume you won't be doing the test since you're new, but you will make up for it later on in the year."
"Actually" she contradicts, "I'm quite certain that I would like to do the test."
The whole class looked at her. Why do a test you didn't even learn about when you could just have a free period? She was a strange, strange girl.
The teacher smirked as he nodded his head. "Very well, but it will be on your record."
I was stunned. Now I really hoped she knew her stuff and wasn't trying to smart-off the teacher.
The test began as it drew silent in the class. I looked at the first question, not understanding what to do. I looked around to see the other kids answering the questions in detail while I was stuck on the first question. Well, this is what you get when you decide to go out than study.
I was able to answer about half of the questions before the bell rang, signaling the next period. The teacher went around collecting tests.
Once he finished collecting all the tests he shot us a murderous glare as he wickedly smiled and said, "You are now dismissed."
The whole class trampled out of the room trying not to be later than the teacher already made us.
I looked around to see as the girl was gone, nowhere to be seen. She was kind of like a ghost. Never to be seen, but there at the strangest of times.
I went to my next two classes, AP history and math disappointed not to see the ghost girl in any of them. I had a longing feeling for her radiant blonde hair and foreign accent.
I walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria with the other jocks.
"Sebastian?" I heard Tom call for me. I turned to my left, sending him a questioning look.
"Sorry, yeah?" I asked, slightly embarrassed at what had happened.
"I said, Have you seen that new girl?"
"Oh, oh yeah I saw her. She was in my calculus. First period." I pushed open the heavy doors as we entered the cafeteria.
