17 | The tank and her mage

Eria

"Hey mom. Do you think I should go to Endeavour's Hero Agency?" I asked my mom, who was getting ready for her work at her agency. Even though she had quit from being an active pro hero, she was currently the trainer and vice president of the agency.

"Endeavour? He sent you an offer letter?" my mother gasped as she tied up her dark purple hair into a bun. "That guy only choose the best of the best. From what I see in the sports festival, you weren't the best of the best."

"Mom! That's mean!"

"What? You lost control of your quirk and I only found out about your hidden demon quirk through TV. How long do you even plan to hide it from me? As far as I know, it's best for you to join my agency so that I can keep tabs on you for that whole week."

"But... Magnolia Agency is just......" I scratched my head. "I know it's a good agency but it's not the best."

My mother sighed. She sprayed some soap onto a cloth and cleaned her horns until they gleamed like gold. "Look, Eria. It's your choice. I'm just giving you advice. If you think Endeavour's is the best for you, just go ahead. But you need to prepare yourself for his harsh training. He's known to be very strict to new heroes in his agency. I worked with him. I know a lot."

I know what he did to his son too. He may be a great hero, but he is not a good father.

My mother caressed my head gently. "Just do what you think it's right. I'll support you."

"Thank you, mom."

My mother smiled beautifully.

"Here's your lunch, mom." My brother, Hinata handed her a lunch box he made on his own. Then he prepared himself for school.

Just do what I think it's right......

"Then it's settled. I'm going to Endeavour's agency."

***

"So... you're going to that man's agency?" Todoroki's face was an emotionless mask when I told him.

"You're... mad about it?" I tilted my head.

"No. I'm going there too."

I gaped. It was the least expected answer. "W-what?"

"He may not be a good father, but at least he is the Number Two Hero. If I can learn a thing or two from him, I won't need to be controlled by him any longer."

I nodded. Todoroki was thinking ahead now and putting aside his hatred.

"By the way, I don't understand why he chose you. You weren't best of the best."

The second criticism of the day pierced through me like an arrow.

"But I guess... if you manage to control your quirk, you would overpower everyone in class," Todoroki added further.

Sometimes, I know you don't mean it, but your words still hurt, Todoroki. I silently sobbed at my obvious weakness.

"B-by the way..." I tried to divert the subject. "Ochako, where are you going?"

Ochako was enjoying her lunch happily. "Gunhead's."

"Isn't he a battle type?" asked Tsuyu.

"I wanted to learn more battle skills so that I could use them during battles," replied Ochako. "What about you, Deku?"

"Actually... I got an offer from Gran Torino," said the boy sheepishly.

We looked at him, bewildered.

"A-apparently he's a very famous hero long time ago," he explained, a little flustered.

"I just hope our internships would go smoothly," I said. I caught of a glimpse of Iida, who hasn't spoke for the whole time. Even though he said he was fine, it felt like he was hiding something.

Iida, you better not think of doing something stupid.

***

On the first day of our internship, the class gathered at the nearest train station with our luggage and hero costumes. After waving goodbye to each other, we set off to our respective places.

Endeavour's Hero Agency was a tall skyscraper that was part of Tokyo's great skyline. it consisted of offices for the heroes, management offices, gyms, training areas and dormitories. Todoroki slightly scowled at the sight of the skyscraper but still entered the building willingly.

We were to meet Endeavour directly at his office on the top floor the moment we arrive. It was a huge gloomy room, void of any lights or bright decorations. To me, it looked completely different than my mother's agency, which was always decorated with lots of flowers to bring life to the place.

"I'm glad you accepted my offer, Shouto," said Endeavour. His large figure intimidated me a little. I wondered how my mother used to kick his ass as she claimed.

Todoroki scoffed. Endeavour's azure eyes turned to me. "Ah. You must be Dark Rose's daughter. Frankly I'm surprised you did not go to your mother's agency."

I weakly smiled. "W-why did you choose me?"

"Ah. That. Among all the students who competed in the tournament that day, you weren't the best."

Ah. I'm bleeding internally for the third time.

"But I see some potential in you. Unlike Shouto, who possessed immense power yet refused to master it properly-"

Todoroki glared.

"-you have no control over your quirk. Which means you might have a far greater potential if you could master it. You managed to destroy the stadium easily when you're not in control. Imagine when you do have control."

He... does have a point.

"Your mother, Dark Rose, once was my rival. She was powerful. But you are more powerful than her. If you could master your quirk, you would be able to complement Shouto's powers."

"What does that supposed to mean?" asked Todoroki reluctantly.

Endeavour scoffed. "That's your first assignment for the internship. Figure it out by tomorrow."

I blinked while Todoroki clicked his tongue.

"Now, put your things in your room and get ready. We're moving out," ordered Endeavour as he strode out of his office proudly.

I nudged Todoroki. "You understand what he just said?"

"No idea. We'll figure it out somehow," said Todoroki.

We changed into our hero uniforms. To my surprise, Todoroki has a new outfit on. It was dark blue long-sleeved suit that seemed to be more resilient than his previous one.

"If I want to use my fire, I have to equip a fire-resistant suit," Todoroki explained without me asking.

I nodded in agreement. "You look good, by the way."

"Hm. Your face looks red though."

I touched my cheeks. "Shut up."

My quirk complements Todoroki's quirk... Hmmm...

On the way to Hosu City, I was deep in thought with the assignment Endeavour gave us. We rode in a van, along with a few other pro heroes to patrol the city where a notorious hero killer has appeared. It was Stain, who has been known for successfully murdering heroes and had injured Iida's brother badly.

"Interns, follow me. We will patrol the streets until nightfall. The rest will gather information about Stain," commanded Endeavour.

Endeavour led the way, taking large strides proudly while grabbing a lot of attention from the public. Todoroki and I followed silently. A lot of people stopped what they were doing to bask in Endeavour's mighty presence but soon they returned to their daily lives. A few, especially young girls, were whispering and pointing at Todoroki, who was completely oblivious.

I glanced over at my friend. Like what Ashido had pointed out, Todoroki was indeed handsome, though it seemed he didn't care much.

"What?" Todoroki caught me staring.

"Nothing," I sheepishly replied.

I immediately delved into the assignment Endeavour gave us and kept Todoroki into the deep parts of my mind.

My quirk was Satan, a quirk that allowed me to turn into a demon with super strength. I could destroy things easily and adept in close combat. Todoroki's was Half-Hot-Half-Cold, which meant he could produce ice and fire at mid or long ranges. But from his previous match with Bakugou, Todoroki was not that adept in close combat. If anyone catches him in close combat, Todoroki's dead meat.

My quirk complements his...

"I get it."

Todoroki looked at me.

"I know what Endeavour means. I'm a tank while you're a mage!"

"W-what?" gasped Todoroki, confused.

"It's like an RPG game. You're the mage with great firepower, large AOE attacks but lacks in defense during close combat. While I'm a tank who has high defense to resist almost all elements and capable of protecting my allies during close combat."

Todoroki, though confused, slowly digested my words. "You have a point. Which means if we work with each other and coordinate our movements..."

"We can be invincible!" I laughed.

"Not exactly invincible," Endeavour abruptly pointed out. I cringed. "But good thinking back there. You are your mother's daughter." He stopped walking and turned around. "Within this week, I expect you to train and think of strategies to coordinate with each other. Heroes work best when they could complement each other."

I was motivated by Endeavour's words while Todoroki still contemplated on the 'tank and mage' thing. His eyebrows creased a little.

......cute.

Shit! What I'm thinking?!

I slapped my heated cheeks.

I need to push these useless thoughts away.

I need to.

***

On the second day of the internship, Endeavour asked me to force my hidden demon quirk from me.

Or he will force it out of me.

I really did not want to experience that.

Todoroki was to help me succeed with any means necessary, commanded Endeavour, though the boy scoffed.

We concluded that my hidden demon quirk could only manifest if I was desperate or in mortal danger. So, Todoroki suggested to freeze me with the coldest ice he could create to provoke my quirk.

"If it's extremely dangerous, just run, Todoroki," I warned. "Leave me and run."

"You sure?" he asked.

I nodded determinedly.

A cold chill spread in the air even before Todoroki used his quirk. Within moments, the walls and the floor were encased in a thick sheet of ice. The hairs on my arms stood as I started to shiver.

This ice will kill me if I don't use my quirk.

"If your quirk doesn't activate in two minutes, I'll defrost you." Immediately after he ended his sentence, the ice froze my entire body. The bitter coldness painfully seeped into my bones. My heartbeat slowed down to the point of stopping. I was unable to breathe. Through the ice, Todoroki's distorted figure stood before me, his arm outstretched to melt the ice.

Don't, Todoroki.

My mind was getting blurry. I couldn't think straight. Half of my mind wanted to stay in the ice while the other half wanted Todoroki to melt it immediately. The cold was painful, but the wait was excruciating. I lost count of how many seconds had passed. I just wanted it to end quickly.

Todoroki lifted his finger to show a minute has passed.

Let me break through this ice......

Let me...

Let...

I was losing consciousness. My sight was turning dark. It was horrifying, because it felt like I was......

......dying.

I don't want to die.

I want to live.

I......

As if my prayers were answered, a weird yet familiar power surged within me. It felt like my quirk was activated. At that split second, I hypnotised myself with the enchant that resonated in my mind for some time: I can do this. I can control you. I won't hurt Todoroki. I am the master of this quirk. It doesn't control me. It doesn't.

I closed my eyes for a second and the next time I opened it, I was sitting on the ground. The ice that encased me has shattered into bits and pieces around me. Todoroki stayed vigilant as he stood far from me.

I looked at my hands. They were my familiar demonic talons. I touched my hair; the left side was dark purple while the right side was pure white. I could feel something weird sprouting on the right side of my back like an extra limb. It was a weird feeling to move a wing that I never had before.

"Takasaki, do you have control over your quirk?" Todoroki asked and I looked at him. His eyebrows creased together and his lips pursed.

I was utterly confused at my current condition. Did I succeed or not? Activating only half of my quirk didn't seem like a feat.

Come out, you useless piece of shit! Don't take over my body and leave me behind to pick up your mess!

I forced the rest of my quirk to activate. Bone-piercing pain penetrated all parts of my body. I screamed but I managed to force everything out of me. The left side of my body manifested all its demonic characteristics, including my white hair and wing.

Before I lose consciousness, I punched myself in the face. The pain helped me to retain my consciousness.

Don't blackout again!

When the blackout threatened to rob my senses again, I punched my face again.

I won't let you! I can do this!

I managed to stay conscious with my quirk fully activated for another few minutes before my energy was depleted. My limp body fell to the ground, face flat.

"Oh god... I can't move again..." I muttered. The coldness from Todoroki's ice attacked me once more and I shivered. "Cold......"

Todoroki kneeled beside me. "Let me warm you up." He pulled me up into his warm embrace. My face reddened but I was unable to push him away. Instead I indulged myself in his warmth and quietly listened to his heartbeat. It was a calming melody. His toned muscles were hard but firm against my body.

I never want to leave his embrace.

"You feel better now?" He asked gently.

I reluctantly left Todoroki's embrace. "Let's... continue for a few more times."

***

The second day of the internship ended with me able to activate my quirk fully a few times without losing control. The longer I practiced, the longer I could control my quirk. The first time lasted for 1 minute before it disappeared, then 2 minutes, 3 minutes... until I lost all energy and fell onto the ground face first.

When Endeavour returned from patrol, Todoroki reported the results of our training. Endeavour was not pleased at my 'extremely slow' progress, to which Todoroki scoffed.

"I think you did great," said Todoroki as he carried my limp body on his back.

"No... Endeavour's right. I'm too slow. I need to keep practicing if I want to be a good hero..." Even talking sapped the rest of the energy out of me.

"Did you... got fat?" Todoroki abruptly asked.

"Bitch, call a girl fat again and you'll never use that mouth of yours again," I threatened.

I could feel a tiny smile spreading on his face.

The third day was another day of patrolling. We returned to Hosu City in order to catch the hero killer, Stain. To no avail, he did not appear on any heroes' radar for the whole day.

"Tomorrow we will be doing practical training again. The two of you will be facing me," Endeavour declared as he walked in front of us.

I jumped. That's fast?!

Todoroki silently glared at his father as usual. "Understood."

"I'm sure Dark Rose won't mind if I accidentally break a bone or two," mused the bulky adult.

I'm sure my mom will kill you if you do.

"Well then, let's-"

A large explosion blew up a building a few streets from us. Raging flames reached out in the dark sky like snakes. Behind us, people were screaming and frantically running away from something.

"Villains! And at this large scale." Endeavour clicked his tongue. "You two, follow me. It's my responsibility to make sure you don't die in this. We're heading to the building up front. The others, evacuate the citizens."

"Yes sir!"

Todoroki and I were about to chase after Endeavour until the phone in my pocket vibrated. It was not a suitable time to check for Facebook notifications but I just had a gut feeling that it was more than that. I fished out my phone. It was an abnormal message from Midoriya that showed only a location.

"It's not far from here," said Todoroki, looking at his phone. "Midoriya isn't the kind to send weird messages. Do you think he's in trouble?"

"I hope not. He does have a tendency to attract troubles," I said.

"Then let's go." Without hesitation, Todoroki called his father. "We need to leave. Our friend is in trouble."

"What? Shouto, don't you-" Endeavour was cut short by his son.

"Just send some pro heroes to this coordinate!" Todoroki shouted back as he led the way. It didn't felt right to leave Endeavour but it would be even worse if we left our friend alone.

Thankfully, it didn't take long to reach a dark quiet alley hidden from all the havoc in the streets. Before making a turn to Midoriya's location, Todoroki held me back. His mismatched eyes stared back at me with concern.

"I won't lose control," I said before he did. "If I do, freeze me."

His eyebrows creased.

"I won't die, dumbass. I'm your tank, remember? Tanks don't die so easily. I'll cover you."

A small smile crept onto his face. "And I'll have your back. As your...... magician."

"Mage," I corrected him.

"Mage."

After one last exchange of glances, we turned into the alley that would soon be one of the fiercest battles we would ever face as rookies.
