Chapter 13
Darkness. Pain. That's all I felt.
"Join me. We can be great. Your power and mine together. We'll be unstoppable." A cold voice kept whispering.
"No." I said over and over. I was in a deep sleep. I don't know where.
"Join me!" It hissed.
"No!" Pain shot through me again. I screamed in my head. The voice laughed menacingly.
"Join me or die!"
"No." I said weakly. I saw a green flashing light.
Third-person POV
"Malfoy, stay." Professor Snape said when the bell signaling the end of class rang.
"Yes Professor?" He said walking up to his desk.
"Take this to Ms. Dumbledore's room. You may test it but do not tell anyone else about it. The school provided it for her since she's on the quidditch team."
"A broomstick?" Draco said examining the wrapped broom.
"How'd you guess?" Snape said sarcastically. He look exhausted with bags under his eyes. Draco notice this.
"Are you alright Professor?"
"Yes Mr. Malfoy, I'm quite alright."
"You don't look it."
"Thanks for pointing that out. Me and other professors have been looking endlessly for Ms. Dumbledore."
"I heard Mother and Father talking. They're trying to help too. Father is scared it...it might be too late." Draco whispered the end.
"That's where your Father is wrong Mr. Malfoy. It is never too late."
"Unless she's...."
"Good day Mr. Malfoy." Snape beckoned him away.
It was now Halloween morning. The smell of pumpkin filled the castle.
"Heard anything on Shelby?" Ron asked Hermione that morning.
"No." She sighed heavily.
"I bet Malfoy has something to do with it." Harry snarled.
"Don't be silly. How could he do something like this? He's not smart enough." Hermione said.
"True. But I wouldn't put it past him." Harry said.
In the Slytherin common room Draco was talking to Crabbe and Goyle.
"Father says it must be someone in the school. Apparently she has some kind of power. I think she's locked up somewhere being experimented on. I wouldn't put it past Potter either. She was stealing his spotlight. Wanted to get rid of her so he'd be the center of attention again." Draco explained to them.
"Maybe she ran away." Crabbe suggested.
"No. They would've found her by now." Draco said waving off the theory.
Dinner that evening was full of wonderful pumpkin flavored food. All the students were happy and having a great time. Well, all but two. Harry and Draco were glaring at each other. The glaring contest might've turned into something more if it wasn't suddenly interrupted.
"Troll-in the dungeons-thought you ought to know." Professor Quirrel explained and fainted. The room was in panic.
"Prefects lead your Houses back to the dormitories immediately!" Dumbledore ordered.
In the long run, the troll was defeated by Ron and Harry after a close run in with Hermione.
"Quirrell, this is your last chance. Tell me where the girl is or suffer the consequences." Snape hissed.
"I-I don't know!"
"Me and you both know you do. Tell me."
"I-I assure y-you I d-don't know!"
"I will find her and put an end to you." He stormed out of Professor Quirrel's office and went to his.
The day of the first quidditch match came. Slytherin would be playing Gryffindor. Draco was in Shelby's dormitory. He sat on the edge of her bed holding her broom. It was a Nimbus 2000. It even had her name neatly carved on the handle. Draco sighed and twisted it in his hands. The door slowly opened and Professor Snape slowly walked in.
"It's about to start. You don't want to miss the first match do you?" Snape said.
"I'm coming. She was really excited about this. Thought she would finally fit in. She doesn't know I know that. I kind of read it in her diary." Draco admitted.
"She didn't think she fitted in?"
"No. The diary said that everyone else knew about wizarding stuff except for the muggle-borns. She said she was such an outcast her own Father didn't want her. But she said was going to stay positive. That she was starting a new life. That she had new friends that were like family. Her last entry was the night she stayed at my house. She said she liked to pretend it was her home and family and it comforted her." Draco told him.
"Go on to the game with your friends. We'll find her soon. Dumbledore is worried it's an attack on the school and another student might be taken soon. Don't go anywhere alone." Snape advised him.
"Yes Professor." Draco left the room and went to the quidditch field with Crabbe and Goyle.
"We can still beat Gryffindor with the pathetic Beater we have." Goyle said.
"Of course we can!" Draco exclaimed picking a seat in the stands. The match started and the crowd went wild.
"They keep missing Potter! If Dumbledore was here she'd already knocked him off his broom!" Crabbe yelled.
"Why did you keep talking about her? It's quite odd. We don't even like her remember?" Malfoy questioned him.
"Oh yeah we don't."
"Look at Potter! He's forgotten how to fly!" Draco pointed and laughed. The other Slytherin's joined in.
"I knew it! Snape-look!" Hermione told Ron. "He's doing something-jinxing the broom."
"What should we do?" Ron asked.
"Leave it to me." Hermione hurried to Snape.
Hermione set flames onto Snape's robes. It took Snape awhile to realize what was happening. But when he did he quickly stomped at the flames.
Harry caught the snitch with his mouth and won the game for Gryffindor at the dismay of the Slytherin's. When the match was over Hermione tried to convince Hagrid it was Snape but he wouldn't believe it. Why would a Hogwart's teacher try to kill a student? The conversation seemed pointless until Hagrid let slip about Nicholas Flamel. The trio now had a new lead of one mystery but there was still no lead on the mystery of Shelby Dumbledore.
The day before the Christmas holiday Hermione, Ron, and Harry went to the library, after having a run in with Malfoy and Snape that resulted in 5 points from Gryffindor. They hoped to find more information on Nicholas Flamel. Hermione rounded the corner with an arm full of books when she bumped into someone which sent them both flying.
"Watch where you're going Granger!" He spat.
"What are you doing here Malfoy?"
"Reading. That's usually what people do in the library." He said picking up his books.
"I didn't know you could read." Hermione said picking up her books.
"Of course I can you twit."
"Why are all your books about strange disappearances?" Harry questioned. He and Ron had come over to help Hermione.
"What's it to you?" Draco grabbed his last book.
"Trying to make sure Shelby isn't found." Harry said standing up to Draco.
"What are you talking about?" Draco asked confused.
"You made Shelby disappear because you didn't like that she had more power than you and was more popular."
"That's ridiculous! If anyone did it you did Potter! She was stealing your spotlight!" Draco defended himself.
"I'm on to you Malfoy." Harry snarled and walked off. Draco quickly went back to his dorm to finish packing.
The few students that were left the day of Christmas made there way to the Great Hall for the Christmas Feast.
"It's a shame she couldn't be here. Her first Christmas with real family and all." Professor McGonagall sighed to Professor Dumbledore.
"A shame indeed. But not to worry we will find her." Dumbledore said trying to assure himself.
"We've searched the whole castle. We've done all sorts of charms. She has to be somewhere else." Professor Snape piped in.
"She's here Severus. I know it." McGonagall said.
"Draco dear, would you like to come open your presents now?" Draco's mother, Narcissa, said walking into his room.
"In a minute." Draco was sitting on his bed with his nose in a book.
"Alright dear." She sighed. She went straight to her husband, Lucius.
"I'm worried about him." Narcissa said to Lucius.
"Why?"
"Usually on Christmas he's all excited and comes in at dawn to open his presents. It's almost noon and he's still in his room reading." She explained.
"Don't worry. He's probably just catching up on some schoolwork. I'll go talk to him."
"Do you think they're working him too hard?"
"No. More than likely not hard enough."
"Draco? You're Mother is worried about you." Lucius said entering Draco's room.
"Why?"
"Because you're in here reading when you should be opening presents and eating treats."
"I know. But this book is....really interesting." Draco lied. Lucius looked at the titled.
"Strange Disappearances of Hogwart's and How They Were Found. That seems very interesting." Lucius said and looked at all the books. He noticed they all involved disappearances.
"Draco, I didn't know you were fascinated with disappearances....wait a minute. Does this have anything to do with Shelby Dumbledore disappearing?" Lucius questioned.
"No! Why would I be worried about her?!" Draco spat but didn't look up from his book.
"I don't know. Why are you?"
"I'm not!"
"I'll let you continue reading then." Lucius went to leave. Before he could walk out the door Draco spoke.
"Father?"
"Yes?"
"There's this spell. It shows you the way to lost things...can you teach me how to do it?"
"First thing tomorrow morning. Now come on before your Mother starts calling healers." Lucius said. Draco smiled and followed his Father to the living room.
~~~
A/N I know this covers a long period of time but not much happens. We know Shelby has been gone a long time. But we don't know where she is or who has her. We also don't know if Draco is trying to find her or hide her better *wink* *wink*
