The Girl In Blue

"How are you feeling this morning Charlie?" The nurse asks her last patient of the day.

"Oh as well as I can be ma'am." He says with a small smile, watching as the brunette girl takes his blood pressure.

"You don't have to address me so formally. I've told you before." She says with a slight laugh, knowing no matter how many times she reminds the old man, he'll still try to flatter her.

"I know but it's how I was raised ma'am. Hard habit to break." His smile never fading from his wrinkled face, as she just lightly shakes her head at him.

"I do have some good news for you today Charlie. They were finally able to fit the prosthetics to the castings we gave them, and they've finally arrived." At her words the double amputee's eyes light up at the prospect of walking again.

"Well, the anticipation is killin' me! Let's try the bad boys on." His excitement makes her laugh.

This is why she got into nursing, to be able to help and heal those that aren't able to on their own. To see her patients get better, gain access to the things that will lead them back to a semi normal life, is what always brings a smile to the girl in blue.

At first she was against working with the armed forces, knowing the horror stories from her grandfather. But her grandfather was the reason for her becoming a nurse, in hopes to help someone so they don't suffer as he did.

Then she met Charlie, and he reminded her so much of her grandfather, and she was determined to do what she could to help him walk again.

"Alright Charlie, slowly now." She commands bracing his weight with her body, as he eagerly tries to jump to his new metal feet.

"Now they're going to take some getting used to, and until Dan in PT and myself can help you with these, we're gonna need you to stay in your chair."

"Well don't tease me then doll. When can I start dancin' again?" He looks to her, the light dancing behind his eyes.

"Well, dancin' might take a bit." She says with a laugh. "How about, we walk to Dan's office and see when we can schedule you?"

She didn't want him walking too far right now, but when he looks at her, so full of hope, she just can't say no. So wrapping one of his arms around her, and giving him a cane to support the other side, they begin to make their slow trek down the hall of the VA center.

"So my dear, any man lucky enough to call you his girl?" This is a normal question from Charlie, making her laugh at his antics.

"Not yet Charlie, you know I'm always gonna be your girl."

She says with a smile at the long running joke between the two, but in the back of her mind she can't help but think of the attractive man that works down the hall from her.

"You're absolutely right. You're way to special to be someone else's girl." He says with a chuckle, making her laugh as well.

"How they feeling? Not rubbing too bad?" She asks as they get closer to the office.

"Not too bad. It's been years since I've been able to do this.." He says quietly.

"I know it's hard at times, but there's a reason you're still here. Find something you like to do, talk to a new person who you never would've talked to before. You never know what they could be going through, and you could be that ray of light they need."

The dulcet tone floods the hall, coming from the room usually reserved for meetings and certain help groups between the Veterans. Sometimes the girl in blue found herself just sitting outside listening to his encouraging words. No, she never served the country, but healing those who had was almost as taxing.

Listening to his words, gave her things to talk about with her patients, gave her ideas on how she could encourage her patients, to help them heal. She's suddenly broken from her thoughts by the deep chuckle belonging to Charlie.

"Seems like someone's caught your fancy." He says as they rest for a bit on a bench outside the room.

"I just enjoy listening to the talks he gives Charlie. Gives me things to talk about with rascals like you." She says with a smirk making the old man laugh heartily and shake his head.

"I think it's safe to say you like more than his talks doll. Have you tried talking to him?"

"You know, sometimes you're too curious for your own good." She says and he laughs, waiting for her response.

"Oh that I've known for years. That doesn't answer my question." He raises a gray brow, a sly smile crossing his face.

"No Charlie. I haven't spoken to him, and anyways a man like him is bound to have a wife." She mutters the last bit quietly, before standing up quickly.

"I wouldn't be so sure doll."

The old man replies as he watches the young man look at the brunette nurse with recognition and something the old man hasn't seen in a long while.

"Alright Charlie," The girl continues, having pushed aside thoughts of the young man. "Let's see what Dan has to say about your new legs!"

As she helps the old man to his feet, she's surprised to make eye contact with the young man as he bids his listeners goodbye. Flashing him a quick smile before she turns back to her companion, who chuckles at the flush on her cheeks.

He wishes he knew her name. It could make things a little easier, but then again he's never had this much trouble going and talking to a girl.

But the girl in blue is different, she leaves Sam speechless and that's not something that happens to the man that talks for a living. Her beauty captivated him the moment he saw her walking to the medical wing of the building, but he's been unable to gain any knowledge on who she is.

She's a beautiful mystery that keeps pulling Sam in. He has noticed her sitting outside his talks, simply listening, nodding along to the encouraging things he says. He hates to admit it, but there's been times where he's debated hurting himself just so he can go talk to her.

During one of his most recent talks, he noticed the girl in blue sitting on the bench in the hall with Charlie, a double amputee that Sam has had some very deep conversations with and enjoys the old mans company.

Charlie was a fighter pilot like Sam, only it was during World War Two, and he was shot out of the sky and taken prisoner by the Germans. Gaining infections in both legs, which were cut up, and badly burned when his plane crashed, later needing both of them amputated below the knee to stop the spread of infection.

He was the first man that Sam was able to talk about Riley to, since Charlie went through something similar. Although his partner thought him dead when the Germans grabbed him. Their talks started out as a necessary counseling session to help Charlie battle some old memories, but after two meetings it turned out Sam needed these meeting as well.

Charlie is also a notorious matchmaker. Always trying to talk to Sam about the women in his life, and if there was ever someone special. Charlie is the grandfather Sam never knew, the old man loves giving him love advice that, "always worked in my days, dolls enjoy the chivalry of things". Sam would always laugh and tell him, he might just have to try the old fashioned approach with women.

As the girl in blue gets up from the bench, helping Charlie to his new feet, he notices the sly look in the old mans eye as his nurse turns to look behind her.

She catches his eye suddenly and he's instantly captivated. She smiles quickly as the pink blush creeps its way into her cheeks, and he chuckles knowing he made her blush. He looks over to see Charlie send him a wink, making Sam chuckle and shake his head at the old man.

Seeing the affect he had on this mysterious girl only makes him want to know her more, she seems different. And if Sam was being honest, he needed something new in his life.
