Chapter 8

Some time had passed since the five students had finished their detention. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Angelica walked together talking about their exams that were soon approaching.

"I've always heard Hogwarts' end of the year exams were frightful, but I found that rather enjoyable." Both Ron and Angelica raised their eyebrows at her Ron scoffing then saying.

"Speak for yourself. All right there, Harry?" He asked noticing Harry kept rubbing where his scar is.

"My scar. It keeps burning." Harry explains hissing out.

"It's happened before." Hermione pointed out.

"Not like this."

"Perhaps you should see the nurse." Ron suggested but Harry shuck his head.

"I think it's a warning. It means dangers coming. Uhh!" He rubs his scar again making Angelica place a comforting hand on his shoulder trying to make him feel better. Harry smiles at her then he notices Hagrid across the field, at his hut. "Oh. Of course!" Harry explains as he then begins running to the hut the other three running after him Hermione asking.

"What is it?" Harry keeps looking forward explaining himself.

"Don't you think it's a bit odd that what Hagrid wants more than anything is a dragon, and a stranger shows up and just happens to have one?" The group of students approach Hagrid, who is playing a sweet sounding song on a flute. "I mean, how many people wander around with dragon eggs in their pockets?" Angelica raised her hand.

"Well, I don't right now but if I had a dragon egg I know I would carry it around with me" Hermione smirked asking.

"Why would you carry it around?" Angelica shrugged.

"I dunno, icebreaker?" Hermione laughed but Harry got their attention back to the topic.

"Guys, why didn't I see it before? Hagrid, who gave you the dragon egg?" Hagrid stops playing the flute to look at the group.

"What did he look like?" Angelica adds.

"I don't know. I never saw his face. He kept his hood up." This made Angelica a bit nervous as this did not help her opinion of this dodgy sounding person.

"The stranger, though, you and he must have talked." Harry said.

"Well, he wanted to know what sort of creatures I looked after. I told him. I said, "After Fluffy, a dragon's gonna be no problem.""

"And did he seem interested in Fluffy?" Harry asked trying to get Hagrid to tell them anything useful.

"Well, of course he was interested in Fluffy! How often do you come across a three headed dog, even if you're in the trade? But I told him. I said, "The trick with any beast is to know how to calm him. Take Fluffy, for example, just play him a bit of music and he falls straight to sleep."" The four students gape at this knowing that the person he told would now know how to get past Fluffy and get closer to getting the Philosophers stone. "I shouldn't have told you that." Hagrid says upon realising their mistake the four students take off running as fast as they can Hagrid yelling. "Where you going?! Wait!" The four students ran to the castle until they arrived to McGonagall's classroom when they got to the teachers desk Harry yelled.

"We have to see Professor Dumbledore, immediately!"

"I'm afraid Professor Dumbledore is not here. He received an urgent owl from the Ministry of Magic and left immediately for London." McGonagall tells them making them panic Harry exclaiming at first but going quiet.

"He's gone?! Now? But this is important! It's about...the Philosopher's Stone." McGonagall looked up from her work shocked at them.

"How do you know-"

"Please, Miss, we know someone's going to steal it" Angelica tried to explain.

"I don't know how you four found out about the stone, but I can assure you it is perfectly well-protected. Now would you go back to your dormitories? Quietly." With that the four students slump their shoulders but leave. As the four exit the class they walk down the hallway Harry telling them his theory.

"That was no stranger Hagrid met in the village. It was Snape, which means he knows how to get past Fluffy."

"And with Dumbledore gone-" Hermione stopped herself short when Snape suddenly appeared behind them.

"Good afternoon. Now, what would three young Gryffindors and a young Hufflepuff such as yourselves be doing inside on a day like this?" He looked at them which if it had just been Angelica she would have laughed and given a smart remark about her and the sun not having a great relationship but she seemed to be more nervous then normal.

"Uh...we were just..." Hermione tried to think of something but Angelica saw she had nothing so she helped.

"They were just showing me how to play wizards chess but they forgot the board for it in their common room" Snape looked at them doubtingly.

"You want to be careful. People will think you're.." Snape looks to Harry who is glaring at him making Snape look a bit shocked. "...up to something." With that Snape leaves billowing his cape behind him.

" Thanks Angelica, I just couldn't think of anything" Angelica smiled.

"I'm not really okay with lying but even I gotta admit that was some good lying"

"Now what do we do?" Hermione asked the group.

"We go down the trapdoor. Tonight." Harry said. Late that night Angelica was sneaking out of her common room when she ran into someone. Looking up she saw Cedric.

"Where do you think your going Ella?" She gave him a weak smile.

"Ummm, nowhere in particular" He raised his eyebrow and sighed.

"Is where your going, going to get yourself in danger or killed?" Angelica rubbed her arm nervously.

"Maybe." Cedric looked around but sighed rubbing his face.

"Okay, as long as you don't die and stay safe, I guess I didn't see you" Angelica smiled widely at this and Cedric bent down slightly to hug her saying. "Please, be safe I don't wanna lose my little sis" This surprised Angelica.

"You really see me as a little sister?" She asked making him smile.

"Of course, since I helped you find the common room I felt a protective brotherly feeling towards you" Angelica smiled.

"I always wanted a big brother" She said hugging him one last time before leaving. She sneaked her way to the third floor and waited for the others. She started tapping her foot as she waited when she suddenly saw the door click open. "You guys took your sweet time" She heard a quiet chuckle before she entered the room shutting the door behind them.

"Wait a minute...he's...." Fluffy blows a puff of air, and the invisibility cape flutters off the three Gryffindors. "Sleeping."

"Snape's already been here. He's put a spell on the harp." Harry says pointing out the harp that was playing. The four of them approach the large sleeping dog as they get closer Angelica resisted the urge to gag at the smell of the creature.

"Uh. It's got horrible breath!" Ron whispers.

"We have to move its paw." Harry instructs.

"What?!" Ron exclaims clearly scared.

"Come on!" Harry orders. With that the four of them grab the paw, which is blocking the trapdoor. "Okay. Push!" They all strain but eventually move the foot and open the door and look down. "I'll go first. Don't follow until I give you a sign." Unknown to the four the harp stopped playing and Fluffy's eyes open. "If something bad happens, get yourselves out" Angelica frowned at this.

"Yeah Harry that's not happening if something happens I'm gonna make sure you get out as well" Harry was about to argue when she held her hand up to silence him." Hang on a second...Does it seem a bit...quiet?" She asked.

"The harp. It stopped playing." Hermione pointed out her face showing fear. Drool from one of the dogs head falls down onto Ron's shoulder.

"Ew! Yuck! Ugh." Ron exclaims when he shuts up they all look up to see Fluffy standing above them growling until it barks and thrashing going to dive at them.

"Jump! Go!" Harry orders allowing them all to jump through the trapdoor Angelica jumps in last.  They all land on some mushy black vines.

"Whoa. Lucky this plant-thing is here, really." Ron says relived until the plant begins to move towards them and grab them pinning them down and wrapping around them.

"Stop moving, all of you. This is Devil's Snare. You have to relax. If you don't, it will only kill you faster." Hermione says making Angelica take a deep breath to calm down despite being a literal vampire small spaces made her panic and the constricting feeling of the plant was not helping but she trusted her friend. As she relaxed she felt the plant pulling her down until she came loose and landed on the ground roughly. Hermione ran up to her helping her up. "Are you okay?" Angelica looked at her ring making sure it was not broken.

"Yeah I'm fine thanks 'Mione"

"Just relax!" Hermione yells up to the two boys.

"Hermione! Where are you?! Where's Angelica?!" Harry asks.

"Do what I say. Trust me." Hermione yells back Harry takes a deep breath and relaxes falling through the ground and lands on the floor Angelica helps him up but they all hear Ron not calming down.

"He's not relaxing, is he?" Hermione asks.

"Apparently not." Harry responds.

"Uh! I remember reading something in Herbology. Um Devil's Snare, Devil's Scare, it's deadly fun...but will sulk in the sun! That's it! Devil's Snare hates sunlight!" Hermione takes out her wand and before Angelia knew it she pointed upwards shouting. "Lumus Solem!" A beam of light shoots up making the plant let go of Ron but the light also hits the young vampire and despite her wearing her ring she lets out a his recoiling and looking down at the burn mark now on her arm before quickly forcing it to heal. "What is that?" Hermione asks as they walk into the next room which is filled with golden birds.

"They're not birds, they're keys. And I'll bet one of them fits that door." Harry said looking over to the door he then walks up to a broomstick that is suspend in the air.

"What's this all about?" Hermione asks.

"I don't know. Strange." Ron creeps over to the door and takes his wand out.

"Alohomora!" He shrugs. "Well, it was worth a try." This made Angelica laugh but Hermione was getting annoyed.

"Ugh! What're we going to do? There must be 1000 keys up there!" Angelica inspected the keyhole and looked at the door.

"Nah, it's a specific one a door this old will have an old key most likely used a lot" Angelica said then looking back to the others who looked at her confused. "What? Some kids like reading about princes and princesses I liked reading about doors and keys"

"There! I see it!" Harry yells pointing to a key that fitted Angelica's description. "The one with the broken wing!" He then looks at the broom.

"What's wrong, Harry?" Hermione asks.

"It's too simple." Harry says and Angelica silently agreed if this was made by professors at Hogwarts then surely there will be a catch.

"Oh, go on, Harry! If Snape can catch it on that old broomstick, you can! You're the youngest seeker in a century!" Ron exclaims convincing Harry to grab the broom. But as soon as he held it the keys suddenly fly straight at Harry. As the three students watch they see that he has managed to grab the right key and flew low to the ground yelling.

"Catch the key!" He throws the key to Hermione, who catches it and heads for the lock when she opens the door they all run in and shut the door on the keys. They entered a dark room, with broken pieces around the room.

"I don't like this. I don't like this at all." Hermione muttered out allowing Angelica to hold her hand comfortingly.

"Where are we? A graveyard." Harry asked.

"This is no graveyard." Ron sighs. "It's a chessboard." They all walk out onto the marble board where flames light up the board and the giant player pieces.

"There's the door." Harry pointed across the board to a door. They all walk across the board, towards the door when suddenly as they reach a line of pawns, the pawns bring up their swords making them jump back.

"Now what do we do?" Hermione asks.

"It's obvious, isn't it? We've got to play our way across the room. All right. Harry, you take the Bishop's square. Hermione, you'll be the Queen's side castle. Angelica you can go in place as the queen. As for me, I'll be a knight." They all take their pieces making Angelica nervous as she had never played wizards chess which clearly Hermione hadn't either as she asked.

"What happens now?" Ron, who is now on his horse chess piece answers.

"Well, white moves first, and then...we play." A white pawn moves on the other side towards the students side then Ron thinks carefully of his next move.

"Ron, you don't suppose this is going to be like...real wizard's chess, do you?" Hermione asks tentatively Ron doesn't answer instead he yells.

"You there! D-5!" A black pawn moves forward, diagonal to the white pawn. The white pawn raises its swords and smashes the black one making all four of the children jump. "Yes, Hermione, I think this is going to be exactly like wizard's chess!"

"Is now a good time to say I've never played this?" Angelica whimpered out. The game carries on piece by piece the chess board soon became a battleground littered with pieces of the chess pieces. By the end the white queen turns, and smashes a piece making the children wince before the queen turns back again. Both Harry and Ron study the game before Harry murmurs out.

"Wait a minute."

"You understand right, Harry. Once I make my move, the Queen will take me...then you'll be free to check the King." Harry shakes his head.

"No, Ron! No!" Both Hermione and Angelica don't understand whats going on so Hermione asks confused.

"What is it?"

"He's going to sacrifice himself!" Harry clarified making both girls's eyes widen.

"No, Ron, you can't!" Hermione yells as Ron closes his eyes. "There must be another way!"

"Yeah, come on man this is suicide!" Ron turns to the girls.

"Do you want to stop Snape or not? Harry, it's you that has to go on. I know it. Not me, not Hermione, not Angelica, you." Harry nods before looking back across the board. "Knight...to H-3." Ron's horse moves forward, slides and stops. "Check." The queen turns and advances on Ron's piece until it stops in front of him. It slowly raises it's sword and explodes Ron's piece.

"RON!" Harry yells and Hermione starts to walk towards him but Harry lifts his hand towards her yelling. "NO! Don't move! Don't forget, we're still playing." She looks reluctant but moves back. Harry walks diagonal in front of the king. "Checkmate." The kings sword falls onto the ground making the three other children breath out in relief before running to Ron. The kneel down next to him "Take care of Ron. Then, go to the owlery. Send a message to Dumbledore. Ron's right...I have to go on." Angelica looks at Ron before glaring and looking up to Harry.

"I'm coming with you" Harry shuck his head.

"No, you need to stay out here"

"Hey, someone needs to make sure you don't get yourself killed in there, and I'd personally like to teach whoever has done this to Ron a lesson" Angelica was trying to not let her emotions get the better of her but seeing her friend injured on the ground was making her blood boil. Hermione looked up to the two and before Harry could argue more she cut him off.

"You'll both be okay, Harry. You two are a great wizard and witch, you really are."

"Not as good as you." Harry countered making Angelica nod but Hermione smiled.

"Me? Books and cleverness? There are more important things. Friendship, and bravery. And Harry, Angelica, just be careful." They both nod before walking away. They reach a long staircase to an empty room with pillars around it. The Mirror of Erised is in the middle of the room, with a man standing before it Angelica gasped softly as they saw that it was Quirrell the DADA teacher. Harry yelps and grabs his scar making Angelica place a supportive hand on his shoulder.

"You?" Harry says through the pain making Quirrell turn around. "No. It can't be...Snape. He was the one" Quirrell smirks.

"Yes. He does seem the type, doesn't he? Next to me, who would suspect, "p-p-poor s-stuttering Professor Quirrell?"" Angelica glares at the man who Harry still couldn't believe was the villain.

"B-but, that day, during the Quidditch Match, Snape tried to kill me."

"No, dear boy. I tried to kill you! And trust me, if Snape's cloak hadn't caught fire and broken my eye contact, I would have succeeded. Even with Snape muttering his little counter-curse."

"Snape was trying to...save me?" Harry asked shocked.

"Yes, although I was surprised that young miss Lupin wasn't suspicious of me seeing as she was able to see me from all the way across the pitch" Angelica glared at him even more intense trying to calm herself down as she felt her eyes fill with more red. "I knew you were a danger right from the off. Especially after Halloween."

"Th-then you let the troll in."

"Very good Potter, yes. Snape, unfortunately, wasn't fooled." Angelica smirked at this. "While everyone else was running to the dungeon, he went to the 3rd floor to head me off. He, of course, never trusted me again. He rarely left me alone." Quirrell turns back to the mirror as Harry's scar began to hurt.

"Harry, are you okay?" Angelica asked trying to support him.

"But he doesn't understand. I'm never alone. Never. Now...what does this mirror do? I see what I desire. I see myself holding the stone. But how do I get it?" A raspy voice calls out from nowhere.

"Use the boy." Quirrell looks back to Harry yelling.

"Come here, Potter, now!" Angelica steps in front of him.

"Like hell, am I going to let you use him!" In an instant Quirrell pulls out his wand and fires.

"Crucio!" A pain filled Angelica, like a thousand hot knives stabbed into her making her scream landing on the floor. Harry held her close hugging her tightly as tears of pain fell down her face.

"No! Stop! Please I'll do whatever just stop it!" Quirrell stops the curse making her shakily stand up and with Harry's help she follows him to the mirror.

"Tell me. What do you see?" Through the still remaining pain Angelica see's a blurry figure who walks up behind her smiling it turned into her mother who smiled before Draco seemed to appear and hold her hand. Angelica looked at her mother worried how she would react but her mother just smiled kindly at her. Angelica tried not to cry as she looked out of the corner of her eye as Harry reached into his pocket and felt something. "What is it?! What do you see?!"

"I-I'm shaking hands with Dumbledore. I've won the house cup." Harry lied the raspy voice speaks again.

"He lies." Quirrell snaps at Harry making Angelica's hand tighten around Harry's.

"Tell the truth! What do you see?!" The raspy voice spoke to Quirrell.

"Let me speak to him, let me speak to them both."

"Master, you are not strong enough."

"I have strength enough for this." Quirrell unwraps his turban and on the opposite side of his face, another face was attached. The face stretches out and faces towards the two children via the mirror. "Harry Potter. We meet again."

"Voldemort." Harry mutters making Angelica's blood run cold Lupin had told her he was the one who had killed her mother. He looked to Angelica hissing.

"Ah and Angelica Lupin, we finally meet, I only met your mother once when you were a baby. I believe you remember that don't you?" Angelica glared at him wanting to punch him or kill him, which ever came first but Harry held her hand tightly. "You see what I have become? See what I must do to survive? Live off another. A mere parasite. Unicorn blood can sustain me, but it cannot give me a body of my own. But there is something that can. Something, that conveniently enough, lies in your pocket!" Harry holds onto Angelica's hand as they turn and run. "Stop them!" Quirrell snaps his fingers making fire erupt all around the room trapping the two. "Don't be a fool! Why suffer a horrific death when you can join me and live?!" The two shuck their head and both yelled.

"Never!"

"Haha. Bravery. Your parents had it too. Tell me, Harry, would you like to see your mother and father again? Your mother as well Angelica? Together, we can bring them back." In the mirror Harry's parents appear with Angelica's mother.  "All I ask for is something in return." Angelica sees Harry take the stone from him pocket. "That's it, Harry. There is no good and evil. There is only power, and those too weak to seek it. Together, we'll do extraordinary things. Just give me the stone!" Angelica sees the faces disappear and push the stone back into his pocket.

"Harry, you know he wouldn't honour anything he says he killed your parents and my mother!" Harry nods turning to Voldemort yelling.

"You liar!"

"Kill him!" Voldemort yells making Angelica go in front of him not caring what happened to her as long as Harry got out of there safely.

"Stupefy!" Quirrell yells aiming his wand at her hitting her, making her fly through the air before hitting the pillar and land roughly on the floor not moving.

"Ellie!" Harry yelled but before he could go to her Quirrell jumps and grabs Harry's throat they both fall on the stairs making the stone fall out of Harry's reach. He strains and places his hand on Quirrell's, trying to get him off instead smoke furls from under his hand.

"Ahh! Ahh!" Quirrell yells backing up his hand now crumbling into a mountain of black ash. "What is this magic?"

"Fool! Get the stone!" Voldemort orders making Quirrell walk forward but Harry runs up and puts both his hands on his face making him scream and back away, his face now horrendously burned, crumbles as he walks forward. Quirrell's body now a pile of ash on the floor Harry stands up and grabs the stone before he walks to Angelica. He see's she has a cut on her head with blood running down and a busted up lip. He sighs but he sees that she is still breathing. Harry suddenly hears something behind him, turning around he sees a dust cloud with Voldemort's face the cloud rushes forward going through Harry. Harry screams in pain and falls to the ground, unconscious. The stone in the his outstretched hand the cloud goes over to Angelica looking at her. "We shall meet again, Angelica Black" With that the cloud flies away.
