Ethan

As I was walking to school I saw a group of crows circling something; above me in the sky. Now, it was spring so this was unusual behavior for this time of year. This caused me to become intrigued, I had never heard of birds staying in one place- in April. I started to walk towards them, totally forgetting about school and my dream, until I saw what they were circling.

The closer I got the clearer it got what they were circling.. As I got closer towards the crows I heard growling, honestly it was not the weirdest thing that happened that day, probably a bobcat or something.

As I saw what the crows were circling I screamed, it was the same thing I saw in my nightmare. On the ground was a body with its eyes missing, red ooze coming out of its eyes, hair was matted in blood. Just like how I saw my mom in my dream. So I did the bravest thing I could think of and ran.

As I was running I bumped into someone. I looked up and saw a boy about my age- he had a few inches on me though. He was wearing a black jacket that appeared to be leather, a black beanie with gray lining and red headphones. He had what seemed to be silver eyes. They were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. His eyes contrasted with his hair and made him seem like some god or something.

"Um sorry I just.. uh never mind. I'm probably just going crazy." I said taken back on how cute this boy was and his very beautiful and stunning silver eyes. "You saw a body huh?" He asked.

"H-h-how did you know?" I stuttered. 'Nice going!' I scolded myself.

"Everyone important in this town has at least once. Hi, I'm Ethan." He said as he held out his hand, he had black fingerless gloves on. 'So much for scarce crime.'

"Aubrey," I shook his hand, "Uh I'm new. Do you know where the high school is?" I asked, wanting to get off the topic of names and dead bodies.

"Yeah but are you sure you want to go to school today?" He looked at me, calculating what my next answer would be.

"No, not really." I answered, shaking my head.

"Cool, I'm skipping anyways, you can hang around me today." I nodded, taking in a much needed deep breath. "Um.. Aubrey this is gonna sound weird but.. did you have a nightmare last night?" Ethan asked, looking at me calculatingly.

"Yeah. Why?" I was starting to get a little freaked out by this guy.

"Because, only those who can solve this problem have nightmares about dead bodies. They seem to be in similar conditions as the main focus of the nightmare." Ethan lied, I could tell he was lying, but wanted to know where he would go with this. What can I say, I'm a curious person. We continued to walk until I saw where we were going.

"Hey strange guy I met on the street, why are we going into the woods?" I asked, looking at him, questioningly.

"I'm not a murder, if that is what you're thinking. It's just where my hideout is."

I looked at him, "And that is exactly what a murderer would say."

He shook his head, waving forwards for me to follow him. We continued to walk into the woods. 'Well it can't get any crazier right?' I thought, I shouldn't have thought or said anything. This was just the beginning of a very strange day, and led to a very, very strange year.

As we were walking through the woods I asked, "So.. Ethan, why are we going into the woods again?" He took a deep breath before answering.

"We are going to my hideout. Only two people minus myself know where it is. Once we get there it will be three." He started climbing over a small rocky hill. 'Still being very discreet.' I thought as I followed over the hill. We walked to a pile of leaves.

"Ethan. I don't know if you know this or not but this is a pile of leaves." I snarked, looking at the pile of leaves in front of a tree. Ethan just laughed and shook his head. He lifted a string and pulled up a net; in doing so the leaves lifted with the net. Under the leaves was a door to an old bunker. He lifted the door up and headed in- I stood there in shock.

"Damn.."

Ethan stuck his head out of the entryway. "Dream girl, you coming?" I nodded quickly before following behind him.

In the bunker was a bed, a desk, and a whole wall of pictures- they were very gruesome. One had a man with half of his face missing. Another one was a picture of a woman with no head and her left arm missing.

"What is all of this?" I asked, facing the wall trying not to puke.

"It's all the deaths that have plagued this town." He answered, I nodded. I was starting to think that Ethan had a few screws loose. Ethan walked over to a paper that was on the desk.

"Aubrey, how did you know where to find the body?" Ethan asked, I looked at him shaking my head before shrugging.

"I just did."

Ethan nodded before asking, "Is there any chance your dad was ever in your life?"

'Very specific.' I thought before answering, "No. No pictures. No nothing. Just what my Mom told me." I answered gravely.

He nodded, "Let me guess, after you were born he up and left?"

I nodded, "How did you know?"

He looked at him, his face serious, "Well it's because you're what is called a Gifted. So are my friends. I am also a Gifted." Ethan explained.

"Wait, I'm not a 'Gifted'. I'm just a normal girl who is trying to survive in a new town." I argued, shaking my head.

"Aubrey. Trust me. We need you, the town needs you. My friends and I fight for this town. We have protected it through the good and the bad. And right now it's bad. There's a group of serial killers out and my friends and I haven't been able to catch them, but with you we might actually be able to. Aubrey please." He softly spoke, like he was trying to save me from something.

"I...I can't!" I yelled and got up, "You're crazy! I am not some superpowered freak! I just had a bad dream, it was a coincidence that I saw that body, not some prophetic dream!" I walked over to the entrance and pulled down the ladder. Ethan leaned over so he could see me.

"Aubrey, listen to me. Everything I'm about to say is the absolute truth. When you gain your other powers, and you will, you will have to learn to control them. Otherwise you will be a danger to yourself and others. Aubrey, I need you to trust me okay? Trust me when I say I am not the bad guy. I am trying to help you." Ethan sincerely and carefully explained. I continued to climb up the ladder.

'I'm so so sorry Aubrey.' Ethan thought as he sat in the chair in front of the desk pulling out his phone. "911, what's your emergency?"

Ethan took a deep breath, "I would like to report a dead body."

I was walking home. My conversation with Ethan replayed in my mind. 'More powers? I don't have any powers at all. A danger, could I really become a danger to my Mom?' I asked myself. I saw my house coming really close. I put on a happy face and walked in the door.

"Hey Mom. I'm home." I said as I went to walk up the stairs. When I got no reply I started to worry. My mom always replied.

"Mom?!" I asked as I walked to the kitchen. "Mom?!" I walked towards the kitchen sink. "Mom. Why didn't you say anything when I called out?" I asked, worried I did something to make her mad.

"Sorry honey. I just didn't hear you." Adica said.

"Mom, are you okay? You always hear me." I looked at her trying to figure out what's wrong.

"I know sweety, but hey how was school?" Adica asked. "Good. Strange kids though." I lied. I was surprised how easily I lied, especially to my Mom.

"Aubrey. Why did you just lie to me?" My mom asked exasperated, my eyes widened, if she knew I skipped school what else could she know.

"Mom I'm sorry but I just couldn't go today." I said starting to freak out.

"Aubrey. It's okay. Just don't lie to me again, and at least tell me next time if you're planning on skipping that way when I get a call from your school saying you never showed I don't freak out."

I nodded, fear in my eyes, "Okay. I'm sorry." I said then started to move out of the room.

"Hold it there Missy. I never said you could go without a punishment. Two weeks grounded to school and back home then straight to your room. Got it. You are grounded." My shoulders tensed, my Mom's version of grounded is way different than what my friends would think in the last town.

"Mom." I huffed. My mom gave me that look that said 'be quiet or it will be worse' so I shut up.

"Got it grounded for two weeks. Starting now?" I asked.

"No starting tomorrow, so when you head for school tomorrow don't go anywhere else but there, and usually on Mondays I would ask you if you had any homework, but since you skipped you don't, so room. Now, and no dinner." My mom instructed. I nodded, then headed up the stairs to my room.

When I got to my room I started to notice how weird it was. It was bare beside where I put my books. 'I really need to put up some of my art.', I thought. I went to lay down on my blankets to think, but the minute I laid down my mind went straight to Ethan. On how when I looked at him it seemed like the whole world just vanished. Before I knew it I was passed out.
