Chapter 6: Sparks
Sparks saunters over to the techies' station "well time to find out what I'm really made of." She mutters to herself. A small slender girl looks up "Hello there, I have heard of you, you must be the new recruit. "Sparks studies her for a moment. Her hair was cut short, paired almond brown eyes, and had on a long dark blue almost black coat with a pair of thick navy blue leggings and black boots. She points a screwdriver at Sparks "Before you make another step into my space, who are you?"
Sparks takes a step back, "Me? I am Sparks that's what everyone calls me." The girl squints her eyebrows and turns around revealing the techies symbol on the back of her jacket lined with a small corset. "I am Miran....' Sparks smiles then walks over to her curiously to see what she is doing. "Whoa you're working on a shadow cloaking transmitter?"
Miran shrugs. "Well I'm just repairing it. It is what keeps this place invisible to the satellites and this is the core of it technically. I'm surprised you recognized it."
Sparks hands her a small wrench "yeah I hacked the militaries secret files that was how I found out what this looks like." Miran looks at her necklace watch "well it's the end of my shift... You're the fresh meat right? I'll help you tomorrow if you want alright; just come a little bit more early."
Dang I wish I could really figure out what my power is...but I don't think that will come to me easily. "Yeah, Miran I guess I'll see you tomorrow then."
Miran rolls her eyes "Do you want to spend the day with me to figure out what your power is?" Miran walks to the door opening it. Sparks turns after nearing the door. "Yeah that would be nice where are we going?"
"Spark, I need you to sit in that chair." Sparks leans against an empty table, "why?" Her teacher sighs, "to figure out what kind of power you have. Techies like me usually pick up on them quite fast." Sparks sits down into the dentist looking chair. "Now I am going to have to put a device on your head." Sparks let her put on a crazy hat that had several fiber optic wires attached to it. "hmm, what is this?" Miran sets it on her head, "This is a brain wave transmitter, you will be pulled into a series of tests and it will help you and I know what you can do by calculating what your brain patterns are. There are no wrong answers." Sparks was not too sure about this, she began to feel her stomach churning. She leans her head back and closes her eyes as the tests begin. A series of audio recordings begin to echo in her ears and pictures appear in her mind. She almost forgot to ask if the tests would be painful. Thankfully, they were just a series of simple brain games, like out of three objects what would be the most useful in a computer, a paper clip, a gypsum crystal, or a double A battery.
Sparks finishes her twenty-problem test. She snaps out of her thoughts to see a bright white light casting light on her. Miran presses a button on the chair to let Sparks sit up, she then punches things in on her tablet in her right hand. Sparks pulls the device off her head. Miran looks at a see-through glass screen full of statistics, "So what is my diagnosis teach?" Miran puts the screen away after looking at the results, "you have Physio-technokenesis. Which means that you can manipulate your surroundings to become technical but not change the properties of the original object, for example, you can take a block of concrete and turn it into a boom box if you want to." Miran puts her hands on her hips, "go ahead and give it a try...Just breathe and, concentrate." Sparks places her hand on top of a brick that looked like it was being engineered by a techie to be a surveillance camera, "Hmmm this is an interesting piece of equipment but it needs many more parts to work like a power source to make it work, a unbroken camera, etcetera." Miran shifts her weight, "well you can make it work, go ahead and try." Sparks closes her eyes to imagine the camera working. She opens her eyes, to find it in the same state as before. This is harder than I thought. "Miran, what if I don't have a gift or power or whatever it's called?" Miran shakes her head, "That machine does not lie, you are blocking yourself from your potential. Clear your mind from all thoughts." Sparks shrugs her shoulders and tries again, nothing happens again. Frustrated, Sparks opens her eyes and slams her hand down onto the table, "Miran thank you for trying to help me, but my day has been very long and-"
"Sparks you did it!" Sparks looks at the brick, it was the same. "Look at the table silly." Sparks looks at where she slammed her hand down to see light blue lines fizzing out in a grid-like pattern forming a small square beneath her hand. Overcome by joy, Sparks sees what it really is, it became a digital picture frame showing all the pictures on her phone. "All of these pictures are on my phone, how did this happen?" Miran smiles and shrugs her shoulders, "I am not entirely sure, most of that is up to you on what things turn into." Sparks waves her hand over the flat picture frame a couple of times, "How do I get it to turn off?" Miran crosses her arms, "Try thinking something of what you just thought?" Sparks places her hand on top of the picture frame and makes a fist instead of a flat hand. The pictures disappear and the grid turns red and snakes towards Sparks' fist. "It worked!"
