i. through the eyes of dove
The Silvers children grew up rather close. Of course, there was the occasional arguments and the pulling of hair, but they always solved things out. It was them against the world.
Avalon Silvers was the eldest of the three. He was always told by his parents it was his job to protect his sisters and the family name. He always found it odd because there was no one to protect him.
Many knew the name, Victoria Silvers. Tori, as many called her, had a bit of a tricky situation. She had left a crack in her family's name when she had left them for blood traitors.
Dove Silvers was the last of the Silvers children, and quite frankly, she felt she was the last for everything. She was last to go to Hogwarts, last to find out about her sister's true sorting, last to be noticed by anyone.
When Avalon Silvers went to Hogwarts, Victoria and Dove grew closer. They were constantly together, almost like twins despite the fact they were two years apart. Dove and Tori would keep each other company while their parents holding their "very important meetings" down in the dining room. Neither of them were old enough to understand what was truly going on.
Dove could remember one night there was a bad storm during one of these meetings. The trees knocked against the windows, creating scrapping sounds and images that resembled monsters when lightning flashed through the sky. Dove, who was eight at the time, was supposed to be in bed. She tried her hardest to shut her eyes but the noise made it unbearable.
A loud book of thunder caused Dove to jump up in fear as it shook through the house. She immediately dashed out of her bed and down the hall towards the stairwell where she planned to go fetch her mother. But the sound of voices filled the house as Dove came closer and closer towards the railing and she realized her father's meeting was still going on.
Lighting from outside flashed through the dark houses lighting up untouched corners. Dove glanced back down the hallway, her sister's room coming into view. She silently opened her sister's door and peeked inside.
Victoria was sound asleep during this whole thing. Their mother always used to say Victoria could sleep through anything. However, Dove did not want her to sleep through this.
"Victoria!" Dove whispered. "Victoria!" She put a hand on her shoulder and began to shake. "Victoria! I'm scared! Vic-tori-a!" Dove shook her sister awake roughly.
"Wha-What. What?" Victoria asked groggily as she rubbed her eyelids. She sat upwards, blinking a few times. Victoria took one glance at Dove before looking back outside and then pulled her blanket down. Dove crawled inside the bed as thunder struck once more. She flinched.
"Don't worry," Victoria said through a yawn. "It's just thunder. I won't let anything hurt you."
But everything changed when Victoria turned eleven. She, like her brother, also left for Hogwarts. Dove waited for weeks for a letter from her older sister. She didn't notice the way her parents whispered as she'd wait by the windowsill waiting for a barn owl to fly by.
Dove wasn't sure why no letter came, but she just assumed Victoria was too busy to write. When Victoria and Avalon came home for Christmas, Dove was more than thrilled. She rocked in her heels as she squinted at the many children exiting the Hogwarts Express. She saw Avalon wishing his friends off and found Victoria talking to two redhead twins.
She greeted her sister joyfully and immediately began asking questions of all sorts about Hogwarts, who her friends were, and about the Slytherin common room. There was an odd tension in the air and Dove couldn't understand why. It wasn't until days later she learned the truth. Victoria was not like the rest of her family.
And now there was no one to shield her from the monsters of the night.
When Dove turned eleven, she too went to Hogwarts, where she decided she would create her own group of friends. She didn't need her brother nor her sister. She had herself, and that was enough.
She met Draco Malfoy on the train, as she had already been familiar with him since their parents had been friends many years before. He had introduced her to Pansy Parkinson and Daphne Greengrass, with who she'd soon share a dorm with. She was, too no one's surprise, sorted into a Slytherin. She knew her place, but she couldn't help but feel her sister's stare.
Her first years at Hogwarts weren't exactly bland. Of course, she was under the watchful eye of her older brother, who was willing to tell her mother and father anything if she stepped too far out of line. Dove secretly couldn't wait until he graduated.
Though, she felt torn between herself as she would watch her sister be surrounded by a group of friends who seemed to care very deeply about her. She almost envied her sister.
Her envy only began to grow in the coming years as her sister stopped coming home altogether. Dove would sometimes sneak into her room in the middle of the night just to feel as if she was there. She noticed the pictures kept face down on the bedside table in case her mother or father came inside. It was of Victoria and the two red-headed twins on broomsticks as all of them laughed.
Dove began to stare at that picture with pure bitterness. Victoria was able to come and leave as she pleased. She was able to escape the expectations, the rules, the crowds, the looks people gave as you walked into a room.
Victoria escaped it all and left Dove behind.
When Dove was fourteen she was finally free from her brother's supervision and the knowledge of her parents at Hogwarts. She could do as she pleased. She was finally content.
That feeling of contentedness was short living, however. One morning she watched as her older sister slung her arm around Harry Potter, ruffling his hair like he was her own sibling. That's when Dove truly started to hate Harry.
She couldn't have said everything in her fifth year was so bad. At least, not for her. She had started dating Draco Malfoy in the beginning and had joined the Inquisitorial Squad along with her friends for use of extra credit. She quickly noticed how quickly power went to some of her friend's heads. She constantly watched as they abused their position and as the head behind them allowed it. Of course, she couldn't say she was innocent in that way either.
When Dove ended her fifth year she had an awkward conversation with her sister before watching her be spun around and kissed by Fred Weasley. She had noticed the white scars upon her sister's hand, Silvers are Slytherins. She picked up her trunk and headed over to her mother who stood alone. Her father had been caught at the Ministry with the other Death Eaters and was hauled off to Azkaban. She wondered if Victoria cared.
The summer of her sixth year, Dove felt isolated. She and her mother stayed home to avoid any press reports over the summer and the days would drag on. Draco very rarely answered any of her letters and when he did they were bland and short. She was losing touch with her other friends as well until little to no letters would arrive at the house.
When Dove had received her O.W.L.S. she was rather surprised to see how well she did in classes like Defense Against the Dark Arts. She had been coming down the stairs to speak with her mother when she stopped at the sound of her brother's voice.
"I was given a choice—"
"No, you weren't!" Dove's mother hissed loudly. Dove silently descended the stairs, creeping closer to the door to their kitchen. "Your father would have made you get the mark anyway! Did you really think you actually had a choice in the matter?"
Avalon was silent.
"She's only sixteen!"
"The Malfoy's son has already been initiated—"
"The Malfoy's were not in the position to turn any offers down after that little stunt in June." Her mother snapped.
"Father would—"
"Your father is not here. I wasn't able to stop you, but I will not let her go down the same road. She is a child. End of discussion."
Avalon seemed ready to reply back but the two of them stopped when they noticed Dove standing at the door.
Dove felt mainly alone in her sixth year. She continued to play Quidditch, but everything felt off. Draco barely spoke with her and was acting more and more odd until Dove practically just stopped trying. She worked hard in her classes. She certainly wasn't a top student, but she was impressive enough to be selected by Professor Slughorn for his Slug Club. It was after the stunt at Slughorn's Christmas party Dove broke up with Draco. She didn't need him. She didn't need anyone.
When Death Eaters had attacked the castle on that faithful night of June Thirtieth Dove had been in the library when it was announced the school was to go into lockdown. She remembered the way her heart pounded as she ran through the halls, trying to get down to her common room. she had taken a shortcut through one of the main hallways only to see her sister stupefied backward and her brother with his wand out.
Dove felt a rising wave a panic and looked down to see her sister's wand at her feet. She called Victoria's name and kicked her wand back towards her before turning around and running. It was not to her knowledge that Albus Dumbledore had died moments before then, nor that that was only the beginning of the nightmare that soon consumed the world around her.
Dove was sent to Hogwarts for her final year by her parents. Severus Snape was made Headmaster, so her father was more than happy to send his daughter to the school that year.
Little did he know it was a living hell, for her anyway.
Muggleborn students who did come were locked away in parts of the dungeons. Students were punished worse than ever by the Carrows. The Carrows were siblings sent by You-Know-Who to teach both Defense Against the Dark Arts and Muggle Studies.
In Defense Against the Dark Arts, Amycus Carrow taught his students cruelly. They were nearly forced to perform unforgivable curses on those who had received detention. Dove watched sickly as those like Crabbe and Goyle did it with glee. At first, Dove refused to participate. The Carrows did not touch her because of fear of what her father would do, and Dove knew this. But when she was caught letting young muggleborns out of their chains, the Carrows seemed to no longer care.
She was tortured so badly she ended up in the hospital wing. Her mother stormed into the school completely red in the face and screamed at the top of her lungs at the Carrows but it did nothing. When Dove was let out, the same punishments applied to her as they did to those like Neville Longbottom, who kindly suggested a cream to help with her bruises.
And when Dove Silvers was eighteen, she lost her sister completely. Tori died along with her fiancé Fred Weasley when Augustus Rookwood blew up a part of one of Hogwart's walls during the battle. Tori died without forgiving Dove, and Dove would live with that for the rest of her life.
The war was soon over. Voldemort was defeated by Harry Potter. His followers fled rapidly, Dove's father, grandfather, and brother among them. The Wizarding world was saved. But none of it mattered to Dove. Because Dove was not expecting to have to bury her nineteen-year-old sister.
