Chapter 37: Familiar Faces
Third Person POV
"Hey Rob, you plan on helping us anytime soon?" Cyborg said, tapping their leader on the shoulder.
Robin turned to his taller friend, worry evident on his face. He sighed and uncrossed his arms. "Sorry Cy," he said, ruffling his hair, "it's just I'm-"
Robin was cut off by Cyborg placing his large robotic hand on the raven haired boy's shoulder. "I get it man." He said, sympathetically. "But staring out what used to be our main window ain't gonna make him come back faster."
Robin sighed again. After Danny had finally composed himself, he shrugged off the Titans' comforting words and actions. At that time, he had had an oddly serious look on his face. The ghost boy knelt down, scooped up the elder halfa's body in his arms as if the man weighed no more than a feather and walked to the edge of the remains of Titans Tower. The white haired teen had stated a cold "Don't follow me" before flying away from the tower, leaving the other heroes behind in stunned silence.
"Hey Robin! Think fast!" Beast Boy shouted. Robin looked up quickly and saw a broom flying at him. He swiftly caught the cleaning item and stared annoyed at Beast Boy, who had a cheeky grin on his face. Starfire and Raven were busy moving the large pieces of rubble, and checking if anything had survived the destruction. They may be heroes but that didn't mean they were rich.
Cyborg gave his friend one last pat on the back before returning to his own personal project, mourning over the loss of his beloved couch. Robin looked out one last time over the vast sea surrounding their tower, before he began sweeping up bits of rubble and broken glass. He was worried about Danny and desperately wanted to go out there and find him. The teen had been through so much that Robin still barely knew about, and now he just lost someone who was apparently really close to him. Robin overheard the last bits of their conversation before Vlad had died, about Danny never forgiving Vlad but he would never hate him.
The bond between the two halfa's was incredibly strong, it made Robin question his relationship with Danny. He almost started to regret entering Danny's life again. Maybe it would have been better if he had just lived with knowing that his brother was alive and happy, and moved on.
The other Titans quickly glanced at their leader every now and then and watched as he mindlessly sweeped the floor. They were worried about their ghostly teammate too. It had now been almost 5 hours since Danny had disappeared with Vlad's body and Robin's patience was wearing thin.
All of a sudden, Starfire noticed a small white dot in the distance. She squinted and her face immediately lit up with joy. "Friends look!" She cried happily, "The Danny Phantom is returning!"
Robin immediately dropped his broom and rushed to where the main window once was. The other Titans immediately rushed to his side, awaiting their friend's return. Danny's form can into view and he was noticeably flying very slow. The teen no longer held Vlad's body, but there was something tucked tightly under his arm.
The Titans watched as Danny flew over their heads and landed behind them. The object under his arm quickly moved to the front of his chest and the teen hunched over and held it tightly, as if it would fly away if let it go for one second.
"Danny?" Robin tried, slowing walking up behind the teen. He reached out his hand to place it on Danny's shoulder, but the ghost boy shuffled away from the touch. Robin stared at his brother, hurt, as a million apologies ran through his head.
I'm sorry for leaving you, I'm sorry for not taking you with me, I'm sorry for not keeping in touch, I'm sorry for re-entering your life and screwing everything up, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you.
I'm sorry I didn't keep my promise.
"Robin." Danny said softly, interrupting the young hero's thoughts. "Can I talk to you privately?" Before Robin could answer, Danny quickly phased through the floor. Robin knew he had probably gone to the entryway Robin turned to look at his friends who gave him all looks of encouragement and hope.
He nodded and raced out of the room, heading straight down to the entryway while avoiding some broken steps. Vlad's attack had done more than just destroy the main floors of the tower it seemed. The tower as a whole seemed less stable as bits and pieces crumbled off the walls and ceilings. Robin finally made his way into the entryway and immediately saw Danny huddled into a little ball on one of the many couches.
Robin bit his lip nervously and took a seat beside Danny cautiously. Danny didn't move a muscle, as if he were a statue. He didn't even look over at Robin. The two brothers sat in complete silence, neither feeling like starting the conversation.
Finally, Danny spoke softly, "He did it for me." Robin perked up and turned to face Danny, who was hugging his knees as close to his chest as he possibly could. "He came back to Earth knowing he was already dying. He wanted to face me one last time, but due to his torture he couldn't remember the real reason why." Tears began to trickle down Danny's face as he buried it in his knees. "Even in the end, when he finally returned to sanity, he wouldn't let me kill him. He was ready to die by my hands, yet he realized that he couldn't do it."
Danny released his knees and sat properly, staring down at his hands. "These hands were made to save, not to kill." Danny curled his hands into fists. "That's what he said to me." Tears dripped off his face onto his hands as his small frame began to shake. "But if that were true, why couldn't I save him? I watched as he spiraled down this path and did nothing to help. I pretended to hate him for my own selfish reasons, and for what? To prevent the end of the world?" Danny lowered his head and placed it in his hands. "I'm a failure as a hero."
Although Robin had been listening silently all this time, Danny's last comment made him snap. He jumped to his feet and stood in front of Danny, roughly grabbing his brother by the front of his shirt and pulling him to his feet. "Don't you dare say you're a failure of a hero!" He shouted angrily. "I've seen what you've done Danny! You have faced countless enemies nearly always single-handedly. You have saved Amity Park from ghost invasions. Heck, one of your plans even saved the entire world!"
Danny tears stopped flowing as he gawked up at Robin. He sniffed as Robin released the front of his suit and he sank back down to the couch. "The last thing he said to me... was 'Continue to be the greatest hero the world has ever seen'." A sad smile graced Danny's tear stained face. "He always saw the best in me, no matter what."
Robin smiled softly and gently gripped Danny's shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze. Danny looked up and Robin, giving him a silent thank-you for snapping him back to his senses.
Robin resumed his seat beside Danny on the couch. "Now, I doubt you wanted to call me out alone just to have a pity party. So what's on your mind?" Robin chuckled.
Danny sent his elder brother a dirty look, but quickly became serious. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously and avoided looking his brother in the eye. "I'm leaving Titans Tower." He said quietly.
The colorfully clad hero's eyes widened. "Oh, yeah... I guess that makes sense." He started, scratching his cheek lightly, "You'd probably want a few weeks to recover from something like that. Just let me know when-"
"No Dick." Danny interrupted softly. The halfa locked eyes with the leader of the Titans, no sign of the joking hero anywhere on his face. "I mean I'm leaving. For good." He stood up, walking away from the couch, his back to Robin. "I'm going back home."
Robin got to his feet as well, crossing his arms. "Alright then, you seem pretty determined. I won't try to change your mind." He smiled, "Tell Bats I say hi when you get there."
The white haired teen sighed, turning to face Robin. "Dick, I'm going back to Amity Park. I'm not going to Bruce, not back to my room here, I'm going home." Danny said, his tone dead serious. He saw the confusion and slight hurt hidden beneath Robin's mask, so he quickly explained. "It's not that I hate being here, or that I hate you or Bruce. I just realized where I really belong." Danny smiled. "Jump City has enough protectors. Amity Park is where I'm needed. It's where I belong."
Robin watched his brother in silence, too stunned to say anything. Deep down, he selfishly wanted to tell Danny no, and make him stay at the tower. But Robin knew that would be the worst possible thing he could do to Danny. All along he knew this was the truth. Danny's life as a Grayson had been over for a long time now. He was Danny Fenton now, and Robin had just refused to acknowledge that fact for the selfish reason of making his search for his missing brother these past few years mean something.
Understanding was in Robin's eyes as he gave his brother a smile. He chuckled and punched Danny lightly in the shoulder. "Alright Phantom, I get it. You're already bored with the team thing and want to get back to being a solo hero." He chuckled. Danny puffed out his cheeks angrily, but he knew Robin was joking. Robin grabbed Danny in a headlock, ruffling the halfa's hair much to Danny's displeasure. The younger teen phased out of his brother's grip, causing Robin to lose his balance slightly. Danny took that opportunity to give Robin a push, sending the leader of the Titans sprawling on the floor.
Danny laughed at Robin, who was sending him death glares that couldn't be seen due to his cape currently covering his face. Robin flipped back his cape and noticed something shiny in the corner of his eye. He turned to see a small vase shaped like a football on the couch where he and Danny had just been sitting. The vase looked like was a football stand, with a silver stand holding a gold and green football. The top of the football had a small neck sticking up from it with an opening like a vase being sealed by a metal stopper. There was a name engraved on the silver base, but Robin couldn't really see what it was.
Before Robin could even ask what it was doing there, Danny walked over to it and picked it up hugging it to his chest. "He always liked the Green Bay Packers, so I thought it was fitting." The young halfa said sadly.
A sinking realization settled in Robin's gut. "Danny I..." No words came out. There was nothing he could say to make the situation better. Nothing he could do to help.
Danny shot him a weak smile. "I'm fine, don't worry." He said, closing his eyes as he smiled. "I'm going to take him with me and give him a proper burial." He looked up at the ceiling, feeling torn. "Should I say goodbye?"
Robin laughed, "They'd hunt you down if you didn't."
Danny laughed in agreement and he hovered above the floor, ready to phase back up to the main level. The halfa looked down at his brother, realizing it would be easier for both of them if he took Robin with him. But, it would be a little awkward to hold his brother's hand and carry him by the waist. And he didn't want to give Robin the urn so he could carry him by the arms.
Robin sighed, "I'm used to being carried by this point Danny. It's fine."
A blush rose in Danny's cheeks. Was he that easy to read? Danny floated back down and grabbed Robin by his bicep, transferring some of his flying ability to him. It would make him easier to carry. The two phased through the ceiling back to the top floor of the tower. Danny dropped his and Robin's intangibility and were surprised to see the other Titan members huddled near the remains of the couch, talking among themselves.
They immediately stopped when they saw Danny and Robin and rushed over to them. Starfire and Beast Boy flung their arms around Danny in a large hug, Cyborg placed his large hand on the teen's shoulder and Raven stood off to the side, giving Danny a small smile of support. The young halfa nearly teared up again, but he stayed strong, thanking them all for their support.
He told them of his decision to leave the Titans, and it was met with expected reactions. They were sad that their newest teammate was leaving them but they could understand his reasons, even without knowing all the details. They gave him a bag to carry the urn in, so his arms wouldn't get tired on the way home which he was very grateful for.
Danny walked over to where the main window used to be, staring out at the horizon. Robin walked up beside him, staring out with him. "I'll tell Bats, so don't worry about taking a detour." Robin said, placing a hand on Danny's shoulder. Danny sent him a grateful smile. The elder hero moved closer to the young halfa. "Hey, don't be stranger now." Robin said softly. "I mean, after all this time it would be nice to see your face every now and then."
Danny smiled. "Okay, then you promise not to forget to write this time." He retorted.
Robin laughed, "Alright, I deserved that." He pulled Danny into a hug, before quickly separating. "Well, I'll guess I'll see you around." Robin finished awkwardly.
"Yeah." Danny said, giving him one last smile. Danny turned and waved at the other Titans one last time before flying out into the distance.
Robin watched until Danny's form could no longer be seen from the tower. Once the halfa was out of sight he turned back to his friends with a wide smile. "All right gang, let's get this tower back in shape!"
The Titans groaned, but smiled all the same. They all hoped Danny was truly happy where he was now.
Um... Normal Line Break here... Man, that was serious... I actually have nothing to say... Um, just keep on reading I guess. I think I need some comfort food right now. I should call my mom and tell her I love her.
"On your left!" Tucker shouted at Sam, who jumped out of the way of an oncoming car.
Sam was quick to recover and fired the Fenton Bazooka at the giant car monster ghost. Jazz activated the Fenton Peeler and jumped into battle. She fired at the main screen on the beast, causing minimal damage. "Dang, he's gotten stronger!" Jazz shouted.
"Don't worry princess!" Jack Fenton shouted from the Fenton Family Ghost Assault Vehicle. "This spook is no match for Jack Fenton!" He ready a sonic cannon and fired at the car monster ghost. The blast struck the monster ghost square in the chest causing it to stumble back a few steps, but it quickly regained it's balance. One it's arms stuck out and the Fenton Family Ghost Assault Vehicle began to float.
"Dad!" Jazz shouted.
A flash of blue ran by the fiery haired girl and dove into the Fenton Family Ghost Assault Vehicle. It emerged seconds later, carrying Jack on its back. "Honey, I hate to say it but I think you need to start eating less pudding." Maddie said, panting slightly.
"Really?" Jack asked, genuinely concerned.
Sam fired a wrist ray at the ghost, just to draw its attention away from the Fentons. "How's the hacking going Tuck?" She shouted as she dodged an energy blast.
"Not great!" He replied, "Technus upgraded his systems again. We're dealing with a Technus 3.0 here!" Tucker was madly typing on his PDA, unaware of a car that had just been thrown in his direction.
"Tucker!" Sam screamed, but her friend looked up too late. The car was right above him. "Aw man." He said, as he raised his arms over his head.
Suddenly, the car was blasted to pieces and Tucker was grabbed and carried to safety. Tucker peeked open his eyes and saw he was no longer in danger. "Wow, that was a close one." He sighed, patting his savior on the shoulder, "Thanks Jazz."
"Um, I'm not Jazz." His savior replied. Tucker finally looked at the person who saved him and his jaw dropped to the ground.
"Danny!" He screamed, going limp with shock. The others looked up at the sky and overflowing joy lit up on their faces as they each called the young halfa's name.
His best friend chuckled happily, floating down to the ground where his friends and family had gathered, also staring at him in shock. "Did you miss me?" He asked, with his regular goofy smile on.
He was immediately swarmed in a group hug. "You're lucky ghost boy." Sam said, squeezing her boyfriend tightly. "I was about to send a Booo-merang with a combat boot tied to it your way." She finished with a light punch on his arm.
The group hug ended quickly as they were still fighting a ghost after all. Danny flew back up into the air, staring down his foe. "Hey Technus, did you hear? Danny Phantom is back and he's better than ever!"
"We'll see about that ghost boy!" Technus replied. "Now that I am Technus 3.0 your powers are no match for me!" As if to prove his point, Technus began absorbing more energy from around him and his size increased.
Danny laughed. "We'll see about that!" He shouted as he fired a barrage of ecto blasts at his enemy with his friends and family assisting him. He looked down at them, seeing the joy on their faces at having him return, the passion in their fight against Technus. He was happy beyond words. 'It's good to be back' He thought to himself. And he was never going to leave again.
Not too far away from Amity Park, at a small cemetery, in a spot not easily accessible, rested a tombstone. It had no name, no date of birth or death, just the word 'Dad' engraved on it. Some say that if you go to that spot and wait until late at night, you can see a white haired ghost boy appear and chat with a transparent wispy figure.
Danny Phantom was once again Amity Park's sole protector. He would continue to protect it with his friends and family by his side. He knew where he belonged and where he was needed. He knew who he truly cared about with all his heart. The people he had met in Amity Park were his family. He wasn't just Danny Phantom.
He was Danny Fenton.
THE END
A/N: And that, dear readers, brings 'The Ghost Brother' to a close. If I'm being honest, this book has been a wild ride for me. At first, I wasn't really keen on the idea as there are many crossovers like this out there, but I was determined to make mine somewhat original. And I personally think I did pretty well. Sure, there were speedbumps, writers' blocks, slumps, plot changes, but it all led to this product which I can honestly say I am kinda proud of. Sure, it's not perfect and it definitely has things I could've improved on, but in all honesty, I really enjoyed writing this.
The amount of support and kindness I have received from you all during the process of writing this book was amazing and really helped me out. You remained patient with me when I disappeared for months at a time, you never forgot about me and you all gave me so much support and kind words that I was nearly moved to tears at times. When I first started out on Wattpad I honestly didn't think many people would enjoy my work. Yet here I am with over 800 followers.
Anyways, enough about me. What I really am trying to say is thank you. Thank you for your support, thank you for your kindness, and thank you for reading this book. I sincerely hoped you enjoyed it.
Stay tuned for another update detailing my next few projects ;)
(I mean... if you want to... idk if you actually liked this enough to read more of my stuff but... a writer can hope right?)
