Chapter 2: A New Parent

A/N: Since you all loved the first chapter so much I decided to be nice and give you a second one ASAP! Hope you enjoy!

Third Person POV

The police had finally arrived an hour after they cleared out the main tent. A full investigation had begun on the circumstance of John and Mary Grayson's deaths. During this time, Dick and Bruce were still up on the platform with Danny.

A paramedic had gone up there earlier to check on them, but none of them agreed to move. The paramedic had gone down the ladder and resorted to just waiting at the bottom until they came down. Meanwhile, Dick was trying to coax Danny into going down.

"No," Danny kept whispering, "They'll fall. I'll fall. We all fall."

"Danny, it's okay, you're not going to fall. You're safe," Dick whispered to his brother. He brushed a few locks of hair off of Danny's sweaty forehead. He was taking in short, quick breaths.

"Excuse me. Dick? Was it?" Bruce asked. Dick nodded, "Would you mind if I tried talking to him?" Bruce asked.

Dick looked from Bruce to his brother, "I don't know."

"Trust me. I know what I'm doing," Bruce assured him. After a moment, Dick nodded. Bruce knelt down and moved closer to Danny.

"Hello, my name is Bruce Wayne. What's your name?" the billionaire asked.

"D-Danny," the young boy stuttered, his eyes blank.

"Nice to meet you Danny. If I may, how old are you?"

"T-twelve," Danny replied, almost robotically. His breathing began to even out a bit.

Bruce gently placed a hand on Danny's shoulder causing the boy to flinch a little, "Would you like to get down Danny?"

Danny shook his head, "Too..... far."

"Danny, you're safe. No one else is going to fall. You're brother is here beside you to help you," Bruce told him calmly.

Danny took a few deep breaths and looked at Dick, "You won't let me fall?"

Dick tousled his brother's hair, "I'll never let you fall Danny. I promise."

Danny nodded and, with Bruce and Dick's help, slowly stood up. They guided him to the ladder and helped him get down where the waiting paramedic rushed him away to be checked over for injuries.

"Thank you Mr.Wayne. For helping me get Danny down," Dick said to the man.

Bruce gave him a small smile, "You're welcome Dick. And please call me Bruce."

Dick nodded, his dark hair falling over his eyes, "I should check on Danny. Thanks again." Dick rushed off to see his brother.

Bruce walked over to Commissioner James Gordon. "How did this happen?" Bruce asked the Commissioner.

He stroked his chin in thought, "It was most likely an accident but I'm not ready to rule out homicide just yet."

"Commissioner! You should see this!" an officer cried. Bruce and Gordon walked over to the officer.

"What is it O'Brien?" Gordon asked.

"Take a look at this," the officer said as he held up a piece of rope the was connected to the bars. It was slightly frayed.

"Looks like it was cut," the Commissioner observed.

"Seems to me like someone wanted to make sure the Flying Graysons fell," Bruce added.

"Sure looks like it," Gordon stated.

"Commissioner Gordon!" another officer shouted. Gordon turned around to see the approaching officer. With him was Jack Haly, "Sir, we may have a suspect."

"His name is Tony Zucco. He came by before the show, threatening me and ordering me to pay him 'protection' money. When I refused he stormed out angrily, saying I'd regret my decision," Mister Haly informed them.

Bruce recognized the name. Tony Zucco was a small time crime boss who wasn't that well known in the underworld. Because of that, Zucco was always trying to make a name for himself. But he never did anything that drew Batman's attention

"Put out an APB on Tony Zucco. I want this man found and brought in for questioning," Gordon ordered.

"Right away Commissioner," the officer replied as he walked away with Mister Haly.

Bruce looked at the large bloodstain in the middle of the ring, then over to the Grayson brothers. "What's going to happen to the boys?" Bruce asked.

"Not sure. They don't have any other family. A few circus folk are willing to take them in, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. One or both of them might have seen Zucco and they could be targeted by him. I've thought about-"

"What if I took them in?" Bruce interrupted. He had grown fond of the boys while he was up there on the platform with them.

Gordon looked at him shocked, "Are you sure? I have-"

"I'm sure Jim," Bruce interrupted.

Commissioner Gordon nodded, "Alright, I'll make some arrangements after I talk with the boys."

Gordon began to walk away but Bruce grabbed his shoulder, "Would you mind if I talked to them for a bit?"

He shook his head, "Not at all. Maybe you will get something out of them that I won't."

Bruce smiled, "Thank you Jim."

Gordon nodded and walked off. Bruce walked over to the Grayson brothers. Danny was sitting on a cot with a blanket wrapped around him while Dick just watched him from an opposite cot. Danny had a blank stare on, as if his mind was elsewhere.

Dick heard Bruce approaching and looked up at the billionaire. "Hi Bruce," he said. Dick moved over so that Bruce could take a seat. He sat beside the young acrobat and looked at Danny.

"How is he?" Bruce asked.

Dick shrugged, "He hasn't said anything since he came down. The paramedics say he has a slightly sprained wrist and a few possibly bruised ribs but nothing serious. They say he's just in a state of shock right now."

Bruce frowned slightly, "You're taking this rather well."

Dick placed his elbows on his knees and held his head in his hands, "I guess it just hasn't really sunk in yet. I'm trying to pretend it's just a dream. That they're not really gone. But they are."

He looked up at Bruce, "I'm trying to be strong for Danny."

Bruce placed a hand on Dick's shoulder, "I know how you feel Dick. I lost my parents when I was very young. It was a dark time for me but luckily I had a friend to help me through the darkness."

Dick sat up straight, staring at the billionaire. "Dick, I'm offering to be your friend and Danny's. If you'll let me," Bruce told the boy.

Tears spilled from Dick's eyes and he hugged the man. Bruce was taken by surprise at first, but quickly hugged the boy back. He rubbed the boy's back in small circles, trying to calm him. After a while, Dick stopped crying.

He removed himself from the embrace and wiped away his tears, "Sorry about that," he apologized.

Bruce waved his hand, "No need to apologize. But I'm assuming that's a yes?"

Dick gave him a small smile and nodded. Bruce smiled back, "Excellent. I'll start making the arrangements."

Bruce stood up and Dick began whispering to his brother Danny. Bruce was worried about the younger of the two Graysons. It was understandable, the state he was in. The boy just had a near death experience and lost both his parents. Hopefully he'll come around soon.

Bruce pulled out his cell phone and dialed the Manor. "Hello?" Alfred's voice said from the other end of the line.

"Alfred, would you prepare two extra rooms? We may be having some extra guests staying with us for a while," Bruce informed.

"Right away Master Bruce. Any specific requests?" Alfred asked.

Bruce looked back at the brothers, "Make sure the rooms are side by side."

"As you wish Master Bruce."

"Thank you Alfred." Bruce hung up and put the phone back in his pocket.

He turned to watch the boys once more. Danny was starting to talk to Dick, that was good. Bruce felt a smile creep up on his face. He had a feeling these two boys were going to make a big difference in his life.
