Chapter 18: Straight from the Bat's mouth
Third Person POV
"Friends, I do not think this is a good idea." Starfire said as they prepared to contact Batman. Cyborg had told them his idea about contacting Batman and seeing if he would give them any information about the mysterious 'Crow'. They knew it was a long shot, since Batman was even more stoic than Robin was, but this was the only option they could think of. They needed to find Robin's friend before the teen wore himself to the point of no return. But by contacting Batman, they would be going behind Robin's back. Each member of the team rarely went behind the other's backs, and even when they did it was mostly for small, harmless reasons. The Titans could understand Starfire's apprehension towards the plan but it needed to be done.
"It's probably a terrible idea, but what choice do we have?" Cyborg said typing away on the main computer, "Robin is falling back into old habits. We have to stop him before it gets worse." The Titans understood what Cyborg meant by 'old habits'. It was exactly like the times Robin had become obsessed with finding Slade. Except this time, instead of Slade trying to kill Robin or the Titans, Robin was doing it to himself. Starfire sighed, coming to sit beside Raven on the couch and watch Cyborg work. Beast Boy was currently in the kitchen making himself some breakfast. He was also trying to make something for his friends, but was comically failing. He even had to put out a small fire or two.
Raven was reading a book on the couch, trying to tune out the noise Beast Boy was making in the kitchen. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Starfire anxiously wringing her hands. "Starfire? Are you alright?" She questioned, still holding her book open.
Starfire turned her head to face Raven, her cheeks turning light pink in color, "Oh um, well..." She began as she stopped wringing her hands and placed them on her lap instead. "I am just having the concern for Robin." The Tamaranean girl explained finally, "He is very determined to find his friend and I fear that he may eventually harm himself if he continues with his current ways of searching." Starfire reached up to pull on a lock of her red hair.
Raven slowly closed her book and made sure to place a bookmark in it so she wouldn't lose her place. She placed the book on the spot beside her that wasn't occupied by a worried alien girl. Turning to her friend, Raven thought over what she was going to say. She was never one for emotional talks and wasn't the best at making people feel better, but Starfire was her friend. She felt like she should do something. "Starfire, Robin is going to be fine. He's been through worse." She began, "He's just stubborn like his mentor. He wants to do everything by himself."
"But why?!" Starfire interrupted, throwing her arms up into the air, "Why must he do things alone? We are all friends, we are a team! He should not feel the need to do things alone!" The Tamaranean teen lowered her arms and slumped back into the couch, her eyes sad.
Raven looked around to see if Beast Boy or Cyborg were paying attention to them. Luckily, Cyborg was still working on contacting Batman and Beast Boy was finishing up breakfast. Sighing, Raven tentatively reached out to her friend and, after a moment of hesitation, she placed her hand on Starfire's shoulder. Starfire immediately stopped sulking and looked over at Raven, confusion replacing the sadness in her eyes. The two girls spoke not a word, they just sat there in silent understanding.
"I think I got it!" Cyborg shouted. Beast Boy immediately stopped what he was doing in the kitchen and ran over to the couch, leaping over the top and planting himself in between the two girls causing the silent moment between Starfire and Raven to end as Raven quickly removed her hand from her friend's shoulder. He was bouncing with excitement.
"Dudes! Isn't this awesome! We're about to talk to Batman, one of the world's greatest heroes!" The green skinned teen said excitedly. His eyes were lit up with joy and he was bouncing on the couch so hard it was a miracle the thing was still in one piece.
"This isn't a pleasure call Beast Boy, it's business." Raven informed him, reaching for her book once more. Beast Boy turned to her and pouted.
"Please do not argue friends." Starfire said calmly, a small smile on her face, "Maybe after the business we can be having the small bit of pleasure talk?" Beast Boy and Raven looked over at Starfire with raised eyebrows while she smiled innocently.
"Okay guys, here goes." Cyborg said, typing on the main control panel. A large screen took up the window of the main room and a waiting icon appeared. Beast Boy groaned which made him receive a slap on the back of the head from Raven. Soon, the waiting icon disappeared and the stern face of Batman filled the screen. Beast Boy accidentally let out a yelp of surprise and quickly slapped his hands over his mouth.
"What is it?" Batman questioned, the lenses in his cowl narrowed. He had been in the middle of some important work when he had gotten the call. Poison Ivy had broken out of Arkham along with Harley Quinn and the two were currently hiding out somewhere. He needed to find them quickly. But no, instead of finding two dangerous criminals he was now dealing with teenagers.
Cyborg was the one to respond to the big bad bat, "Sorry to interrupt you Batman, but this is important." The robotic teen was doing his best to match Batman's steely gaze but he was inwardly terrified and felt the need to excuse himself from the room. It made him wonder how long it must have taken for Robin not be terrified of the legendary 'Bat-Glare'. Though Cyborg had to admit, Robin did a near perfect impression of it.
Batman raised an eyebrow beneath his cowl. He had to admit he was surprised when he saw Cyborg's face appear on his monitor. He had been communicating with Robin from time to time on the subject of finding Danny. Unfortunately, neither of them had gotten any major leads. Not until recently at least. Robin had contacted him a few hours ago saying he might have found a lead to Danny's whereabouts. Apparently it had something to do with a small town somewhere a few miles away from Wisconsin. But that was a subject for another time. "Whatever you need to say, be quick about it. I am in a rush." The caped crusader said sternly.
Cyborg swallowed and stood up as straight as he could, "We need to know more about Crow." It was clear, straightforward and confident sounding. The Titans waited quietly for Batman's answer, none of them knowing what to expect. He could easily say no and that would be that, but on the slight chance he told them just a little information about the mysterious 'Crow' Robin had been looking for for so long, they could help their friend find him.
Batman sighed. He knew now what was most likely going on. Robin had told them little to nothing about Crow and they were curious about who he was, or Robin had taken over and was worrying his friends with his methods. Alfred had scolded him many times that Batman's methods of finding people were influencing Robin and he was soon going to follow in his footsteps. Leave it to Alfred to always be right. If Robin was doing all the work by himself and it led to his teammates contacting him, the situation had become dire. He didn't even see Robin in the room with the other Titans. Frowning, Batman thought over what he should do. This matter didn't involve them and if they got too close, Robin's identity could be at risk. Yet in the other hand, Danny had been missing for a long time and neither Batman nor Robin had been able to find anything solid on his whereabouts. Maybe having a few extra sets of eyes out there might not be such a bad idea.
"Crow was a former partner of mine." Batman began. The Titans perked up and all leaned forward, listening to every word Batman said. "He and Robin were very close. When Robin left it hurt Crow deeply. One night on a mission, Crow was badly injured and taken to a trusted friend so that he could heal. But apparently his injuries were more severe than I had originally thought." Batman pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes, remembering that terrible day. "He had gained a case of amnesia and attacked the friend. He then fled and I could not find him."
The Titans frowned at this information. What Batman was telling them they already knew. Robin had told them all this when Batman had come to the tower almost ten months ago. "Do you have any clues as to where he might be?" Raven asked, stepping up to the screen.
Batman folded his hands under his chin, "Robin and I had been speaking for a while, but neither of us had gained any leads." The Titans' faces fell.
"That is, not until recently."
Each member of the Titans looked back up at Batman as the brooding hero continued. "He contacted me a few hours ago saying that he might have a lead. It had something to do with a small town a few miles near Wisconsin. I haven't had time to look into it, but maybe the four of you can help him." A red icon appeared in the corner of Batman's screen and he muttered a curse under his breath. Ivy and Harley were on the move. He looked back to the Titans, "If that's all you needed I have a lot of work to do. Goodbye." And with the touch of the button, the Teen Titans' faces disappeared from his monitor.
Back in Titans Tower, the four Titans stared out the window of the main room. "That... Was... AWESOME!" Beast Boy shouted, leaping off the couch. "We talked to Batman! The Batman! Isn't that awesome?!" The small teen looked at all of his friends, but none of them were paying attention to him.
"A small town a few miles from Wisconsin. That doesn't give us much to work with." Cyborg stated.
"We have worked with less in the past. Besides, how many small towns can there be near this 'Wisconsin'?" Starfire offered. Cyborg turned back to the computer to plug in and do some research. Raven went over to help him while Beast Boy sulked back to the kitchen to finish making breakfast, which had started to slowly catch fire due to him forgetting to turn off the stove in his excitement. Seeing that all her friends were currently doing something, Starfire slipped out of the room and floated through the halls of the tower. She came to a stop in front of Robin's room and hovered there for a few seconds. She let her feet touch the ground and quietly reached for the door knob. Turning the handle, Starfire poked her head into the room and saw that Robin was still fast asleep.
His uniform was currently wrinkled and his spiky hair was a mess. Subconsciously, he pulled a sheet over his small body and nestled his head into the pillow. Smiling, Starfire closed the door as quietly as she could. "We are going to help you find your friend Robin," she whispered, floating down the halls back to the main room, "whether you would like us to or not."
A/N: Hey guys, sorry for the long wait for an update. Also sorry if any of the characters seem a bit OOC in this chap. I do try my hardest to keep the original characters as true to their canon personalities as possible but it has been a while, so I deeply apologize for that. And, another apology for how short this is. I promise the chapters will slowly start getting longer again. Anyways, thanks for reading and I'll see you in the next one!
