Chapter 15: Returning Memories

Third Person POV

The funny thing about losing your memories, is that you always feel like you're missing a part of yourself. You keep on going, moving forward with your life, but you still linger on the things you can't remember. It's a horrible feeling, forgetting your past. You forget your family, your friends, memories of those you cared about. You grasp at every straw you can to pull your memories back to you. But it's never enough. And you never find peace in just forgetting.

There's always that little lingering voice, whispering to you, but you can never quite make out the words. It whispers your name, your past, your memories, but never loud enough so you can clearly hear it. It taunts you, and you just want to either make it speak up, or snuff it out.

Everyone is a puzzle, and there are some who are missing their pieces.

hi. littlest line break here. just wanted to say hi. oops, i already did that. oh well, enjoy the chapter! ^-^

Darkness. Suffocating darkness all around him. There was no light, he couldn't even see his own hands in front of his face. He wondered where he was. He couldn't remember anything, why couldn't he remember anything?! His breathing came in short and quick and he felt himself grow light headed. "Danny." A voice whispered in his ear. The boy turned in a circle, looking for the source of the voice that whispered that name. Was that his name? Was he Danny?

"Boys! It's almost showtime! Hurry up and get into costume." Danny turned around to the sound of a female voice. He squinted, searching the darkness for the person who called out, but he saw nothing but shadows. There was a small glimmer of light in the distance, and the boy could see a wispy figure standing in front of it, waving at him.

"Okay mom!" Another voice returned, this time directly beside him. Danny whirled around to see another shadow standing beside him. Danny backed away from it as it turned to him, revealing a white smile and blue eyes. "Race you there!" It shouted, running away from him. Danny watched it leave, feeling as if he knew who that shadow was.

Just then, Danny felt a foot connect with his back and he was knocked to the ground. He cracked his head on the floor and white spots filled his vision. "Stay focused. You can never let your guard down." He heard a gruff voice say behind him.

"Hey, let up a bit. We're just beginners remember?" Danny fought off the white spots and turned onto his back to see two shadows towering over him. The smaller shadow, that Danny could have sworn was the one that had run away from him earlier, extended his hand to Danny. "C'mon Danny, let's show him what the Gray-" The shadows voice was abruptly cut off before it resumed. "-brothers can really do."

Danny's eyes widened. "Brothers?" He whispered as he reached for the extended hand. Just as his fingers brushed against the shadow's, Danny soon felt himself falling. His heart clenched with fear as he heard the screams of thousands around him. He heard a sickening crack and the bleak world of darkness around him quickly turned into a sea of red. And he was drowning in it. Danny struggled to keep above the water, but the waves grew stronger. Each one forced him down lower into the depths. Eventually, he stopped fighting against the waves and let himself be swallowed by the red water, taking a deep breath before his head disappeared below the surface.

"Don't look down." A childish voice in his head taunted, the voice almost singing it's words. "Down is a bad, bad place. You won't like it." But Danny didn't listen, and he looked down, though he immediately regretted doing so. When he saw the twisted and bloody bodies of man and woman in bright costumes, he nearly vomited on the spot. His mouth opened and the red water around him filled his lungs. "I told you so. I told you so." The voice mocked, repeating the words over and over. The words echoed around Danny and he felt himself sink deeper into the depths of the blood red sea, it's murky waters filling his lungs with poison.

"Don't lose focus!" Another voice shouted. He felt something grip his arm and pull him out of the sea of red. Danny looked up to his rescuer and saw a man with the face of a bat. He tried to scream, but only red water came out. He was choking on it and the bat-faced man had a tight grip on his arm.

"Please... don't hurt me." The teen whispered, coughing up the last bit of water from his lungs. His arm was released and Danny found himself now staring off the edge of a building. For some odd reason, his knee hurt.

"You could have gotten yourself killed! You could have killed a man tonight!" A voice shouted at him. Danny turned to see the same two shadowy figures from before, but he could sense the anger between them. Both figures were staring at him. The smaller figure turned to the larger one and started shouting at it. "In case you have forgotten over these past two years, they were my parents too! I has as much a part in this as him!"

The figure then turned to face Danny. "Don't defend him! He's always doing this! Putting others in harms way with little regard for the outcome! I'm sick of it!" The smaller shadow walked to the edge of the building. "He raised crime fighters, not us." The figure hissed before leaping off the building into the deeper depths of the shadows that surrounded them. The larger shadow turned to Danny. It walked over to him and Danny tried backing away from it. He was too slow and the shadow gripped his shoulders. Danny froze in fear as the shadow leaned in close to his face. He was just starting to see some details forming on the face of the shadow when he was shoved off the edge of the roof.

"Time to wake up."

I AM THE AMAZING LINE BREAK! Hope you guys are enjoying yourselves! NLB says hi ^-^

Danny bolted upright in bed, gasping for breath. His heart was pounding in his ears and sweat drenched his body. He gulped in large breaths, trying to slow down his racing heart. The memories of his horrible dream still floated through his mind. He tried desperately to cling onto them while also trying to make sense of it all. One thing stuck out the most in his mind though. It was that one of the shadow figures from his dream had called him his brother. Did he have a forgotten brother? If so, did his brother know he was missing?

The sound of even beeps reached his ears and he finally noticed his surroundings. Danny was in a white room, surrounded by beeping machines. There was an IV drip beside him, the needle sticking out of his arm. He was sitting in a bed, with sweat soaked sheets. There were many cards and balloons in the room, all saying some form of 'Get Better Soon!' on them. Danny's attention was quickly drawn to the door in the room opening and a familiar nurse entering.

"Oh you're up. It's about time." She said. Danny recognized her immediately. Her long blonde curls, her petite frame, her olive skin. And of course, her happy, sparkling gray eyes. Natalie. She tilted her head at the boy. "Hm, you look familiar." She snapped her fingers. "Memory boy! Danny or something right? How've ya been?"

Danny let his lips curl into a smile. "I've been okay." He replied. The teen remembered Natalie from his first visit to the hospital. When Maddie and Jack Fenton had found him in their trunk.

Natalie chuckled. "You seem to be doing better than okay for a kid who got over one thousand volts of electricity pumped into him not too long ago." Electricity? Not too long ago? What was she talking about? Natalie's eyes widened as she saw the teen's confused expression. "You don't remember?"

Danny furrowed his brow. "Remember what?" Danny inwardly groaned, he forgot something again. He searched his memories for what he could possibly be forgetting, but all he could think about was the strange images his dream had left behind. Shadow figures, a blood red sea, two mangled bodies in beautiful costumes, a man with the face of a bat, and a shadow calling him his brother.

Natalie sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. "What's that thing called, where something has happened before. Déjà vu is it?" She muttered. Walking to the bedside, she checked Danny's vitals and his IV drip.

While she was doing that, Danny asked her about what she had been talking about. Natalie informed the teen that he had been in a coma for almost a week after a near death experience. According to his friends and family, they were messing around down in the basement and Danny had gotten electrocuted by one of his parents tools. Danny nodded as the memories slowly came back to him. He remembered that it hadn't been a mere 'tool' that almost killed him, but a portal to another dimension. A realm of the dead.

Natalie's wrist watch beeped with an alarm and a crash could be heard just outside the door. "Right on time." She chuckled as she wrote on a clipboard. Danny looked from her to the door just as Jack, Maddie, Jazz, Sam and Tucker all ran in. They all shouted his name in unison when they saw him awake and sitting up in bed. Maddie went straight to his side and wrapped him in a hug, tears of joy spilling from her eyes. The others quickly followed suit, but after a quick scolding from Natalie about how the teen was still recovering, they all took their respective turns.

Most of them said the same thing, they were glad he was alright and his parents gave him a light scolding about messing around in the lab, but their concern over that was overshadowed by their joy of Danny being okay. When Sam talked to Danny, he could tell she was on the verge of tears herself. She probably felt horrible. It was because of her Danny walked into that portal and almost died. She had felt so much guilt and had barely gotten any sleep the past few nights. Danny assured her that he was fine, which caused Sam and Tucker to share a look.

Tucker turned to Danny's family. "Can we have a moment alone with Danny?" He asked. The elder Fenton's looked ready to protest, but Jazz interrupted them.

"Of course, we'll just be outside." Jazz herded her parents out the door, leaving the three friends alone in the small room. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife and the same could be said for the silence. No one knew what to say or how to start. So Danny took the initiative.

"I remember what happened." He stated. Sam and Tucker's eyes became glued to their friend. "I remember what happened in the portal, before, during, and after." The teen held his hands in front of his face, the memories of seeing his own bones flashing through his mind. "Something happened to me in that portal." He whispered.

Sam cleared her throat. Danny lowered his hands and turned his attention to his gothic friend. Brushing a few stray locks of hair out of her face, Sam started to tell Danny what happened after he exited the portal. "W-When Tucker and I went over to see if you were okay, you looked... different. Your hair was snow white, and your eyes were a glowing green. The suit you had been wearing when you walked in had inverted colors and your skin was a bit more tan." Sam wrung her hands together and Tucker picked up from where she left off.

"Then the weirdest thing happened. These two white rings appeared around your waist and spread across your body. When they were finished, you were back in your regular clothes, and the rings just vanished!" The geeky male exclaimed.

Danny bit his lip, his hands starting to shake. The teen lowered his head and his bangs cast a shadow over his face. "Did you tell them what really happened?" He asked simply. Tucker and Sam shook their heads.

"We mentioned that we were messing with the portal, but we didn't tell them that you had been inside it when it activated." Sam stated, her eyes unfocused. Danny nodded. He opened his mouth to tell them about his weird dream when his friends cried out in horror. Their eyes scanned the room and his bed.

"Guys, what's wrong?" He asked, but that only caused his friends to scream again.

"Danny? Where are you?! How are you doing that?!" Tucker cried.

Danny frowned. "I'm right here in front of you. Where else would I be?" Sam and Tucker's eyes focused on Danny. They gasped when they saw him. Danny tilted his head. "What?" He questioned.

"Dude, you disappeared!" Tucker shouted. Sam nodded in agreement with Tucker's statement. Danny was about to protest how that was impossible when he felt himself getting lower to the ground. He looked down and saw that his body was passing through the bed.

His eyes widened in fear. "Guys! Help!" He shouted, flailing his arms. Sam and Tucker rushed to his sides and tried to grab his arms but their hands passed right through. The three friends began to panic. Tucker and Sam tried again and again to grab his arms and failed. It was only when Danny started passing through the floor below the bed were Sam and Tucker finally able to grab the teen's arms. They pulled him up and Danny rose out of the floor, through the bed and sat back on the top of it. Danny leaned back against his pillows and his friends pulled up two chairs to sit in.

After catching their breaths from that terrifying experience, Sam spoke up. "Whatever happened in that portal did more than just give you a large shock to the system." Danny nodded, staring at his now shaking hands. His eyes were wide with fear and images flashed through his head, none of which he could make sense of.

Looking to his friends, Danny said what they were all thinking.  "We can't tell anyone about this."

A/N: Hey peoples. Sorry that I haven't updated in forever. Life's been a bit crazy. But whatever, I'm not going to whine and complain about it to you guys. I'm (partially) back to normal and should be back to keeping a steady flow of updates coming. Thanks for reading and I'll see you all in the next one! (Also sorry this is kinda short, I'll make the next one longer I promise!)

(Also good news for 'I'm Adopted?' readers! I have finished the rewrite of the story and the final chapter is being put through the final editing phases. I will be posting it as a completely new book as I made a lot of changes because, if I'm being honest, it sucked majorly. So I hope that all this work I have put into it has made it a lot better and you all will enjoy it! Thank you all so much for your patience in this! The new book should be posted very soon!)
