Chapter 14: A Lab Accident
Third Person POV
Robin gently rubbed his thumb on the corner of the old picture. His eyes drifted upwards towards the secret compartment in his closet. The picture hadn't been the only item he'd hidden. Hidden in the compartment along with the picture, was a letter. A letter that had arrived almost a week ago, addressed to him. He had opened the letter, but the second he saw the handwriting he put it back in the envelope it came in. At the time, he didn't care what the letter said and had no intention of ever reading it. But now... He reached into the compartment and pulled out the ripped envelope, placing the picture where the envelope once rested. Robin took the letter out of the envelope and started to read.
'Dear Robin,
I know there is a likely chance that you aren't going to read this letter, so I will be coming to Jump City in about a week to speak with you if you haven't contacted me before then.'
Robin softly growled at the words. How was it that Batman could predict almost every single one of his actions? "He's Batman." Robin muttered.
'At the small chance you do read this letter, I will be straight with you. Crow is missing. He has been missing for around six months now and Dr. T has stated that, in their medical opinion, Crow has a case of amnesia. I have searched Gotham high and low for any trace of him, but I couldn't find him. While I searched for him, I also searched for you. Your disappearance hurt Crow greatly, and he felt as if you hated him. When I found you I was so relieved that you were safe. I didn't want to tell you about this, but after what happened the last time I kept a secret from you I didn't want a repeat.
Robin, I need your help in this. Crow could be in great danger and we have no way of knowing. Your new team can help as well, just make sure your identity remains a secret, as well as Crow's. I know we didn't part on good terms, but I hope that you can put aside our differences just this once, for Crow.
Batman'
Robin folded the letter back up and placed it back in the envelope. He returned the envelope to the secret compartment, his expression as hard as stone. He would work with Batman, but only this time. For the sake of his brother. As he replaced the panel in the closet, Robin whispered a promise to himself, "I will find you Danny, even if it takes the rest of my life, I will find you. And when I do, I'll swear to never abandon you again.

Danny woke up in his bed on a early Saturday morning. He had been living with the Fenton's for half a year now and life couldn't be better! He had a caring family, two awesome friends, and he was doing extremely well in school. Aside from Dash making it his personal mission to make Danny's life miserable, everything was going great!
There was still the nagging voice in the back of his mind, telling him to do this and do that, but he'd learned to ignore it. The only thing that bothered him was his dreams. He would feel as if a part of his lost memories were returning, then something would happen causing him to wake up. Either the sound of an explosion or a crowd screaming followed by a sickening crack, then all he would see was red.
He had told Jazz about these dreams and she had said it was his subconscious mind trying to regain his lost memories, though something was preventing it from happening. She had told him that, in time, his memories would return. He just had to be patient and not force it.
Danny quickly got dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast. He was surprised to see only Jazz at the table, reading a book and munching on a piece of toast. Danny poured himself a bowl of cereal and sat down beside his adoptive sister. "Where's mom and dad?" The teen asked.
"Where they've been for the past three months." Jazz replied, not looking up from her book. Danny glanced at the door leading down to the lab. He'd only been down there a few time, as it was pretty weird. All sorts of weapons lying around, plans for more weapons, and a weird looking machine in the back of the lab. According to Jazz, Maddie and Jack called it the Fenton Portal. It was a portal that could breach the barrier between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead. They'd been working on it for as long as Jazz could remember, and they had recently been spending a lot more time with it.
Despite it being extremely odd, Danny liked how unique his new family was. He finished off his cereal and placed his dirty bowl in the sink. "Tell mom and dad that I'm meeting Sam and Tucker at the park." He said as he headed out of the kitchen. Jazz mumbled in reply and Danny headed for the front door.
"KIDS!" Jack's voice boomed from the basement, causing Danny to freeze in his tracks. "Come down here quick!" Danny walked back into the kitchen and shared a confused look with Jazz, before they both headed down to the lab. Once down there, they spotted the two elder Fenton's inside the portal doing some last minute adjustments. Jack smiled when he spotted the kids and quickly rushed over to them. "Good you're here just in time!"
"Just in time for what?" Asked Jazz.
Maddie walked over to her husbands side, "The activation of the Fenton Portal!"
Danny's eyes widened, "You finished it?!"
Jack and Maddie nodded. Jack pulled out a graph sheet detailing the portal process and a pointer, "We're finally going to bust open the wall into the ghost dimension!" Jazz rolled her eyes at this, but Danny was fully interested. Jack picked up a plug and a socket, shooting a smile at Maddie who smiled back. He jammed the plug into the socket, staring eagerly at the portal. The machine made a soft whirring noise, and sparks came from inside it. There was a large spark of electricity and a flash of light. And then... nothing. The whirring stopped as did the sparking. Jack looked confused as he unplugged and plugged the portal over and over. He continued to do so until Maddie placed a hand on his shoulder.
The two elder Fenton's faces held saddened expressions and Jack let the plug fall to the ground. "All that work for nothing." He muttered as he and Maddie made their way out of the lab.
Jazz shook her head, "I knew all of this ghost nonsense would be nothing but trouble." She followed her parents out of the lab, leaving Danny all alone. The teen stared at the large portal, fascinated by it. Deep down, he was upset it didn't work too. He started to walk over to it, but then paused, turned, and ran out of the lab. He was going to be late meeting up with Sam and Tucker! After shouting a quick goodbye to his parents, he ran out the door and headed towards the park.

"Earth to Danny, come in Danny," Sam said, waving her hand in front of the raven haired teen's face.
"Hm? What?" Danny replied.
"Dude, you just zoned out for like a minute." Tucker informed him, taking a bite out of his burger. The three friends had decided to head to the Nasty Burger for lunch and were now sitting in one of the booths in the restaurant.
Danny rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous habit he had picked up, "Oh, sorry. Just got lost in thought I guess."
Sam and Tucker looked at their friend in concern. They knew about his amnesia and how he got whenever he tried thinking about his past. "What's on your mind Danny?" Sam asked.
Danny sighed. Should he tell them? His parents hadn't said that he couldn't tell anyone about the portal. And besides, Sam and Tucker were his best friends he didn't keep secrets from them. The raven haired teen sighed, "It's just... My parents have been working on this project of theirs for years and they finally got to test it today, but it didn't work. They were pretty bummed about it."
"What were they working on?" Tucker asked.
Danny chuckled, "Believe it or not, a ghost portal."
"Ghost portal?" Sam and Tucker asked in unison, their eyes widening with curiosity. Danny nodded. A rare smile spread across Sam's face.
"You have to show us!" She cried, standing up.
"Uh, I don't think that's such a good-" Danny began, but Sam wasn't listening. She grabbed both boys by the arm and pulled them out of the restaurant, heading towards Danny's house.
Tucker pouted in protest, "Could you at least waited until I was done my burger!?"
Sam ignored Tucker's whining as she began to ask questions about the portal, which Danny began to answer. This continued all the way to Fenton Works.
Normal Line Break here. How you guys doing? Hope you're liking the chapter!
"It's down here." Danny said leading his friends down to the lab. When they arrived at Fenton Works, Jazz had gone out and his parents left a note saying they were at the store buying fudge. Danny was reluctant to show his friends the lab without his parents knowing, but Sam was persistent. The three made their way down the stairs into the large lab. Sam and Tucker had amazement in their eyes as they took in the massive lab, and the portal. They both began to look around and Sam found a cabinet filled with HAZMAT suits. She pulled out a white and black one.
"This one looks like it would fit you Danny," she commented, inspecting it. She looked at the front and raised an eyebrow at the Jack Fenton logo located on the chest. She smiled as she got an idea. She raced past Danny, throwing the suit at him and running upstairs. She returned a few moments later holding a camera. "Go stand in front of the portal, I want a picture." She said, a cheerful look on her face. Danny looked unsure but did as he was told, standing beside the portal, holding the suit Sam threw at him. "Smile!" She said as she snapped the picture and Danny blinked rapidly due to the flash.
"Okay, I showed you the portal, so can we get out of here now? My parents could be back any minute." He said, glancing towards the stairs. "Besides, it doesn't even work." Sam and Tucker walked over to him.
"C'mon Danny, a 'Ghost Zone'? Aren't you curious? You gotta check it out." Sam encouraged, walking in front of the portal and looking inside.
Danny walked next to her, peeking at the interior of the portal as well. A smile appeared on his face as he realized the truth behind Sam's words. "You know what? You're right! Who knows what awesome, super cool things exist on the other side of that portal?" Danny stepped away from the portal and changed into the suit, zipping up the front. Sam noticed the large Jack Fenton logo on Danny's chest.
"Hang on," she said, walking over to her friend. She reached for the logo and pulled it off the suit, holding it up. "You can't go walking around with that on your chest." She said, pointing at the Jack Fenton face.
Danny smiled and walked over to the portal. He looked from his friends to the portal before stepping inside. It was dimly lit, and Danny could see all the wire and pieces of metal that made up the inside of the portal. He brushed his hand against the side and pressed against the wall. He felt something small and round against his palm, and a small beep could be heard.
Then all Danny felt was pain.
He felt thousands of volts of electricity course through him, burning him from the inside out. He screamed in pain. It felt as if every molecule in his body was being rearranged. His body no longer felt solid.
Was he dying? Is this what dying felt like? Every fiber of your body being ripped apart by a force so your soul could go free into the afterlife? Was this the end? If so, what was waiting for him on the other side?
But Danny didn't want to die. He wanted to live! He wanted to know who he was! He wanted to remember his past! He couldn't die, not yet!
Danny's eyes felt like they were being burned by acid and his head pounded with pain.
He could feel the energy passing through him, like a river rapid. It bonded to him, morphing his body right down to his DNA. He felt his soul leaving his body, passing right through him as if his body were made of liquid, not flesh and blood. Danny stared down at his body, still being electrified. He could still feel the pain of the electricity, but it was less intense than it had been. The corners of his lips turned upwards in a small smile, there wouldn't be anymore pain. He wouldn't feel anything. He would be at peace.
But then Danny caught a glimpse of his friends. Of Sam. The horrified look on the girl's face as she watched her friend be torn apart. As she felt guilt for making him go into the portal. His death would be on her hands.
Danny came to a conclusion. He wasn't going to die today. So, instead of letting his soul be freed of it's flesh prison, he returned to it. The process was not pleasant, as the pain of over one thousand volts of electricity returned to him, as well as the pain of his body being torn apart molecule by molecule. But Danny fought through it, he needed to live, he needed to keep fighting.
He needed to see Sam again.
With a final cry of pain, Danny's soul rejoined its body, and fresh screams came from his throat. But then, the electricity died down. Danny saw nothing but green around him and he glanced at his hands. He gasped in horror as all he could see was bone, but then white gloves appeared over them. Danny pressed a hand to his throbbing head as he stumbled out of the portal, his legs weak. The teen managed to make it to the edge and grabbed onto the side for support.
His vision was becoming extremely blurry and he heard a flurry of voices around him. Danny squinted and saw the forms of his friends approaching. Sam grabbed him under the arms, lifting him away from the portal, but Danny slipped right through her grasp. He twitched on the ground as the last bits of electricity faded from his body, before succumbing to the darkness that enveloped him.
Sam and Tucker could only stare on in shock as they looked upon their friend. His suit had become inverted in color, and his hair was snow white. Sam had noticed when she pulled him away from the portal that he glowing green eyes as well. But the weirdest part was that he had literally slipped through her fingers. The two teens stood, watching over their friend, too stunned to think of anything to do to help him. They watched as two white rings appeared around his waist, spreading over his unconscious form, and morphing his HAZMAT suit to what he had been wearing under the suit.
"Danny? Are you home?" Jazz called from upstairs. She noticed the door to the lab was open. "Odd." She said aloud as she made her way down the steps. "Danny, I don't think mom and dad would be happy if they found you-" Jazz cut herself off as she saw her little brother lying on the floor, burn marks on his body and groaning with pain. "Oh my god!" She shouted, rushing to her brother's side. She turned angrily to the two teens who were watching in stunned silence. "Don't just stand there! Call an ambulance!" She screamed. Tucker and Sam snapped out of their trance and ran upstairs to find a phone. Jazz gently touched her brother's shoulder, but immediately withdrew her hand. He felt like he was on fire!
This was bad, this was worse than bad, this was awful! She didn't know what happened, but from the corner of her eye, she saw the glowing green swirl of the ghost portal. She looked from the portal to her adoptive brother and back again. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes. "Oh Danny," she whispered.
"What have you done?"
