Chapter 13: An Unwanted Reunion
A/N: What? No, it has not been almost 2 weeks since I last updated... Okay it has. I'M SORRY! I've been dealing with some... issues, as well as a small case of writer's block. But I'm back now with a new chapter which I hope you all enjoy!
Recap: We last left out beloved Teen Titan heroes standing at their front door staring speechless at the fearsome Batman. Let's see what happens next.
Third Person POV
Robin was the first to snap out of the trance the appearance of Batman had put the Teen Titans in. The lenses in his mask narrowed and he clenched his fists. "What are you doing here?!" He demanded. Robin could practically sense the eyebrow raise from beneath the Dark Knight's cowl. The shock was wearing off the other Titans, and Beast Boy had shifted back into his normal form, bouncing with excitement and a wide grin on his face.
"Wow, you're Batman! And you're at our tower! What are you doing here? Is there some big bad super-villain you need our help with taking down? Or, maybe you're here to ask about joining the Justice Leag-" Beast Boy's excited babbling was cut off by Batman raising his hand to halt him. He smirked at the green skinned hero and turned his attention onto his former protege.
"The reason I am here, is to speak with you Robin."
Starfire grinned and floated a few feet off the ground, clasping her hands together, "Oh this is being the most wonderful! Don't you agree Robin?" The cheery Tamaranean shot a smile towards her friend, but it soon fell as she spotted his firm frown.
"As a matter of fact, I don't." Robin said darkly. The Titans looked on their friend in shock. He had never said much about his time with Batman, hell he hardly mentioned the man. It was almost like he hated the word. The Titans never pressed Robin for any information regarding his time with the Caped Crusader, they all had their pasts and secrets and they all respected that. Everyone had their right to tell what they wanted. But they thought he might be the slightest bit happy to see him after being away from his former mentor for just over half a year.
Batman sighed, "Robin I-"
"Why are you here?" The young hero interrupted. The other Titans were shocked by the show of disrespect. Batman simply narrowed his eyes.
"As I said earlier, I came to speak to you." Batman said sternly.
"Whatever you have to say, I don't care enough to hear it. So just head back to Gotham and keep putting criminals in Arkham."
Batman's patience was running very thin with his former partner. He needed to speak with him in private and the boy's stubbornness was proving to be most irritating. Batman could only blame himself for that. But if this was the way that the conversation was going to continue to go, Batman didn't want to think about what would happen.
"Robin, this is a matter of great importance and I have to-"
Robin took a step towards the Dark Knight, "I don't know if you've realized this, but Jump City is now Teen Titans territory. And you're trespassing." Robin stared straight into the lenses in Batman's cowl, with no sign of fear visible on any part of his face. He knew who the 'Big Bad Bat' really was underneath that cowl, and it didn't scare him. In fact, it made him that even more fearless. Batman towered over the teen, and Cyborg attempted to move towards the two, just in case a fight broke out. But Raven stopped him by placing a hand on his shoulder. She knew that the two needed to work out their issues on their own. The Titans interfering would just make things worse. Cyborg understood the subtle message and all four of them took a step back.
Starfire was concerned for her friend. She did not wish to see any harm come to him, especially from his old mentor. She could understand his need to face this alone, but she wished that he would ask them for some assistance. If it was necessary, she knew that she and the other Titans would protect their friend from harm. Beast Boy didn't know whether to feel protective for his friend or go into total fanboy mode at seeing the mighty Batman and his partner, er, former partner have an epic standoff.
"I'm only going to say this one more time Robin. I need to talk to you. It's extremely important." Batman warned. Robin answered by landing a kick to the vigilante's chest, causing him to be knocked back a few steps, wheezing as his breath had been knocked out of him. "If this is the only way you'll listen, then fine. Time to talk." Batman reached for his belt and pulled out a Batarang, throwing it at the teen. Robin dodged and his friends had to scramble out of the way to avoid being struck with the bat-shaped weapon. The two former partners being to battle each other, each working to gain the upper hand.
"I left for a reason! And I didn't come back for a reason! I finally found people who don't put others in harms way for no reason!" Robin shouted as he extended his staff and took a swing at Batman. The vigilante dodged and returned with smoke pellets. He threw them at Robin and they released a thick smoke, causing the teen to hack and cough as he swung wildly with his staff. He knew that he was no match for Batman, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try. There was still a lot of anger he held towards his former mentor, despite still thinking of him as his father.
"I never meant for him to get hurt! I was not responsible for his actions!" Batman shouted back, his dark tone not once faltering. The Titans were left wondering who this unknown 'him' was as Batman dove into the smoke and rammed straight into Robin, effectively knocking his staff out of his hand. The two emerged from the cloud of smoke, and Batman placed his foot on Robin's chest. His friends saw his predicament and rushed to assist, only for Robin to hold up a hand in an order to halt.
Robin quickly reached for his belt and removed a Birdarang, throwing at the Dark Knight. The older hero was distracted and Robin was able to push Batman's foot off of him. He rolled away from the man, heading straight for his dropped staff. He picked up the staff, twirling it in the air before pointing it at Batman, "You were every bit responsible!"
Batman prepared for another attack, raising his fists. But he soon lowered them and sighed. "Yes, I let Crow go alone. I didn't inform you of it and because of my carelessness we almost lost him. But now, something else has come up. It's the reason I came."
Robin's anger faded, a concerned look crossing his face. Fear clenched his heart. It was only then he realized that Crow wasn't with Batman. Before he could even utter the question, Batman answered it for him, "Something has happened to Crow."
Robin eyes widened beneath his domino mask. He turned to his friends who were watching him with eager eyes. Robin turned back to Batman and walked over to the older hero. "You have five minutes," he hissed, "then you leave."
Batman nodded and began to quietly inform Robin of what had occurred almost six months ago. Beast Boy shifted into an owl in an attempt to eavesdrop on their conversation. Doing that only received him a slap from Raven, and he shifted back into his normal form. "Who is this Crow they speak of?" Asked Starfire.
"Not sure. But whoever he is, he obviously is important to Robin." Cyborg replied.
"C'mon dudes, I'm sure it's nothing." Beast Boy tried to reassure.
"YOU WHAT?!" The team heard Robin shout, causing their attention to be immediately drawn to him.
"You were saying?" Raven said to Beast Boy, who huffed in reply and crossed his arms. The conversation between Batman and Robin was gradually becoming more heated, and despite the two heroes doing their best to keep their voices down, the Titans couldn't help but catch every other word or two. Most of it didn't make sense without context but there were a few words that raised a few questions between the Titans.
"Brother"
"Memory"
"Missing"
"Months"
The longer their conversation went on, the more questions the Titans had. Eventually, Robin just walked away from Batman, shouting one final phrase at him. "If anything happens to him, it's his blood on your hands!" With that, Robin stormed past his friends back into the tower. Batman looked as if he wanted to go after the teen, but decided against it. Instead he pressed a button on his utility belt and the Batboat surfaced from the edge of the island that Titans Tower rested on. Giving a final glance at the Teen Titans, he climbed in and the Batboat descended into the water.
Once the sleek black boat could was out of sight, the Titans raced into the tower to find their friend. It didn't take them long. Robin was sitting in the main room on the couch with his head in his hands. Starfire floated over to her friend, sitting on the couch beside him. "Robin? Are you alright?"
Robin sat up and gave Starfire a small, forced smile. "Yeah Star, I'm just fine."
Cyborg raised an eyebrow at the teen's remark. "C'mon man, we all know something is up. And I know that we all respect each others privacy here, but I think this is something that you shouldn't keep bottled up."
Beast Boy jumped onto the couch on the opposite side of Robin, "Dude, you can tell us. We're your friends." Cyborg and Raven joined the others on the couch, Raven even showing a bit of concern on her normally neutral features.
Robin sighed, "Fine. My... An old friend of mine has gone missing. He was assisting Batman and got injured. According to Batman he took my... friend, to a trusted doctor and left him there. Then he, freaked out and ran away. And to top it all off, Batman is pretty sure he has a case of amnesia too." The Titans were shocked at the amount of information they got out of the normally shut in teen, and silence filled the Tower.
Raven was the first to break the silence, "Well, as your friends, we'll do everything we can to help you find this other friend of yours." She gave Robin a genuine small smile and Robin returned it. All the Titans nodded in agreement with Raven's statement.
"Thanks guys, this means a lot to me." Robin told them.
"So how long has this friend of your been missing?" Cyborg asked.
Robin frowned at the question. "Six months."
Starfire gasped, "And you are only now learning of his disappearance?" Robin nodded, his features becoming hardened. It was just like Batman to withhold information like that from him for this long. He'd done it before, when Zucco had been in Gotham and he sent Crow out alone to face him, which almost ended in more bloodshed.
"No problem, I can still look into databases surrounding missing person reports, sightings of missing people, and areas around where your friend went missing." Cyborg assured him.
"Thanks Cy," Robin said as he stood up. He thanked them all again for their support and headed into his room. Once he was sure that his door was locked, he headed over to his closet. He opened the closet and pushed past all his spare uniforms to a loose panel in the back of the closet. He removed the panel and pulled out a worn picture. It was faded and the edges were starting to turn yellow, but it was still in relatively good condition. Robin smiled sadly at the picture.
"I'm sorry little brother. I'd promised I'd never let you fall, and I failed in keeping that promise."
A/N: So, I hope this slightly longer chapter makes up for the long hiatus. Really sorry about that again, life's been rough. If it's any consolation, I've been listening to the Star Wars Cantina Band song for the past half hour on an endless loop and I'm pretty sure I've lost the last remaining bit of my sanity. Anyways, hope you all enjoyed and I'll see all you lovely peoples in the next one! Happy Holidays!
