Terrified, Ed picked up Princess, rushing to
his car. She was heavy, but he didn’t care.
He’d carry her all the way to the hospital if
he had to.

He didn’t bother with calling 9-1-1. She might be dead by the time they arrived.

They always took their time to answer calls in the black neighborhood of Florida City.

“Hold on, baby! Hold on!”

Thomas ran behind Ed. “I’m going with you. I’ll drive.”

Thomas heart beat out of his chest, his breathing coming in short spurts.

When it dawned on Georgia that Princess could lose her baby she ran inside the house and grabbed her car keys. Her head spun so fast she nearly vomited on
her carpet.

“What have I done, Lord? My anger has gotten the best of me. God, I don’t want the baby to die.”

It may be too late.
