Chapter 14
"Shania!" he yelled.
I sat there unable to move, my eyes were becoming glossy and my heart was filled with sorrow, anger and hurt. My stomach was churning, the pain between my legs subsided, and for a moment I was lost in deep thought.
Everyone who tried to protect me died.
Alia died escaping with me! Bromez died protecting me! Rodriquez died rescuing me!
What they all had in common? ME!
My allies and best friend died trying to save ME. Why did they have to do it? Each risked their life for me, Shania Jakes or more accurately Shanoya Brooks...
Who was I to deserve their sacrifices? I was no one special; I was nothing but their destruction.
Everyone around me died... even my parents... Their deaths were all because of ME. I'm a monster that misfortune follows... I could never have a normal, peaceful life... I just couldn't...
A tear slipped from my eye followed by many others as my dam broke and I wiped them away.
Now was not the time for tears. I gripped the gun that Daniel handed me. My mind was set; they were going to pay for killing Rodriquez.
I rose from my sitting position, cocking the gun. Daniel stared at me trying to figure me out but I didn't give any explanation. The gunshots seized and I could hear cartridges dropping to the floor, they were changing their ammo.
I ran and dove onto the wooden floor my silk dress providing a nice surface to slide on. I slid through the doorway, firing shots at my enemies. One by one, the shots hit them and one by one, they fell.
Daniel now joined the fray. One of the men received a headshot while another got a bullet straight to his heart.
They were all dead now, all seven of them.
Daniel reached down and pulled me up. I pulled free from his grip as he set me to my feet and then ran to the men, kicking them. My emotions were running wild, controlling me and clouding my better judgement. I hated these bastards for killing Rodriquez.
"This." Kick. "Is." Kick, kick. "For." Kick. "Killing him, you sons of bitches."
Kick, kick, kick, kick...
Just then, I felt Daniel's strong arms wrap around me, pulling me away from them as I cried struggling out of his grip. He released me, grabbing my shoulders and forced me to face him.
"Shania! Stop! He's gone... but you're here. He chose to help you and he knew the consequences so stop it! Now, please come with me, we need to get out of here," he cupped my face, using his thumb to wipe away my tears.
I nodded not trusting my voice not to break as I spoke.
He grabbed my hand and led me right, opposite the bodies. We walked back to back, moving in a circular motion looking for any guards. We couldn't risk getting injured...
We were almost at the end of the yellow hall when in one of the hall mirror; I spotted a guard to Daniel's left. I twisted around and shot him in his head as he raised his hand ready to fire. Daniel looked at the body, and then thanked me. I dropped the empty gun and we continued down the hall. When we reached the end of the hall, he gripped my arm and sprinted down the next one pulling me along with him. I tried to keep up with him as best as I could.
The pain between my legs came back now and it stung like a bitch. I winced as it did; he stopped in his tracks as he noticed my discomfort. He gave me his gun, picked me up bridal style, and ran towards the stairs at the end of this hall. He descended the stairs as quickly as possible. Looking over his shoulder, I see a guard, I pulled the gun, aiming and shot him as he fired, the bullet hitting Daniel in his shoulder. He grunted but continued down the stairs.
As he reached the last of the wooden stairs, he placed me unto my feet, grabbing the gun and looked into my eyes.
"Stay here. I'm going to check if it's clear," he pulled out a gun from out of his holster and placed it in my hand.
With that, he left me on the stairs. The sounds that I heard next left me frozen in my spot. I heard shots being fired, men crying out, bodies dropping and bullets hitting the walls.
I was scared that maybe Daniel was killed but as fast as the thought came I pushed it away... He was going to return to me.
The place then went quiet. I heard footsteps approaching where I was, I cocked the gun and aimed.
As the head popped out in front of me, I rose the gun to greet it. The person stopped and then I noticed it was Daniel. I placed my hand at my side and took a deep breath. He wasted no time as he grabbed me, pulling me across the hall past the dead bodies on the floor and then into a bathroom.
In this same blue-tiled bathroom, there on the floor was a big hole.
"What happened?" I asked.
"We blew it out when we came. Now, let's go."
Daniel grabbed me and gently lowered me into the hole, my feet came in contact with water and my nose met a foul scent. He then climbed down and as he did shots were fired, missing his head by an inch. He landed with a thud on his feet beside me.
Daniel grabbed me, pulling me to the right as shots were fired at us and we ran. The tunnel we were in was now getting darker, I watched as he pulled out a headband placing it on his head and it lit up. The place was illuminated and I could make out that it was a sewer system.
"Where are we?" I whispered as we ran down the tunnel.
"We are in an abandoned tunnel that was built years ago. It is used as a sewer system just for this house, it empties with the other sewers though," he said as we took a left.
The shots echoed on the walls and so did the footsteps of the men running us down. My legs were killing me but I couldn't stop running, my life as well as Daniel's depended on it.
We ran until we came to a three-way, he pulled me to the third, and as we entered I could hear the sound of an engine. He ran down the tunnel then came to a stop at a ladder and he ushered me up it. I made my way up the ladder, pushing away the metal manhole above me then climbed out.
As I looked around, I saw that I was outside the walls of the house about a mile away and behind me, I could see a black Audi. I focused at the house for a while, I could make out sirens being rung, and I could see the lights flashing in the distance. As I stood looking at the house, Daniel came up, pulled up the ladder, and placed the manhole back in place.
"Shania, let's go," he said.
I was frozen to the spot.
He came up behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, turned me around, and kissed me briefly on my lips.
"Let's go." he says again softly.
I nodded and hopped into the back, he came in beside me. I looked in front of me to find a man with black hair at the steering wheel.
"Where is Rodriquez?" he asked in a deep voice.
"He didn't make it," replied Daniel as tears began to stream down my face again.
The man hit the steering wheel in anger before looking at us in the mirror, his grey eyes reflecting the moonlight.
"Okay let's go," he said as he gripped the wheel and sped off towards the city.
I rested my head on Daniel's shoulder softly crying as he rubbed circles on my back. I slowly started to drift off into the darkness. I tried to fight it but I couldn't.
"Sleep,Nia," he whispered in my ear and I slowly relaxed letting the darknesssurround me.
