Humble Beginnings
This, my friends, is a chapter that sends back in time to the beginning of the Gamers. Enjoy!
"Um....Jarod?" Lizzy asked as she stared at the glass window bearing the world.
"Yeah. What's up?" he replied as he took a glance at Lizzy from his book. She turned slightly to him with desperation in her oak-colored eyes and said,
"I've been meaning to ask you this but I always feel...um, fretful about it."
"Don't worry, little sis," Jarod replied with a smile that always made Lizzy feel warm on the inside. "Ask away."
"How did this group began?" Lizzy blurted out without hesitation. After she said that, she covered her mouth in fright like someone announcing a locked secret. The older sibling understood it well. Lizzy can be a little shy when it comes down to asking unnecessary questions. Jarod sighed and told her to get the Nintendo 64 out of his closet. She obeyed and quickly found it and delivered it to her brother. The old console was smothered in dust and the symbol of Nintendo was fasely imprinted.
"This is what started it all Lizzy," Jarod explained with a proud tone.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
"It was the first day of school," Jarod began, "Eight years ago, I was anxiously waiting for class to start while my other classmates talked amongst themselves about their summer vacation and what not. As class began, the teacher announced that we had a transfer student joining our class. I remember the teacher saying,
"Class, this is James Fury. Be nice and respectful to him as your new classmate."
My impression of James for the next couple weeks was that he was impatient and can be very independent. He wanted to be a skilled archer when he grew up, like Hawkeye. But it seemed very childish. Until one day at lunch on my way to get something from the classroom, I found him sitting in the hallway looking depressed. Being the friendly guy of the class, I asked what was wrong. But he wouldn't respond but just stare at me confusingly. Then I sat by James and wouldn't leave him alone for the rest of lunch. I began to do that everyday, like it was some kind of routine. After class I would go to where James went, sat down with him, ate lunch, and tried to spark up a conversation. After weeks of doing this, he warmed up to me and began talking. He explained that he came from abusive parents that toyed with him a lot. Until he ran away to go live with his uncle, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. He admired how I was able to be persistent and kind to others because he didn't know how to make friends. He also explained why he wanted to become an archer so much."
"Why?" Lizzy asked with earnest eyes.
"Because he wanted to be a hero, like Hawkeye," Jarod replied as he tried to find another book to read in his oak bookcase. "He always admired him because of his bravery and skills. So on his birthday, his uncle gave him a wooden now and arrows to help him get started. He practiced with it ever since. I believe he still has it, somewhere in a storage box."
"Ya'know you aren't telling me how it all began," his sister complained with crosses arms.
"Patience, Lizzy. It's coming soon. For the next two years, James and I became best friends and dependable of each other. We both liked to do similar things, especially playing Nintendo games. We'd go to each other's houses and had fun competing or co-opting with each other. Then it happened. It was July 6, two days after Independence Day. We were playing a round of Mario on the old 64 by taking turns. And then all of a sudden, Bowser literally jumped out of the game and took James as his prisoner. He cried for help, but what was I suppose to do.... At the time, I barely knew how to defend myself and others."
"Why did he take him, bro?"
"Because James was the only one that could open a portal in the clouds. As one of the Guardians of Earth, he had the power to travel through portals of light to go to different universes. But he didn't know it. As he was taken captive, I was accidentally sucked into the game as well. With the help of Mario and Luigi, I rescued James from evil and saved the galaxy. It was then when I realized my destiny to protect Earth."
"That's pretty cool," Lizzy admired.
"You know the rest of the story, do you?" Jarod asked, trying to make sure.
"Of course. You and James moved out here to California, where you met Jewel, Summer, and Bryan. Everybody became fast friends because of gaming and dependableness. You soon told them of what happened in the Mario game, but they didn't believe you until..."
"Dr. Rave decided to invade the universe!" James interrupted as he walked into Jarod's room. Everyone else came too, disturbing the sanity of the room. They were noisy about what happened that time or what was going on.
"Guys, be quiet!" Jarod yelled as loud as he could. They immediately silenced themselves.
"So who was Dr. Rave?" Marth asked confusingly.
"Dr. Rave was from our planet," Bryan explained to him and the ones that don't know. "He was designing a machine that can transport him and other people to other universal places. His plan was to conquer and annihilate. But we, the Gamers, stopped him when he stopped by the Avatar universe."
"That's where they meet me!" Keiza exclaimed loudly.
"Yup!" Jarod agreed with her. "At the time, she was a human robot."
"What?!" the three swordsmen gasped.
"I was a strong waterbender at a young age," Keiza exclaimed to the shocked swordsmen. "After I was kidnapped and brought to the Northern Water Tribe, the people tried to run chemical tests on me."
"How did they do that?" Ike asked.
"I don't know," James replied, shrugging his shoulders. "It's one of those things that I couldn't figure out."
"Anyway," Keiza started, "one of the experiments didn't work...and they had to put me in a big glass tube in order to keep me alive. My DNA and emotions were scattered in the tube, so I didn't feel anything. I became the human robot. I didn't care of my surroundings. All I could see was life passing by. But years later, Dr. Rave's assistants attacked the tribe and took me away to the Earth kingdom."
"That was where we found and rescued you," Summer added to the story.
"But how did you turn back to a human?" Lizzy asked Keiza. Jewel sighed loudly and spoke,
"James is a computer geek. Duh!"
"Jewel, please!" Summer scolded her. "Don't be hating an awesome talent."
"It's true that I fixed her and a computer geek," James confessed to them. "Afterwards, things got weird..."
"All right, let's not get into the romance now!" Marth complained. "Jarod, please continue!" Everyone grew silence because of the comment. Some of the group were in love, some detested it, and the others don't even know they're in someone's interests. It's just the way things go.
"Anywho," Jarod began, which broke the silence, "we all gained our powers the same way. When we walked through the Gate of Worlds, we got abilities that seemed impossible to get. After the war between Dr. Rave, we had full control of our gifts."
"What's Bryan's gift?" someone in the background asked. The group acted stumped, then to the confused Bryan. He doesn't even know his power. All he owns is jinx certain things to come and it actually happens. That's all they know.
"So what happened after the war?" Lizzy asked. The rest of the Gamers stated upon her surprisedly, unaware that Lizzy forgot.
"Well what do you think?" James announced to the girl. "You came along, of course!"
"Oh right!" Lizzy remembered, putting her right hand on top of her head. "How could I have forgotten?"
"Yeah!" Jarod agreed. "You were adopted into the family and fit right in like a puzzle piece. Although you had a forgotten past, you kept looking forward to find the future."
"Then it was the tournament," Keiza concluded in a happy tone. "You all know what happened there."
"Yes!" everyone exclaimed. "Don't go back there!"
"But we found out our destinies!" Summer objected with a huff.
"Some memories were good but some were bad," Marth pointed out.
"Yup," everyone agreed again. Lizzy sighed sadly and sat down on the carpet floor with her head upon the top of her knees. The memories of loneliness, discovery, and loss spiked into her head like needles.
"Is Lizzy all right?" Rondi asked while noting her actions after they mentioned the tournament. Everyone turned to her in concern but she smiled faintly.
"Are you remembering what Li told you about the Mages?" Link asked Lizzy with memory of the conversation. She nodded slowly with confidence that he'd know what she was so sad about.
"Aren't Mages wielders of magic?" Mr. L asked Lizzy.
"Yes," she answered. "We hold the power of the Light Spirits. Since the Twilight Era, they have given half of their power to the chosen people of each province of Hyrule."
"But Big Sister," Jewel objected, "you weren't born in the Faron Province. How were you chosen? And why?"
"....Because they wanted my magic vessel."
"What?!" Summer gasped in bewilderment. Lizzy remained placid and tried to explain the situation while everyone else had the same reaction.
"My people, the lost Lightria Kingdom, exceeded at wielding magic. When I was born, the nurse maids discovered that I had powerful magic. As I grew up, increments of magic grew as well. The council of Earth took note of this and agreed to place Faron's power inside of me, making me a Mage. But they never did it..."
"Then how did you become a Mage?!" Keiza exclaimed. Lizzy stopped talking, knowing that there might be a penalty of guilt in the one person that transformed her into a Mage. She wasn't sure if the Gamers were ready for the truth.
"...I'm guessing you aren't ready to tell us yet, huh?" Jarod finally concluded due to his sister's frightened gaze to the floor. "Don't worry about it."
"How about we talk about a different topic?" Rondi suggested to the quiet group. "Or..."
"Play the Xbox!" Mr. L interrupted loudly. "It's the only way to cheer these kids up."
"Sorry guys, I have plans," Jarod announced quickly to his friends. He stood up and began to walk out the door.
"What plans?" James and Ike asked curiously. Their leader halted at the door, turned around to face his audience, and motioned Shizuka to come with him. She quickly walked towards Jarod and took his hand. "Oh...."
"Anyway guys, I'm out! See ya!"
"Bye!" everyone exclaimed while waving their hands. When Jarod and Shizuka left the scene, Lizzy jumped to her feet and stretched her arms and legs. After that little stretch, she asked,
"What time is it?"
"It's only 5 o'clock," James replied after he got out his phone. "Why?"
"I think it is time for me to meditate for an hour or two," Lizzy answered on her way to the door. "Call me when you need me!" While she was walking away, Marth asked a simple question,
"Why is she meditating?"
"Because I feel like it!" she yelled from down the stairs. "Don't be hating, Marth!"
"She just does it for fun," Summer explained to a half-shocked Marth. "She says it's a nice way to get away from people and actually think of a situation."
"Dude, I've known her forever and I never seen her meditate!" Link complained with his arms crossed. "When did she start
"About year ago," Jewel replied plainly. "You weren't there."
"I finally have an idea!" Rondi announced as he stood in front of his friends proudly. "In about an hour or two, meet me downstairs in the main part of the house."
"Why?" Marth asked. Rondi stared at the prince with his cold-blooded eyes.
"You just love asking questions, don't you?" Rondi questioned Marth. "Why don't you just find out?"
"Now that that's settled," Link began, "what am I going to do for a whole hour or two?"
"I don't know," Mr. L answered. "Try checking on our meditating friend." Link nodded and hurried out of the room where Lizzy was. Just as expected, he found her sitting criss-crossed on the ground. She looked relaxed as he tried to approach her. However, he halted just mere inches away from her and crouched down. They sat there in silence for a few moments until Link spoke up.
"You could have told them," Link mentioned. "...I don't mind if you do." However, Lizzy didn't speak or turn to see her friend. She sat there in complete silence and in peace.
"In fact, you haven't spoken about it since I told you."
"....."
"All right. If you don't want to talk that's fine by me," Link said as he stood up from his position. He started to walk away but before he went out of the room, he grasped the door and spoke, "But I'm still waiting for it." He then shut the door quietly so that it wouldn't disturb Lizzy. She slowly opened her eyes in sadness and sighed.
"Of course I want to tell you," Lizzy said to herself. "But it's just that I haven't figured it out yet. I need....more...time." She held her head up in regret but placed her right hand firmly on her chest. "I promise to tell you...sooner or later!" Lizzy thought to herself. She looked all over her room and outside of the door. "And I hope nobody heard that!"
"Heard what?" somebody said in her mind in a mysterious tone.
"Link, get out of my mind!" Lizzy could instantly hear his laughter from downstairs. "I wish he could get out of my head," she moaned to herself. "Someone, help it!"
Well, that just got interesting....I wonder what Rondi meant when he had an idea.... You get to find out next chapter!!! See you then! :)
