Chapter 7. Shelter
I woke up after a while. I was...somewhere else. There was a purple couch. And I had a black blanket wrapped around me. I looked around me. There was a silver chandelier above me, a grand piano. And many other fancy lights and things.
I'm at a rich person's home. I'm not about to get adopted am I? A door from a distance opened up. I rubbed my eyes, still blurry. There was a really tall..man? Wearing a fancy tux..? Wait, is that even human!? The man had a clock as its head.
The clock hand ticked slowly.
"Salutations, I see you've woken up. How do you feel?"
The clock man bowed politely.
"I'm fine...but who are you..? What are you?"
I rubbed my head as I felt a nice bandage wrapping around my head.
"Oh how rude of me, I sincerely apologize. My name is Rewind, and I'm not quite sure what I am either."
Rewind introduced himself.
"And who might you be?"
Rewind asked me.
"I'm...I'm Game Master."
I replied.
"Game Master? That's a rather interesting name."
Rewind's clock hands ticked a bit slower.
"You could call me Game or GM if that's better.."
I mumbled.
"Oh Game Master is fine, but I'll call you those for short."
Rewind walked over to a mini fridge.
"What drinks do you like, Game?"
Rewind asked me politely.
"Just some juice is fine.."
I replied shyly.
"Alright"
Rewind slid back to me with an apple juice in hand.
"Does this suit your taste buds?"
Rewind asked like some kind of commercial guy.
I nodded as Rewind handed me the juice. I opened it and drank it slowly.
"My, my, I'm running behind schedule. I'll be back Game, I'll bring back food."
Rewind slid to the door and closed it gently.
I took some time to explore but I was only allowed in the room I was currently in..whenever I tried to grab a door it drains my energy for some reason. So for a while I just...did nothing.
But finally after what felt like hours, Rewind came back. And he got food! He placed a bowl in front of me.
"How was your stay while I was gone?"
Rewind asked his clock hands ticking faster.
"It was kinda boring, your doorknobs wouldn't let me touch them."
I admitted.
"I like your honesty Game, once you're older I'll help you achieve things you never have. Here we help all people in need."
Rewind ruffled my hair a bit as I giggled quietly.
I looked down at my bowl, the bowl was filled with what looked like some kind of raw meat of flesh... regardless I was hungry. I ate it and it was shockingly delicious. I started to wolf down on it.
"My, my! You sure are hungry!"
Rewind chuckled.
"Is there more?"
I asked innocently as I finished my bowl.
"Of course there's plenty where that came from, no one seems to like it but you."
Rewind's clock hands ticked slower as he walked over to a different room. He came back with the bowl refilled slowly.
I kept devouring bowls of the meat until I couldn't eat any more.
This is so much better than killing humans and eating them. And the best thing is it's not even human!
Tears of joy swelled up in my eyes a bit as I ate my last piece of meat happily.
"I'll keep you safe now."
Rewind patted me on the head.
"You promise?"
I asked hesitantly.
"Promise."
Rewind nodded.
———-———-———-———-———-———-———-——————-3 years later.———-———-———-———-———-———-———-———-———-———-
I've learned how to control Expurge better and Rewind is letting me go on something he calls missions. But I'd like to think of it as errands, so far it's been a normal chore like every kid does, washing the dishes, going shopping for groceries , cleaning the room. That kind of stuff.
I developed a disguise too, Rewind created a gadget for me, a cloaking device. I also found out Expurge can leave my body by taking half of my soul. But I could risk Expurge getting exposed to the world. I gave him the gadget instead of me. I just wore black gloves and anything that can cover my skin really. I stood in my alleyway where Rewind found me supposedly.
Expurge loomed over me with his glowing white beady eyes, swirling around.
"Expurge, put on your cloak! We don't need those weirdo scientists to find us again! We don't want locals to rat us out!"
I scowled at Expurge with annoyance.
Expurge has a habit of not putting on his cloak, which is actually quite annoying.
Expurge huffed then puts on the cloaking device.
"Better?"
Expurge asked, rolling his eyes.
"Much better."
I rolled my eyes back.
"Let's just go already."
Expurge sighed.
Honestly it was a little odd seeing Expurge's human form. I'm just not quite used to it. Expurge seems to get more moody in the form, I guess he just hates it.
"So rewind"
I walked deeper into the alleyway.
"Pft, you said rewind."
Expurge snickered.
"Yeah, yeah pun intended."
I crossed my arms.
"Anyways, we need to deliver mail to someone. Right?"
I asked finishing my sentence.
"Yep, pretty much it.
Expurge nodded.
"Man, I can't wait to finish this task! It's the final one before we learn Rewind's ways!"
I exclaimed but quieted down quickly in embarrassment.
Expurge chuckled as he took out the mail.
"The address should be somewhere around here."
Expurge looked around.
"Well what's the address?"
I sniffed, kinda missing my enhanced scent.
"Oh actually it's right there."
Expurge pointed at a simple White House, with a small garden in the front yard.
"They must be friendly. I wonder what they're growing."
I tried sniffing the plants but I forgot I wasn't Expurge Master anymore.
"You need to stop doing that."
Expurge sighed.
"You know I can't help it. I've gotten used to you being in my body. I keep forgetting I don't have your powers anymore."
I sighed heavily putting my hands in my hoodie.
"Let's just go."
Expurge yanked my hoodie and dragged me to the front door.
I quickly turned around and fixed my hoodie. Expurge knocked on the door roughly.
"Expurge you don't need to knock on the door that hard."
I grabbed Expurge's wrist to make him stop.
"It's not my fault. Human instincts."
Expurge shrugged.
"Expurge you aren't even human in the first place."
I pushed Expurge away a bit from the door.
"Right, right, sorry."
Expurge rolled his eyes sarcastically.
The door soon opened up. There stood a tall man wearing a white lab coat, they had a yellow oversized shirt underneath it labeled Burgers for all. His face was almost covered with their black hair.
"Hey."
He croaked.
Why does his voice sound so familiar?
The man's expression changed a bit to shock then back to normal.
"What do you want?"
The man coughed.
"A letter."
Expurge handed the letter to the man.
The man took it and opened it up. He mumbled a bit before coughing once more.
"Are you okay sir?"
I asked politely.
"Game Master is that you?"
Miracle's voice whispered.
I froze.
Expurge froze too.
"Miracle?"
I spoke out loud.
The man coughed once more.
"Game Master."
He wheezed.
"Oh my gosh Miracle- what happened to you!?"
I realized how bad Miracle looked the last time I saw him.
Miracle looked around before dragging me and Expurge inside.
"I think the H.U.S.H is tracking me.."
Miracle grabbed himself some black coffee.
"What's H.U.S.H?"
I asked.
"That's the facility we were in I assume."
Expurge blurted out.
"Your friend there is right. It stands for Helpful Undetected Safety Home."
Miracle nodded slowly.
"They've been experimenting on me, as a punishment for helping you."
Miracle added, sipped his black coffee.
"Like what?"
Expurge asked curiously yet carefully.
Miracle placed his coffee down and walked over to the kitchen cabinets.
He rummaged through some silver utensils, or that's what I heard. He then picked up a tiny box.
"This is what they've been testing me on..and it's taken a toll on me quite a bit."
Miracle set the box down and opened it. It revealed a violet serum.
"What is it?"
I picked it up.
"Sleepwalking serum."
Miracle replied tiredly.
"It allows the user to sleep like a sleeping dart but worse...whoever gets shot with this will be under the person's control until the person manages to wake up."
Miracle explained slowly.
"So you've been protecting it?"
I put the serum back in the box.
"Yes, but I kept getting tested until the serum was perfect..so I feel rather tired."
Miracle rested his head miserably on the wooden oak table.
"I might as well go insane."
Miracle jokes.
"We can protect it I'm sure."
I offered.
"I'm sure you will, but hanging around with Rewind is risky."
Miracle locked the box.
"Why is that?"
Expurge raised an eyebrow.
"Well you see...Rewind is a successful businessman, many popular people visit him for...very valuable items."
Miracle sighed then slammed his head on the table.
"Oof you okay-?"
I asked as a loud bang! Appeared.
Miracle raised his head up, his forehead was slightly bleeding.
"I'll be fine."
Miracle said tiredly unbothered by the blood dripping down his face.
"I'm sure Rewind will understand plus, Rewind is teaching us his ways after this."
I reassured Miracle.
Miracle froze. He stood up and picked up the box.
"Fine. But if this falls into the wrong hands, I swear I'll curse you for life until you get it back."
Miracle handed me the box.
"Please keep this safe."
Miracle rubbed his eyes again.
"I will."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
I crossed my heart, promising him.
"Good. Now go before it gets too suspicious."
Miracle yawned as he walked over to a rusty brown couch.
I walked out the door with Expurge, I glanced back to see Miracle plopping down on the couch.
"He'll be fine."
Expurge puts a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
I nodded, walking back to Rewind's base.
Expurge sighed and walked slowly as he glanced back at the house, then the sunset.
I looked behind me gazing at the sunset before looking back at what's in front of me.
"You promise?"
"I promise."
Honestly, I don't know how long I can keep that promise.
