Chapter 4. The test
The creature came back to me a week after that. This time I could see them better. So I sketched it out.
The creature was tall on two legs, it had claws, on its tail and on all fours. The tail claw was black and the rest was white. It's eyes turn white in the dark but out of the shadows it's black. Their fur was spiked and their horns were curved like ram horns. It's ears were long and sharp, and their mouth was covered with black ice. There was black bones? I guess they're bones, wrapped around their back, ears, and a bit on their tail.
They look terrifying. I ended up sketching two drawings of them to memorize them on all fours and twos. I don't know why I'm drawn to this creature.
I tried my best to hide it. I don't know what this creature will do if the security finds out. But I was hungry again... the food at the caffertire doesn't seem to satisfy my stomach anymore...I needed an...upgrade.
I roamed the halls a bit instead of lunch, apparently there's been fights. Fights with other kids, they had abilities. Like super powers... they're amazing! But I just make cards. What could I possibly do? I needed to find out more later...
I bumped into the Cookie Monster scientist, still a weirdo.
"Oh hello! You must be Card Maker!"
He smiled at me kindly.
Why are they all so nice to me!? I don't understand! I thought they sent me here to die!
I thought bitterly as I nodded silently.
"My name is Meme, I believe I have some tests I have to do with you soon."
Meme smiled brightly.
Weirdo. His name is Meme? No wonder why. But a test?! This could be a trap!
"I don't want to go."
I blurted out accidentally.
"Don't worry it's not painful."
Meme reassured me kindly.
Are they manipulating me with their kindness!? I cannot fall for this!
"Come let's actually go now."
Meme grabbed my hand and started to walk down the hallway. My fight or flight response kicked in, I bit Meme roughly, my teeth were almost as sharp enough to take a piece of skin. I ended up leaving a bite mark on his arm. I ran quickly to my room and locked the doors.
"No no no! Don't hurt them, they're just afraid. They're just children!"
I heard Meme shout at the other guards.
I scurried to the dark corner and curled up into a ball. I felt guilty for doing that to Meme, he did nothing wrong, he was just doing his job. I cried in the corner, guilt rising inside of me. Then I saw the door handle move.
"Oh no...please don't be security..."
I begged.
It was another scientist, they looked rather...scary. The man wore a gas mask and a lab coat over a dark green and black suit. He had brown poofy hair. He approached me slowly.
"Please..don't hurt me..."
I begged in fear.
"You won't be harmed. And I'll make sure of that."
He reassured me. The man sounded rather British, no wonder why he's scary, he's also fancy.
Meme then came to the room.
"I'm sorry.."
I apologized to Meme.
"It's okay, you were just afraid. And look, I'm fine!"
Meme rolled up his sleeves from his lab coat to show a bandaging of where my bite mark was.
"C'mon let's go Laff."
Meme gestured to the man in the gas mask to get up.
Laff nodded offering me a hand up. I grabbed his hand and stood up walking out of my room. We walked through the many endless hallways.

I heard the creature whisper.
I kept on walking not wanting the creature to be caught.
You need to stay quiet, this isn't the right time!

The creature whispers again.
Just listen to me- who knows what the fac-
"We're here."
Laff announced.
I looked at a creepy door, it had scratches, dried blood, black liquid, and other dull liquids on it. I don't have a good feeling about this..
Meme took out a keycard and swiped it, but it declined him. He'd try again, and again, and again...
Wow this is getting tiring, yet I found this pretty amusing. And I think Laff did too, I could hear him snickering quietly.
"Okay Meme give me the key."
Laff sighed.
"No nO nOoO I got it"
Meme swatted Laff away.
Laff crossed his arms.
I also imagined him rolling his eyes behind his gas mask but honestly I don't know!
Meme finally managed to swipe the key and opened the door.
"See. I've got it."
Meme played with the keys with his finger twirling it around smugly.
"We're behind schedule for like 5 minutes"
Laff jokes.
"Wha- we better get moving or we'll both be fired-"
Meme quickly brought me to the ominous room but I refused.
"I don't wanna!"
I used my strength to stay outside the door.
"You have to, I know you don't like it but just...give it a try."
That word echoed in my head.
"Give it a try"
Why does it sound so comforting..and familiar..?
I subconsciously walked inside the room, I panicked but the door was shut tight behind me.
I can't do anything about it...

I heard the creature again. I scurried to a light corner afraid of what it might do to me.
"Subject seems afraid of the dark."
I heard a scientist say.
afraid of the dark!? That's not true!
I scowled to myself silently.
Regardless of the false information I stayed in the light shivering in fear.
"Turn off all lights in chamber 76."
The scientist commanded.
Then the lights went off.
It's so dark.
Why are they doing this to me?
I don't want to be with that beast.
But...
I want to...
No...
I need to.
I stood up, and whistled a little tune. I made this tune when I was younger, when I had a friend at the foster home. But then they got adopted so I never saw them again. But that whistle saved me and them for the longest of time, it brought me comfort.
"Subject is whistling a strange tune, possibly from a movie or TV show."
Ha wait til I laugh at how wrong they were about everything.
I heard the whistling echo back to my ears.
The lights started to flicker, I could see the creature a bit. The long black clawed tail, its white spiky fur, and its black ice covered muzzle. And its beady eyes changed back to white and black, within each flick.
"Unknown anomaly has entered the room, release the black ink."
The scientist announced.
Then many footsteps could be heard, it sounded like they were all stressed or panicked. Then a giant ink fell in front of me. The ink slowly stretched out to my feet.
The creature's eyes reflected back from it. It was revealing itself, for all of them to see.
"We have to get them out, we don't know what that thing could do!"
I heard Meme shout.
"Meme calm down-"
I heard Laff trying to comfort Meme.
"You know we can't do that Meme, it was our job to get through all of the lists on the paper. And we might've made a breakthrough."
A scientist said to Meme.
"GET THEM OUT!"
Meme cried out.
"Meme-MEME!"
I heard a slap, I'm assuming Laff slapped some senses into Meme. Also pun intended.
"A-OW."
Meme yelped.
"Just look."
Laff tapped on the glass.
The creature then gazed down at me, it leaned down to my level.

I reached my hand to it, it let me touch its muzzle gently. Its black iced muzzle felt...tingly. I heard a music box playing. The same whistle I've made... it was like the humming version... the door suddenly opened behind me.
"Come on!"
Meme held the door open as he tried to catch his breath. I looked up and it was gone. Was I hallucinating the whole thing?
"You didn't see that?"
I asked quietly.
"You were touching nothing."
Laff answered for Meme.
"Come on let's just go, that's enough for...today!"
Meme wheezed.
"And you need rest too. I'll take care of the rest."
Laff took the door from Meme as he walked away slowly. I guess Meme isn't such a weirdo after all. I ran past Laff and hugged Meme.
"I'm sorry I bit you today."
I smiled.
Meme froze for a second
"It's alright kid."
Meme then hugged me back.
I then ran to Laff and hugged his legs. Laff seemed stunned for a moment before patting my head.
"You've done good, kid. You've done good."
I won't let you down. And that's a promise.
