Chapter 7: Daybreak
"You still can't find him?" I asked with a sigh. It was a bright and early Thursday morning. It had been three days since they began their search and quite frankly I was getting tired of it. I was getting bored.
"No luck, we've checked everywhere," James explained. He updates me on the search every day, as do Credence, Nathaniel, and Jasper.
"So doesn't that mean you're in charge?"
"Well..." He started before his grand moment of realisation. "Actually I am..."
"So... Am I free to go then?"
"I don't know, you'll have to wait until Pan gets back,"
"But you're in charge. So make the executive decision,"
"But I'm only temporarily in charge, there are certain decisions I can't make,"
"Well, temporarily in charge still means you're in charge... Its just three simple words James..."
"I know, but..."
"But nothing, there's no reason you can't..."
"I guess I could..." He said, contemplating his decision. All I needed him to say was three simple words, I needed him to tell me I could leave. My plan would've worked, the game would be over. "I guess you can leave,"
"See? That wasn't too hard," I said with a smile, "Now if you'll please follow me, I have a gift before I leave,"
I lead him to the tree in the middle of the woods and took the green scarf off the branch. "Since you've been so kind, I have something to return to you," I said as I gestured behind me. There was a rustling of the leaves behind me as my favourite person in the world, the one and only walked up to us.
"Heres your boss back," Felix said as he handed James a little jar with a few holes in the lid. "He was well-fed, you'll find everything you need to fix him at the camp thanks to this lovely lady," He said gesturing toward me as I took a little bow.
"Well played Red, well played," James said astonished at the plan that had unfolded before him. "But you're forgetting one little thing,"
"And what's that?" I asked
"We had a deal," He explained. "You promised to take me, as well as any of the other boys who wanted to go home, with you..."
"And you thought I wouldn't hold up my end of the offer?"
"Well, you haven't exactly been the most trustworthy considering,"
"I fully intend on holding up my end of the offer, as you had with yours,"
"I pick who stays and who goes,"
"Fair enough," I said "You may go and fetch them, we'll be here," He stepped away from us, retreating to the camp. We waited for about five minutes before we had begun having a conversation. "I told you I would be alright, but did you believe me?"
"If I'm being a hundred per cent honest, no. Cause you were kinda just stuck there with a broken ankle, in the pitch dark forest, with no food or water and your only protection was a rusty pocket knife," Felix said matter of factly
"But I was able to fend for myself and might I say, I succeeded..."
"You're right... Jaxton was a soul believer the whole time though,"
"I bet he was, Is he waiting over by the docks?"
"No, he's building a fire to make food with before we head out,"
"Alright, what a great older brother am I right?"
"He's not your brother," Felix said with a laugh.
"Well not yet anyway..."
