Chapter 3: The Door
I woke up with a jolt. Another nightmare. They had become more frequent the longer I've been at the camp, which had meant a lot of bad nights for me. I think about that night in the forest almost every night. How Felix had wanted to take me with him, to help me, and how he had warned me not to fall asleep.
I told him I would be alright. I told him he didn't need to take me with him. I told him I wouldn't fall asleep. Those were all lies. But it was for the better. Maybe he found Jaxton, and they were on their way to help me. Or maybe he didn't, and he wasn't coming back.
As I lie awake, frightened at my own imagination, I heard a few words in the darkness. Perhaps it was a conversation.
"But what about the girl?" A voice whispered in the darkness.
"What about her?" Another had asked
"She's probably cold..."
"And?"
"I don't know, I feel bad. Could we at least have given her a blanket?"
"The prisoners don't receive special treatment, Credence."
The talking had stopped almost as soon as it had started. Credence felt bad for me? Sure he gave my bracelet back, and my ponytail holder, and the crutches, but did Pan have to be convinced to let him do so? Did he even ask permission? The more I thought, the more awake I became. So much so that I stayed up till nearly sunrise before falling asleep again.
I was startled awake from the sound of the holding cell door being opened, per the usual. "Breakfast in twenty minutes," The boy who had opened it stated before walking back off.
The door. It was open. If this wasn't the clearest chance for my escape I didn't know what was. I grabbed my stuff from the floor of the cell as well as my crutches before heading to the door. Twenty minutes before anyone would come looking for me, I'd say I have a pretty good chance.
I steadied myself so I wouldn't fall over in the rooted forest around me. As I made my way through the trees I could smell a campfire, but it wasn't the same campfire smell I was used to. This one smelled safe, almost homey, like a summer night with friends. I was going in the right direction. The clock was ticking. Fifteen minutes left.
I hobbled as quick as I could, granted that wasn't quick at all, through the forest towards the fire. All of a sudden the fire disappeared. No light, no smell, nothing. I had lost my trail. I could tell from the sun that I was heading north, which sounded about right for where I had originally been going. Ten minutes.
To say I was scared I wouldn't make it was an understatement. I was terrified. What if I didn't make it? What if I came so close to where I needed to be, yet so far? I had to act quick. I had to keep moving forward. Five minutes to go. I was almost there.
I passed a few more trees. Four minutes.
I tied a red scarf around one of the trees, hoping to throw anyone off my tracks. Two minutes.
I looked for anywhere else to go before I heard a familiar voice. Felix. One minute left.
I tried to make my way to the voice, the comfort, my way out. It was too late.
"Nice try Red, better luck next time,"
