Chapter eight

"Say, Miyuki. Why are your hands so cold?"
Miyuki stopped where he was, hesitating at changing out my bandages.
"A-Ah, I'm sorry... I can't control it, I..."
I giggled a little. "What do you mean? It feels nice."
I smiled at him cheerfully. And I meant it; though the temperatures outside were low, his touch felt good against the sting of my wounds. The expression he made looked surprised by this. He must've been used to hearing that his chilled touch was unwanted... That made my chest tighten...
Miyuki... Don't make such a face.
I lightly reached out to him and took his hand in both of mine, quietly raising it to press to my cheek. So cool...
Miyuki...
Surely your heart isn't as cold as your hands.

Before I even knew it, I had been staying with him for two days. I hated to impose... Besides, I really needed to leave. Rione... I hoped he was alright...
And I had a mission that I needed to attend to. The spring festival... The kingdom... I knew the snow had surely only gotten worse... Whenever Miyuki went outside I could see it was deeper...
I knew that he only wanted to help me, and I was grateful, but I couldn't impose any longer. I needed to focus on the task at hand.
I needed to stop the snow.
Soon, night fell, and Miyuki changed my bandages again before bed. We were both silent.
I'd been here long enough to pick up on it... I took up the only bed in his cottage. Miyuki was never here at night. That meant while he was out... I could go.
When he was done, Miyuki gave me a gentle smile and turned out the lights. "Goodnight."

"Night."

And then he was gone. Of course I wondered where he went at night as much as the next guy, but I didn't have time to worry about it. I had to leave. I wished there was some way I could thank him for what he did for me... In the end, all I could do was give him a note thanking him again and an awkward drawing. Glad I wouldn't be here to see his face when he read it...
I still felt dizzy when I stood, but it was bearable. I had to get going.
Letting out a sigh, I pulled my hood over my head and headed out into the snow.
