62.
Arya ended the call for the fourth time. It has been five days since she came back yet still Jin was unreachable.
It has been her habit to call at his home. Two times the maids picked up the phone, the rest of the time- no one.
Calling in cellphone- well, they regularly change their numbers. So there was no way anyone can reach them unless they let them know the numbers.
Seems like she was put into the second list who doesn't have Jin's current number.
Arya sighed and got up.
She'll leave for Jeju next morning and hopefully report to The Pit by the afternoon.
It would be great if she could talk to Jin before she leaves.
He just went under the radar from the day they arrived.
Was he busy? Or just ignoring her?
Cutting the call, Arya called another number. She got it two days ago when she went to headquarter to resume her position and further orders.
"Hey, noona!" Hoseok's cheer came through the phone.
"Are you busy?"
"A little. Just office work. Why?"
"Buy me dinner," Arya smiled.
"8:30. I'll send you the address." Hoseok smiled too, "You better show up."
"See you." Arya cut the call.
She should get moving. She didn't have many things to pack, but she started packing anyway.
Namjoon said The Pit was different. God knows how different would it be!
The whole time she was busy, her eyes subconsciously went back to her phone now and then.
Jin, where the hell are you?
Arya checked the address for the second time. She was in front of a restaurant Hoseok send the address to her. Before she could call Hoseok, a hand hit the back of her head.
"Hey!" Arya protested seeing a beaming Hoseok behind her and rubbed the place that just has been attacked.
Hoseok wrapped one hand around her shoulder and smiled, "Let's go inside."
"God! I am hungry!" Arya almost whined and threw her elbow to Hoseok's side making him squeal and giggle.
He was always this ticklish.
"Sorry, I won't hit you again!" He retorted back hurriedly.
"Let's go!"
They both got inside.
Hoseok nodded and smiled towards the girl at the counter and added,
"Everything good, Noona?"
"I am good, Hoseok-sshi." The girl gave him a thumbs up and indicated him towards a corner, "the usual place for you."
"Thank you." Hoseok bowed and lead Arya to a corner.
Arya looked around after they were both seated.
It was a cozy small restaurant in the heart of Itaewon.
So the crowd in this small vanity wasn't small.
The restaurant was quite busy but at the same time, homely.
"What do you want?" Hoseok placed the menu in front of her, "everything they make is good."
Arya eyed the menu and commented, "you seem to be familiar with this place."
"I come here often. Nabi loves the food."
"Nabi?" Arya raised a brow at him.
Hoseok smiled sheepishly, "Yes, Nabi."
"And who is that person supposed to be? Do I know her?" Arya was still eyeing him teasingly.
"You don't. But she sure does know you considering how much I badmouthed you to her." Hoseok laughed.
Arya threw a kick below the table and Hoseok grabbed his knee and protested, "ya! It hurts!"
"Why didn't I know her before?"
"How would you? You just came back here out of the blue one day deciding that you had enough of playing dead!" Hoseok said defensively.
"You got a point there." Arya laughed.
Arya again looked at him after they both placed the order, "So, tell me about her."
"You'll meet her. See her yourself, then." Hoseok shrugged a little.
"How?"
"She is a trainer in The Pit." Hoseok smiled, "Be prepared. She'll surely put you in for some tests."
Arya laughed, "Give me some tips then. How can I be on her good page?"
"That's cheating."
"Come on!" Arya whined, "look at me. I am already exhausted from being trained inhumanly. Jin is surely a heartless bastard."
"She will be your tactics instructor there. Believe me when I say, she is a tough girl."
"Even tough with you? I don't think so." Arya teased him, "tell me, when did it happen?"
"Three years." Hoseok snickered, "I work as the combat instructor in The Pit. Honourary post as a guest instructor. So yeah..." he was a little embarrassed.
"Relationship with a co-worker?" Arya sneered, "where is the work ethic, my dear Hobi?"
"Screw this work ethic!" Hoseok rolled his eyes, "who was this dumb enough to make these laws thinking people will obey them?"
"Noted." Arya chuckled, "now tell me, how is she? Don't scrap this question this time. I need to know if my best friend is in the hand of the right person."
"She is a delightful person." Hoseok was flustered, "she makes me happy."
"That is all that matters." Arya nodded, "I am happy for you."
She sighed the next moment, "And here I was thinking you've become a monk in absence of me in sorrow and heartbreak. Poor Arya! Don't trust men anymore,"
Hoseok cackled, "Why? I never had a chance with you!"
"And I thought you liked me!" Arya frowned, "pathetic!"
Hoseok laughed again, "Wow! You are not dense like I thought!"
"Dense! Your ass!" Arya tossed another kick.
Hoseok readily evaded it and grinned, "Obviously you are dense! Do you have any idea who likes you or not? You'd still be clueless if someone affirms in front of you that they like you."
"Hey! How stupid do you think I am?" Arya protested, "Girls have radar, you know? How do you think I know that you liked me back then?"
"That is a miracle." Hoseok rolled his eyes, "on another note, why didn't you tell me anything then if you already knew?"
"Why didn't you?" Arya counter attacked.
And after a second of silence, they both burst into laughter.
"Ya, Arya!" Hoseok tried to stop his laughter, "we both were so stupid back then! Admit it."
"Agreed." Arya wiped her eyes and laughed, "but you idiot, do you know, I was so eager to get a confession from you and you never gathered the courage to do so!"
"Really? You did?" Hoseok marveled at the remark.
They picked up the chopsticks after the waiter placed their meal on the table.
"Yes, I was 100% sure that I'll accept you." Arya rolled her eyes, "And now you forgot me and threw me aside! I am heartbroken, boy! I thought I still have a chance!"
"Nope! I am a happy man with my little butterfly!" Hoseok smiled warmly, "don't try to steal her man, you have your own man in your palm."
"I have?" Arya frowned.
Hoseok eyed her disappointedly,
"Seriously, Arya?"
"What?"
"Nothing. Just the fact that you are the dumbest and most dense person I have ever seen in my life!"
"Ya!" Arya protested.
Hoseok shoved a piece of meat in her mouth, "eat it and shut up. You are embarrassing me with your dumb mouth."
"Careful!" Arya squinted, "Who are you talking about? Have you ever encountered a genius like me? I can ruin your whole life with just a few taps of my keyboard!"
"Yeah, totally forgot about the big mouth." Hoseok sighed, "You are all about just talk. Nothing more."
"Should I demonstrate?" Arya warned him.
"You know I have the strongest allies behind my back?" Hoseok smiled,
"They will dig you out of your grave even if you decide to hide there."
"So where are your allies now?"
Arya asked curiously.
"Seokjin hyung is still in the town, so does Namjoon and Taehyung. Yoongi hyung is in The Pit, Jimin at his naval intelligence. The last word from him was as he was working on a special project as an engineer. And there is Jungkook, writing tons of reports in the headquarter. Being the top costs you shit, you know."
"You talk with Jin?" Arya asked curiously.
"I didn't for the last few days."
"I thought you know where he is now."
"You don't?" Hoseok eyed her suspiciously.
"No, he just vanished after we stepped in Korea. Not picking up my calls either."
Hoseok was frowning now and suddenly he smiled, "that is no big deal. You know he isn't a social person and this kind of attitude is normal for him. You should get used to it already."
"I know. But it still feels weird." Arya said absentmindedly.
"Don't think too much. You seem tensed."
Arya sighed and smiled, "let me just get his hold for once, I will kill him. How dare he ignore me?"
"Arya." Suddenly Hoseok called Arya and she looked at him with confusion,
"What?"
"You two are very good friends, right?"
"From my side. From his side I was his arch-enemy, you know that."
"Dense." Hoseok again sighed in disappointment.
"What is so dense about it?"
"Dense that you never realized that not his enemy, you were possibly his only friend."
"How? You guys are there."
"Come on! We happened afterward. I am saying you were his only friend all this time."
"And who the hell ignores his friend? The legendary Kim seokjin? You know what? If it were you, I'd beat the crap out of you. Just because it is Jin, I am still keeping my rage together."
"Can I ask you something personal?"
"What?"
"Nevermind." Hoseok shrugged a little letting it slide.
"Spill. Or I am gonna spill this whole bottle of soju on you." Arya warned picking up a Soju bottle.
"Why you never liked Seokjin hyung?"
"Jin?" Arya frowned, "Like?"
"Don't tell me your dense brain is thinking that I was saying 'like' as if just 'like'. I meant 'like' like."
"That is a lot of 'like'," Arya commented.
"You got the gist." Hoseok was invested in his sprite, "didn't you ever like him?"
"Why would I?" Arya frowned.
"That being said," Hoseok scrunched his nose, "Or do you like women?"
"You are begging for the beating." Arya rolled her eyes, "why would I like women?"
"I don't know." Hoseok shrugged and scoffed, "You really do make me confused sometimes. If you don't like women, why wouldn't you like Seokjin hyung?"
"I don't see it has anything to do with liking women!"
"Well, every woman with a sane mind and straight interests will swoon over that man. I mean did you see him?"
"Looks like I have to doubt about your sexuality now considering how much swooned you are over Jin!" Arya cackled.
"You are giving some ambiguous answers."
"Perhaps I don't like the topic?'
Arya sighed.
"Sorry." Hoseok again beamed, "I'll drop it."
Recollecting something abruptly, Arya again looked at Hoseok, "By the way, Hobi, defend yourself or I am going to punch your nose down now."
"About what?" Hoseok was perplexed.
"Do you remember our last mission in the academy?"
Hoseok seemed to be emersed in thoughts and slowly acknowledgment flushed over his face, "yes, the one in which you guys got caught right before the finishing point?" Hoseok laughed, "How could I ever forget your face? You were almost throwing hands at Seokjin hyung!"
"Yes, that one. You remember the night before?"
"Yes. Why?"
"Don't you think you owe me an apology, you prick? Or should I tell Nabi about it?" Arya teased.
"Tell Nabi about what? How I slept through the night and ditched the Patrol while Seokjin hyung had to get an earful from the battalion commander for me?"
"You slept?" Arya frowned.
"Yes." Hoseok smiled, "Two Tylenol from the med tent for ankle sprain with one anti-allergen for the seasonal flu in the middle of the mission was enough to put you in a death-like sleep."
"You sure you were not in the round? Or not in the place for scouting around?" Arya was confused.
"Why would I lie?" Hoseok frowned again, "I certainly remember cause when they all partied after the success on the mission, I was alone in the training ground, getting punishment from Soojin sunbaenim for ditching the night patrol according to the roaster."
"Ya! Then WHO THE HELL DID KISS ME that night?" Arya flared up in fury realizing all these years she was that wrong thinking it was Hoseok.
"What?" Hoseok cracked instantly,
"Someone kissed you? Was he out of his mind? Who'd like you?"
"That motherfucker stole my first kiss!" Arya thumped down her chopstick on the table, "And for your kind information, EVERYONE LIKED ME!"
"As if!" Hoseok again laughed, "Then why the hell are you still single?"
"Ya! That is just rude!" Arya slapped his hand on the table, "I am an eligible bachelor."
The quiet corner of the restaurant was filled with laughter the rest of the time they stayed there, catching up with one another after a very long time.
Arya ended up talking with Nabi over the phone, got some advice from Hoseok to survive in The Pit, and finished their dinner.
"Hobi, can I ask you something?"
"What?"
"Do you have any idea where can I find Jin? Give me his contact number. Or tell me where can I find him, face to face. I need to meet him before I leave for The Pit."
Hoseok had a glance over his watch and smiled, "It is your lucky day. I know where he is, but I can spill on one condition."
"What is that?"
Hoseok smiled mischievously, "Tell me why you always put Seokjin hyung on friendzone. You could have given him chance if you wanted, you know!"
"Cause I had my eyes for the wrong person I guess." Arya glared at him,
"Turned out he was a coward."
"You never had your eyes for me, Arya." Hoseok said quietly, "yes, maybe you thought you did. But if you really liked me that way back then, you wouldn't just wait for me to approach. I know you this much."
Arya rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"So what is the reason?" Hoseok coaxed.
"I don't know." surprisingly Arya's voice turned low and slow, "I never thought I deserve him, maybe?"
Hoseok looked at her intently, "What do you mean?"
"Look at me, Hobi." Arya looked away, "I am always this mess. A hot-tempered, insensitive, self-centered narcissist with a bragging mouth where Jin is gentle, polite, sensitive, and strong. He is something anyone can just dream to become. We don't match, Hobi. It won't work out. We'd get tired and annoyed with each other if we get together eventually because of the lack of similarities. We are just like the Yin and Yang, a total opposite."
"And Yin and Yang together make a wonderful picture," Hoseok added quietly.
"He deserves better, Hobi. Someone who would make him comfortable. Not me who makes him despised every second I am around. Someone better than me. I am not his type."
"Am I hearing this right, noona?" Hoseok frowned a little, "I never have seen you this insecure over such mere things. You have always treated your life as if the world was your playground. Since when did you start caring about these things? It is so not you!"
"Whatever. Summary: he deserves better and I am in no position to be his type. So, you got your answer." Arya dismissed Hoseok.
"Is Seokjin Hyung your type?" Hoseok eyed Arya.
"Probably, or probably not. Who knows? Never really thought about that." Arya smiled, "look, I was always aware that I am not his cup of tea, so I never made my thoughts go in that direction either. So case dismissed."
"Dumb." Hoseok sipped on his sprite.
"I know myself and my reasons..." Arya started but Hoseok beat her with his attack,
"You know my ass."
"Ya Jung Hoseok! What is it with you today, continuously scolding me?" Arya frowned, "Ok, dinner is on me. I know you are pissed cause I am milking your money away. Stingy!"
"Be my guest!" Hoseok smiled.
"Shameless!" Arya rolled her eyes and placed her card on the table for the waiter.
"Now are you gonna give me his number or his whereabouts or not?"
Hoseok brought out his wallet and put another card in front of of of Arya.
Arya picked it and frowned. It was the membership card in the aviators' club.
"Use it. They'll let you in. I'll talk with them in advance to let you in as my guest. You'll find him here if you go now."
"Shouldn't you call him to be sure if he is really in there?" Arya reminded him.
"I don't need to." Hoseok shrugged, "I went there yesterday. He was there. And he went there without missing a single day for last week I heard. If you are lucky, he'll be there today too. At his usual table."
"Usual table?" Arya tried to remember where did she hear this before, "didn't Taehyung say it when we met at Jin's place when Jin went out to go somewhere?"
"Yes."
"What is he doing there?" Arya sighed and shoved the card inside her pocket and smiled, "Anyway, thanks."
Hoseok picked Arya's phone and entered a number and gave it back,
"And this is his new contact number. And noona?"
"Stop calling me noona." Arya smacked his hand on the table, "It makes me feel old. Especially when it comes from you."
"Well, YOU ARE OLD!"
"And you fell for this old machine!" Arya snapped an immediate come back and smirked, "Anyway, what were you saying?"
"Best of luck."
"For what?"
"For whatever you are going to be needing it for."
Arya smiled at Hoseok's sight,
"Thanks."
