Chapter Two: The Cold War

The sound of the wind howling creaked through the windows of the house. The cold floors. The fire flickering downstairs keeping everyone warm inside. The picture of their old friend Pops was hanging on the wall. The image was glowing by the light of the fireplace.
All the rooms in the house were quiet. Even the baby boy, Azzie was asleep in the same room that he shared with his aunt. Sarah was the only soul awake throughout the house. She just couldn't sleep. She worried about her sister, her brother-in-law, her mother, and her father. Ever since she found her nephew out in the snow, alive, she couldn't stop thinking about them.
The day she found Azzie, was a cold day. The snow blowing like it always did every day. None stop since the day it came. Since it was the beginning of the month. Then, that's when she heard a baby's cry. She went running and found a baby wrapped in a blanket in a basket. Alive. She instantly recognized the baby as her nephew. She then notices by the corner of her eye, a pack of wolves. They didn't charge at her, as if they were just watching. Then they turned and left. Wait, they acted like, they know that her nephew and she were related. Sarah looked at Azzie seeing he was just red in the cheeks and nose. Did these wolves take care of him? They must've. She picked up Azzie and carried him inside the house. Thanking her God for her nephew's safety. Remembering that, Sarah was reminded of what could have happened to the rest of their family.
Sarah got up from her bed and went downstairs holding her candlelight. Once inside the living room, she almost jumped hearing a voice in the room.
"Can't sleep?" It was Skips. The white gorilla was sitting on the couch having some tea.
  "N-no, I can't, Skips," Sarah stuttered.
  "Did I startled you, kid?"
"A little. I just didn't expect anyone down here."
"Sorry about that. Want some tea? It may help." Skips offered the brunette.
"Thanks, I would love some," Sarah replied and sat next to Skips. She and Skips' relationship was very close. They were close like a father and daughter. Since they met, Skips helped her with her powers. She was afraid to tell her parents of her job as a superhero, but he gave her advice that they needed to know. Otherwise, they will find out eventually.
"So what's troublin' ya?" Skips asked.
"...my family, my nephew...and this whole strange weather," Sarah answered.
"I understand. You worry about the people you love and care for."
  "Yeah...I know you would...since about...Mona..."
Skips remained silent once he heard that name. He didn't share a tear even though he wanted to. Mona was his girlfriend. A woman he fell for back in the 1800s and she was the reason he became immortal. And how he became "Skips".

"I'm sorry, Skips, I said her name again..."
  "It's alright, kid." Skips replied.
"Is there a way to bring her back? I mean, Mordecai and I brought Rigby back, but how we just went back through time to when the problem started."
"That's just the thing, I don't think I can bring her back from when she was alive to where we are now. It will change everything. I may never be Skips, and I may never become immortal. It was all because of the love of my life that I became what I am today."
Sarah nodded, remembering his story about Mona. She may be human-like Sarah, but Skips didn't care for he loved her more than his own life. Sarah just couldn't believe that Mona could be long gone. She had faith she was. Maybe yes she was gone after Klorgbane tried to kill Skips, but instead, he killed Mona after she saved him, maybe someone brought her back to life...like some Wizard or something. Besides, everything was weird around the park since the beginning of time.
"Skips, I know I have heard of it many times, but could you tell me how this storm started?" Sarah asked.
"The Cold War?" Skips asked, and Sarah nodded. "Alright...the year was this year, on this very month, the beginning of August. Our leader of our country passed away for he was sick due to one of the deadly diseases we had around the world for almost ten years. The Japanese came to attack us for they had a new weapon. They called it, the Snow Machine. Smaller ones worked like a flame thrower which they use to freeze their enemies. Once the leader of Japan, Shogo Tucker, activated the Snow Machine. That's when it created a snowstorm. It never stopped. To this very day, the snowstorm continues. Many people lost their lives due to the frigid temperatures of the cold bizarre weather in the summer. But I know this storm will not last, I hear Him telling me it will end. Just like the flood from Noah's story. At least, we can dig a tunnel from the house to up the surface, since then Dr. Animo created a heat ray for it would be a lot easier."
"You said the storm will end soon? How long? It's been a month?" Sarah asked.
"Ten more days." Skips replied, "He told me. This will end just like how the story of Noah's ark and the flood was. It lasted forty days and forty nights." Skips replied as he reached the coffee table and held his heart shape locket that had the picture of him and Mona inside. "If only Mona was still here. I could ask the others to make her immortal with me."
Sarah looked at Skips feeling bad for him. She felt his pain, for she lost a family member, but not someone she feels for. Animo was her first lover. Then came Arthur all because she was confused. Pops was there to support her when was in two relationships. Even Skips.
Then she snapped back to reality by hearing Skips' voice, "It's getting late, it's probably time you get some sleep, kiddo."
He was right. It was 2:45 in the morning. Sarah nodded and set her half drank teacup on the coffee table. "Thanks, Skips."
  "Of course, kiddo," Skips smiled.
  "Goodnight."
  "Goodnight...love ya."
  "You too," Sarah smiled back.
Skips watched her walk up the staircase to her room. Once she was out of his sight he looked down. He was looking at the locket smiling at Mona. He then ran his finger on her face thinking about her, the days they spent together.
"You have never forgotten about me?" Skips looked up at the sound of the voice came from and saw it was her.
Skips smiled softly.
  "Never."
"Same here, Skips," Mona smiled softly, "but.., I never stopped loving you, either. I want to tell you that...ever since that night...I...I never left you."
Skips looked up into her eyes, "I know, Mona. That's why I became the man I am now..."
