I never meant to keep these feelings to myself. I never meant for my best friend to ask out my crush before me. I never meant to become the go-between when an argument becomes a all-out brawl. I never meant for any of this stuff to happen.

But it still did.

I no longer wanted to sit back and watch this relationship go down in flames anymore. I was done with struggling to be the best friend and the secret lover. I had to do something, but what?

I decided to start with a little letter to get the truth out. It was the perfect idea. She would see it fall out his locker and pick it up. She would see the red lipstick stain and give her boyfriend an incredulous look. She would rip it open and read the letter with wide eyes. She would see him as the cheating jerk he really is. Then, she would break up with him and then I would be there for her. And we would still be the best of friends and always happy with each other as he watches us from the shadows.

But she was sick that day. And I paid for my mistake by being shoved in the janitor's closet and 'taught a lesson' by her beloved boyfriend.

I was so sick and tired of being his 'good little boy' that I started fighting back. It was little things at first, but it was enough to get her attention and enough to get him to harshly retaliate in the janitor's closet. I would not back down, though. Not this time.

"Connor?" A voice shakes me out of my thoughts.

I turn back to see my cousin.

She smiles and her braces reflect the light from the cheep bulbs in the high school hallway.

"Hi, Faith." I shoot her a small smile before walking at a slower pace for her. Her book bag weighs her down, so she never walks very fast unlike me.

"Good morning, Cuz." She slightly slurs the words due to her braces. "You're coming to the Fall Festival this weekend, right?"

My smile slightly grows at her question. The Fall Festival was something Tris was looking forward to as well. "I will and so will Tris." I say in my usually low and soft voice.

"Awesome!" She cheers in her geeky way which receives a few glances from nearby teachers. She blushes at her outburst and gives me an embarrassed smile. "I'll see you this Saturday then." She turns into her classroom and I keep walking till I reach mine after giving her a friendly nod.

The rest of the day runs by fast. Luckily, I manage to avoid Devlin. I sigh as I crank my car and leave the high school hell behind me. The cold air makes me shiver as I exit the vehicle and open the door to my freezing little cabin. I look slightly up to see my Mother with her arms crossed. "What are you doing? Get your *ss back out there and feed the animals."

I turn straight back into the cold. "Yes ma'am." I walk off into my depressing backyard. The chores I do seem to blur by until I rest my head on the soft pillow of my couch. Saturday better come soon.

Wow. Just wow. I think this is the best Preface I have ever written. Mannnnnn, I'm just vibing to this. My stress levels are so low now.
