Salty Dog
Dogs. Cute, funny, childish, but loyal and sweet. The best.
Salt? Essential. But in a limit. No salt's a mess, excess salt is more of a mess. Else we don't notice it.
Well the "self time" proved to be a bummer for Love, she sighed thinking about it as she walked back from the morning jog to her apartment through the block of houses. The car's were in the driveways, just like they're supposed to be, the garbage was all too well to do, what was going on in the area. Perfection fitting perfectly to a T. How can things be so good without supervision, and if it is being supervise then who's supervising it? Love thought.
As she lowered the volume of the music, she noticed a the screeching noise of a cat. It was between the little alley, and sounded like it was being troubled by a man. Love took a defensive position as she increased minorly in the direction. And as she entered the alley, something crossed her eyes in a blink making the girl who kicks asses shiver in reflex. She looked up to see the cat on the roof of the house, as she looked back at Love.
"Hush," the man, rather old man said with a jerk to his hand, in an attempt to make the cat run away. But the cat wasn't anything normal, she stood where she was as she looked at the helpless old man with a certain expression of victory.
"What are you looking at?" The old man yelled at Love as she stood in the alley watching him jerk his hands.
"I'd better get going," Love said as she turned around, hopping the earphones back in her ears.
Just like any other morning, she unlocked the huge wooden door, made herself breakfast and coffee before jumping in the shower. After the relaxing meal, she blow dried her hair, and wore a simple white and red track pant suit for the day at home. As she prepared to sit on the couch, under the smooth woolen blanket over the soft cushions with the month's Lonely Planet issue, the door bell rang.
"Hey sister," Kayla said as she smiled her way in the apartment while Love frowned at her.
"What is it?" Love asked.
"Oh, I see you're dressed quite well," Kayla commented.
"It's my day off," she said embarrassed by her home attire.
"We have no day offs," Kayla reminded her.
"Well I didn't have a case, at least yet," Love sighed at the last word.
Kayla smiled sarcastically as she picked up the Nutella jar and a spoon, and handed the I-pad to her sister.
"What's this?" she asked.
"We need to check it out," Kayla said as she satisfied her craving.
Taking the jar from Kayla's hand Love spooned herself as well, and she dwelled in the rich flavor.
"Hm, I've seen him," Love said as she recognized the man on the right from the picture. It was the old man she saw this morning.
Removing her attention from the jar, Kayla looked at the picture again.
"He's our new case," she said.
"What's wrong with him?" Love asked.
"Devil's got a sweet suit," Kayla said flirtatiously.
As Kayla pulled up across the street from the cooperate offices, Love wondered what the old man has to do with all this.
"There he is," Kayla said as she pointed at a man across the street.
Love tried to spot the man, but couldn't find him in the bunch of well suited, professional people there. She looked back at Kayla who focused on someone in the crowd.
"I don't see him," she said.
"Right there," Kayla said pointing in the direction of a man who'd probably be in his thirties.
"I don't understand," Love said as she looked back at Kayla.
But before Kayla could pay attention to her, she moved out of the car. Love followed her lead, as she ran across the street and entered the building the man had stepped in a few seconds before. Kayla saw the man leave in an elevator. The two next entered the same elevator and pressed the button Kayla's source had sent her. But before they could be half way up, the elevator stopped, the lights went off for a minute, but the elevator didn't move.
"What the hell?" Love said as she tried to look around.
"Welcome to my hell, girls." The cameras in the elevator were the culprit here.
"Sorry?" Kayla said trying to act innocent.
"Oh I know you two have been getting information on me, so let's not pretend."
"Wow trusted source Kai," Love commented.
Love rolled he eyes before looking into the camera.
"Alright, so tell me what are you looking for?" The husky voice asked.
"The truth," Love said.
"Sure sweetheart, here I'll give it to you," he said, and then the lights in the elevator went off.
"How was that? Satisfied?" The man asked as he switched the lights back on. But to his surprise the elevator was empty now. The door was still closed, but the girls were no were to be found. Before he could realize what had happened, he felt a cold metal device on his head, and as he turned around, he saw the taller one holding a gun at him. While Love kept him rooted to his seat, Kayla searched the room, and the drawers. Looking into his eyes, while he looked up to find Love's dark browns, she saw the truth in his eyes. His thoughts were filled with the papers Kayla was trying to find.
"What's on them?" Love asked still glaring at him.
"Sorry?" The guy named Roger rolled his eyes.
"The papers," Love eyed him, "What's on them?"
"It's the..."
"What?" Love said as she raised her pitch at him drilling the gun further on his forehead.
"Alright, alright..." Roger said in desperation. "They are the papers to the land on the outskirts for a shopping center.
"Illegal?" Love asked to which Roger nodded.
"Where are they?" Kayla asked as she had been listening to the whole conversation while searching his office space.
"I can't..." Roger said.
"You can't?" Kayla flirted.
Love looked at the pictures on his desk. One of them was of a lovely girl probably his wife or girlfriend, and the other of his parents with him.
"Come on Kai," Love said as she moved back still pointing the gun at Roger. He kept his hands in the air until Love closed the door on him.
"Where are we going?" Kayla asked as they rushed down the building into their car and Love pressed on the accelerator.
"I know where the papers are," she said.
"Right," Kayla said as she realized Love had powers like she had.
They broke into the old house among the street of new ones, which seemed empty at the moment. Searching the place, they tried to sound low, and kept away from the windows. But when no package was found, Love found the place she had to look for. She went to the back door, and opened it to search something that interested her in the small pavement. But finding none she turned back. Noticing the deformed structure of the door she looked with suspicion at it. She tried to move the thin side of the key between the wooden joint on the door trying to split the door's lower end in two.
"What do you think you are doing there?" Love heard the voice she had met in the morning.
Looking behind her, she saw the owner of the house standing behind her with an old shooting gun in his hand. Rolling her eyes at her foolishness of being caught in the act, she rose from her sitting position, the key still in her hand.
And the very moment Love looked at the man again, she saw Kayla standing right behind him, holding the Z compound in her hand.
"He's an old man, with a big heart," Love sang signaling Kayla that the compound couldn't be used on older humans.
The man and Kayla who stood with the compound in her hand behind him, looked at Love with awkward expressions on his face.
"It is a song," Love smiled at them.
Kayla was now about to inject the compound in him and as Love saw her, she sang again. After a minutes silence, Kayla realized what she meant, and before the old man could press the trigger of the gun, she pressed her index and middle finger onto his neck, and before he could turn around to face her, he fell unconscious on Kayla. Love stood rooted to the spot not able to quite gather what had happened.
"A little help, will be...appreciated," Kayla said struggling with the heavy man on her.
The two of them placed him on the couch, and after insuring he had a pumping nerve, Love moved back to the door to fetch the papers of the land that was being sold illegally in the country side.
Kayla couldn't be more thankful of Love to help her with the case, as the address of is childhood home wasn't mentioned anywhere in the government documents along his name. The papers were burnt, the call to the secret service was made, the deal was completed, and the case was solved. Kayla's friend was in the police. He knw a little about what Kayla did, and he couldn't think of a better person to ask help on this case. The land was being sold to a big mafia illegally and even thought they knew about it, they weren't able to do much. And they didn't. They asked someone to. And that someone was exceptionally good. Now he owed her a favor.
"How'd you know where to find these?" Kayla said as they sat on the kitchen top, scooping ice creams for themselves in the little light that came through the window.
"I saw the picture of his old man on his desk." Love said spooning her mouth with the chocolate ice cream.
"And the address?"
"Call it coincidence, but I saw the man this morning, thanks to the cat," she said.
"Cat?"
"Cat." Love said as she raised her hand like a champagne glass and asked Kayla to cheer the ice cream spoons.
