Part Thirty Two: Happiness Isn't Far
A/N: I think I'm going to end this story soon because HOLY COW WRITER'S BLOCK AND NOBODY IS EVEN READING THIS BOOK ANYMORE! Oh well, I really enjoyed this story so I'll try my best to keep it going for as long as I can. Sorry about being boring so I'll just get back to the story, I hope you have a good rest of your day~!
Azmend slowly opened his eyes and was met with Elena's face. Had he caught her watching him sleep? "A-Ah! I'm so sorry! Don't you normally turn back into a dragon when you sleep?" she managed to stutter. Azmend calmly sat up, "I didn't want to scare you."
She nodded, "I literally own a dragon...thanks though!" Elena sure was happy, after all she had been through too, it was hard to understand for Azmend. "Why do you want to find Cole? The real reason. You know he'll be fine, he's a dragon after all." he inquired.
"Well, you're right, I know he'll be fine but I just want to make sure. I want to bring him back to where he belongs safely." she answered. "Hmm...why?" Azmend continued, "Why would you want that?" Elena smiled, "I want him to be safe before I go, I want to see him one more time!" Azmend was utterly confused. "G-Go?" he repeated.
Elena stared at her feet and gave off a sorrowful and regretful feeling, "Home." He nodded, "Ah, I forgot you weren't from Areagore." Elena quickly changed back to being happy, "I've been practicing my grandmother's spell like crazy!" "I see..."
"We should get going then. You'll definitely see him again, I swear." Azmend smiled sadly, Elena giddily smiled again. "Thank you for helping me! You're a lot nicer when you're not trying to kill me, " she chuckled, "I like you much better like this!" Azmend laughed along with her, "Yes, you were kind to my brother so...I'm sorry, never mind what I said."
Elena responded, "It's okay, we're friends now! That means you can tell me anything. I'm kinda new to the whole friends thing but I've been liking it a lot more lately~" "Yeah..." Azmend stood up from the bench, "Let's find Cole now, then we can get you home...friend." Elena stood up with him, "Yep!"
Then their journey began, they wove through cities and towns all day. Elena sighed, "I don't think we'll ever find hiiim! Cole's so good at hiding, it's actually pretty surprising..." Azmend laughed, "Do you want another ride? Just don't fall asleep again okay?" Elena quickly nodded and they took to the skies.
Forests seemed to overlap and weave together, people were tiny and buildings shrunk with them. Something seemed to catch Azmend's eye and he stopped in his tracks. Elena tried to find what he was looking at but found that Azmend dove back to the ground. He landed abruptly and Elena rolled off of him.
She landed with a thud before she knew it Azmend was rushing to her and he quickly enveloped her into a hug, "I...I'm sorry...." Elena hugged back. "What? It's fine, but why did you-" "Y-You can't see him." he shakily but sternly cut her off.
He let go and looked her straight in the eye, "Promise me you won't see him. You can't see him." Elena shook her head and stood up, she dusted off her cloak."I have to. What are you talking about? You should support me and help me, we're friends now!" Elena pleaded.
Azmend's heart sunk, "It's not like that! I've helped you all I could and I'm helping you by keeping you back, I'm protecting you!" Elena sighed, "That....that doesn't make sense." Azmend sighed, "Such a childish thing to say...Do you trust me? I can tell you why but I don't think you'll like it."
She nodded, "Of course! Please, I need to know. I need to see him!" "Well...alright, Cole's the Dragon King. That's why we wanted him to join the Dragon Resistance so badly. He's must've gone back to the Dragon Kingdom and...and..." Elena reassured him, "Thank you, please continue."
He sighed heavily and tried to smile, "And they'll kill you. Dragons would never let you in there." Elena gasped, "No, no they wo-" He gripped her hand tightly, "M-My first friend...I can't let you..." "We can bargain I'm sure! We can just tell them that I'm friends with Cole!" Azmend stopped her, "Elena he's not stable, dragons don't control their emotions very well. I'm not sure if Cole will even be there to save you, there's layers and layers of guards out there."
"I can sneak in!"
"They're all in their dragon forms! They're in the clouds!"
"I'll find a way! I'll say I'm with you! Maybe...I'm a prisoner!"
"If you were a prisoner you would be dead by now!"
"I'll....I'll"
"Go home...that's the safest thing to do Elena, I'll tell him what happened. I'll tell everyone, even the king." Azmend stopped her. "The king? Oh, I forgot! He's trying to make me join the military! Ooh...I have to head home quick- but Dad...without him I don't have a home..." She managed to exclaim.
Azmend nodded in understanding and reluctantly let her hand go. "I'm sorry." he sadly told her. She gasped and covered her mouth, "No, no! It's uh...it's...everything's alright. I'm okay." "Okay, what would you like to do now?" Azmend asked.
Elena lay down on the grass, "I'm sorry but I really don't know. I don't know if I want to leave yet. My dad loved it here and wanted me to stay forever but..." Azmend sat beside her, "You don't have to leave yet, you have plenty of time to think about it before you go."
"You're right! Thank you Azmend~! I...I can't get so upset like this," she chirped, "I'm glad that you found Cole, even if I didn't see him I know he's safe." "Did you tell him you were leaving? He'll be pretty distraught if you just disappear." Azmend asked.
"I think I told everyone that I wanted to leave..." Elena pondered through her memory. Azmend fought the urge to keep her in Areagore forever, she was his first friend after all. He had gotten much better at not judging other species like he used to and now he wanted to show her that he had changed.
He wanted her to be his master not that...Cole, he ran away from her after all. Azmend wanted her to stay with him but if he said that he would be just like everyone else, he wanted to be different for her. "You can leave, we'll all learn to move on and...just know that you'll be missed." he said.
She smiled at him, no words needed, she showed him that she cared and that's all he ever wanted. It was just like Karzen when they were both younger. He shook off those feelings and enjoyed the moment. "I just hope he's doing okay, he seems to hate the Dragon Kingdom. I don't think he wants to be royalty so I'm not sure why he's even there." Elena stated.
"He was probably caught then, I know tons of dragons who want him back. He's been gone for years after all. I suppose they lost their patience and forced him back." Azmend proclaimed. "Poor Cole." Elena sighed.
Azmend felt a little jealous, he didn't really like Cole. Cole ditched everyone during the war and survived only to leave everyone including his family to die. He refused the Dragon Resistance and criticized their lifestyles. Now Cole had even clouded his first friend's mind, she shouldn't waste her time caring about him.
"Elena, he's not..." he stopped himself, she wouldn't understand."Hm? Sorry, I didn't catch that." Elena said. Azmend covered his face in his hands, "I'm sorry, it was nothing." he lay beside Elena and let his hands fall beside him.
"Alright.I don't want to see Monica, she'll be furious. I um...I actually don't have a place to stay...hehe." she nervously chuckled. "You can stay at my house! I mean...you don't have to. I'm not trying to kidnap you again I swear!" Azmend panicked. Elena laughed, "Wow! Thank you so much!"
He was astonished, she didn't doubt him? "Yeah...let's go then. It's getting dark anyways." he concluded and stood up. He helped her up and turned into a dragon so that he could fly her home. Elena giddily hopped onto him, "Oh, I love riding you! Dragons are amazing!"
Azmend leaped up into the sky and soared just below the clouds. His leather-like wings flapped back and forth skillfully. Elena clung to his neck and adored the lush scenery. Shades of green were pigmented by the darkening sky.
The clouds and sky were tinted shades of orange, yellow, red, pink and led up to purple and blue hues. Her blond hair thrashed behind her and her long cloak swayed with the wind. She couldn't stop smiling and laughing like a child on a Ferris Wheel. Azmend flew for hours and finally spotted their destination.
He swooped down and carefully landed his claws into the grass. Elena happily rode his tail like a slide onto the grass and rolled around. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling as much as she could. Dad would be so happy, she thought, so I should be too!
By the time she opened her eyes she noticed Azmend hovering over her, "S-Sorry, why are you so happy?" She beamed up at him, "Things have been so stressful and sad lately, when you flew me around and I got to look down at the world below I just felt so free! I felt so happy, Azmend!"
"I see...we'll have to fly again then, before you go." he chuckled, "Then you'll forget about everything, forget about Areagore and finally be happy! Just like you wanted."
