Part Sixteen: You Don't Have to Forget Him

They all went home to their cottage, Elena felt empty inside. Everyone here felt like a stranger except for her dad. Nobody talked and everyone had to walk home, nobody knew how to work the bus besides her father. Monica ran up to the door and opened it for the other two, "Thank you, Monica." Elena said. Cole nodded to Monica, "Hey, Elena? Your dad uh...said he wanted you to open your gifts once we got home." Monica stated. "Oh, okay." Elena went upstairs to get the items. She went downstairs carrying her things, "Let me get that for you, master," Cole picked two out of the three things. Once everything was set on the table Elena unwrapped the long pole-shaped one. "It's a staff, Lena!" Monica faked joy, "Don't call me that." Elena coldly responded. She set the long wooden staff on the couch and continued. "How about this one?" Cole asked as he lifted the crate like one, Elena nodded and took it from his hands. It looked like a pet carrier, "Uh...what?" Cole asked. "Familiar...It's a familiar, that's so Bernard," Monica muttered. Elena unlocked the small crate's door and pulled out a small black kitten. "How cute..." Elena tried to smile but started crying instead.

"How did that thing live for so long without food or water?!" Cole whisper/shouted. Monica hit him across the back of his head,"Freakin' magic!" Elena wiped her tears, "S-sorry...I think I'll just g-go now..."she hugged the cat. She turned around and started walking but Cole grabbed her hand and pulled her back, "No master, you can't do this yourself. Yeah you miss him, we all do! Let's work this out together...I'm your friend now and this is what friends are for!" he pleaded. Elena  set down the kitten, "I don't wish to be a burden, I can do this...alone." Monica looked Elena straight in the eye, "You idiot! You're making it harder for yourself, your dad would never let you act like this.  If you won't accept our help for yourself then do it for Bernard!" "I...can't. I'm fine, I'll be fine..."and with that she rushed to her room, running away from her problems again. "ELENA WE ALL MISS HIM! THIS IS SELFISH!YOU FREAKIN' COWARD!"Monica rushed after her but Cole stopped her, "Like you said, we have to let her do this...alone." She reluctantly nodded and watched the kitten stumble in the direction Elena had gone. "She doesn't get it. She just runs away like a coward! I've known that jerk  Bernard for forty years and I'm not being a baby!" Cole looked at her before saying, "You're both dealing with it in different ways and you haven't known him for forty years, he was on Earth for a long time. I know I keep saying that I was Elena's first friend but...I think he was her first." Cole then left to go to his room and change out of his suit. Monica stood there-what if she wasn't as close to Bernard as she had initially thought?

The next day when Cole woke up he noticed that Elena wasn't there for breakfast. "Hey Monica, where's Elena?"Monica lifted her head from her newspaper, "Why should I care? I haven't seen her all day." Cole walked over to the table where his food was and noticed Elena's last gift was still there. "Do you think she's still in her room?" Cole asked, "Cut it out dragon boy, I don't know! I told you I haven't seen her so lay off already!" Monica was so short tempered. Cole ate his breakfast before he hunted down his master. She wasn't in her room and she wasn't downstairs. Cole walked outside, maybe some fresh air would help him think. Then he saw Elena under a tree playing with her cat, she was pretty far away so he doubted she noticed him. He saw her wipe away some tears before scratching her kitten's ear. Cole let out a content sigh, everything was okay again. He knew where his master was and could relax. He decided to sit in the grass and admire the morning scenery. He looked over at Elena and saw that she was making a flower crown, he rolled on his side and took a nap.

He woke to see Elena poking his shoulder, "Are you alright? I walked over here and saw you passed out...why were you outside?" Cole saw that her kitten was in her lap but where did the flower crown go? "Oh, I was wondering where you went so I looked for you, then I saw you out here and decided to sleep for a bit." She giggled, "What's so funny?" Cole asked. "Oh nothing..." Cole sat up and felt something fall off of his head-the flower crown. "Hey...when did I get this?" as soon as Cole said that Elena started running and Cole started chasing her. The kitten struggled to keep up so Elena picked it up. After a while of running Elena sat down and raised her arms as if she was caught by the police, "Okay, I give up!" Cole laughed, "Took you long enough!" he sat down next to her and put the flower crown on her head, "That's better." Elena  laughed and walked back to the cottage with her kitten and Cole following close behind. After all of that she was feeling a little better, then she kept remembering her dad and everything he'd done for her. Elena teared up a little and Cole put a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "You don't have to forget him, just learn to adjust and keep living." Monica walked in, "Finally, you guys are back!" Elena smiled and nodded, "Dragon Boy, she has emotions!"Monica laughed. "Yes, we saw them before her father's unfortunate passing." "Woah, you like ruined the entire moment!" Monica replied. Elena let some tears fall, her dad would love this and he would probably be hugging Elena while adoring her new kitten. These tears felt different-like tears of joy. She gave a faint smile as she remembered her dad and his constant antics. Like when he refused to pay at the hotel or when he caught her with The Forgotten Mage's Diary. Elena sniffled and hugged her kitten again. "You're okay right Elena?" Monica asked, "Yeah...I just miss him.." Elena responded. "Um...you don'y have to forget..." Monica mumbled. "Uh,what?" Elena responded.

"You don't have to forget him."
