Part One: New Beginnings

They had finally arrived at the airport after the long ride and were now seated on the airplane, Elena and her dad stayed quiet and she couldn't help but feel uncomfortable. Normally she could be so open around her dad but things felt different after he started wanting to become a doctor. "Honey, the plane landed," Elena's dad groggily shook her with all the strength he could muster, now it was five in the morning and he hadn't even slept for over twenty minutes. "Huh?Oh, yeah okay," Elena stifled a yawn with her hand covering her mouth. One by one passengers filed out of the plane while shuttling their carry-ons. "Hey dad? How far is the house?" Elena's voice came out husky, she hadn't spoken much for two days straight and by now it felt like a foreign sensation. "Oh sorry Lena it's gonna' be another hour or so before we can track down your grandma's place,"he stated. Elena had forgotten that was her grandma's house before, ever since she died Elena just forgot about how her dad was from Seattle in the first place. She never got to know her Grandma very well. Her dad saw her deep expression,"On the bright side we get to have tons of McDonald's during the move!" her dad said as he lugged their bags down the aisle. Elena let a chuckle slide by, that was the dad she knew.  They slowly moved forward through the line until they eventually made their way into the airport itself. After a while they found themselves in her dad's car driving down an unknown path being guided by only a vague GPS. Elena soon became tired and felt her eyelids droop,"Man, just sleep already kiddo," her dad chuckled heartily,"You look like a zombie right now!" "Oh, I uh...didn't notice,"she sighed and finally let herself go to sleep.

"Hey, kiddo!" Elena's dad was shaking her shoulder from the open car door, the sunlight was really bright when Elena woke up,"Are we here already?""You betcha!" It took a moment for her to realize just how worn out her dad was, his eyes held bags under them and his voice just sounded pathetic by now. Elena shakily stepped outside and let the scene before her sink in ; this new house looked nothing like what she expected. When Elena thought of Seattle she honestly just thought of grumpy old people drinking cafe coffee in the rain (so stereotypical, bro!). Somehow it warmed her heart to think about how her grandma called this same place home not too long ago. "Come on kiddo, the movers will have everything here by Tuesday so we're stuck with what we brought in our carry-ons for now," her dad said as he lead her into the house. It wasn't an apartment but a cozy two story house, it was pretty cute. "There's a good school for you close by, too," her dad was trying hard to spark a conversation but Elena just wasn't feeling it. She quickly found the bedrooms and assumed the master bedroom was for her dad so she tossed her bags into the other room. She let out a sigh she didn't realize she was holding in and proceeded to throw herself onto the bed. Elena took one of her bags and used it as a makeshift pillow, she let her sandy-blonde hair sprawl across the foreign mattress. This was the start of a new chapter in her life but was she even ready for it? She would just have to tough it out.

As she observed her surroundings she noticed a closet in the corner of the room, she got up and let her curiosity take over. The closet just felt out of place to her so she opened it only to find that there was a small door on the back wall of it. A small golden handle with a dragon emblem seemed to be calling her name. Elena wrapped her hand around it and pulled it back to come upon a red curtain, as she pulled the cloth back she came upon a bookcase filled with old and worn books. She found one that caught her interest labeled "The Forgotten Mage's Diary" and underneath it was the author's name-Beatrice Andersen, her grandmother.
