Chapter-2

Chiron was having a pretty normal day for a 4254-year-old mutant, surrounded by university students.

He had to admit, it was quite amusing to teach his students about those so-called Greek and Roman 'myths,' especially when he featured in some of them. He could imagine Athena or Dionysus throw a fit because for all their contributions, they were only remembered as stories no one believed in except for a few government agencies.

As he threw one last look at a book of Latin myths, depicting him as a half-human, half-horse, a chuckle escaped his mouth. Seriously! He could only be a horse at a time not both at the same time. At least they got a proper description of Lupa, although they failed to mention she could turn into a 40-year-old woman.

Although his job as a Latin and History professor at the Westminster University was purely coincidental, he had somehow became the mutant godfather for a bunch of mutants who happened to be his students. Heck, apparently his reputation preceded him because a disproportionate number of mutants joined this university because of his presence. As far as he knew he was the only CNLP-2 mutant in the university but if he remembered accurately, about 20 mutants were under his tutelage.

He wheeled himself out of his class at the end of the day, a few stragglers were still in the corridors. He remembered the times when his wheelchair attracted strange looks from some of his mutant students, but he waved of their confusion through the story of how he was paralyzed from the waist below after a road accident.

As he made towards his home, an hour's drive from his workplace in San Francisco, he found an.... interesting package at his doorstep. Well, more specifically a baby.

Ok, Chiron knew that normally infants wouldn't be abandoned at the doorsteps of random people and he couldn't recollect any pregnant acquaintances he had. So, he did the most natural thing in those situations. He took the baby home.

It was swaddled in flannel with soft brown hair, sleeping peacefully. Honestly, Chiron didn't know what to do with it. He had been a bachelor for all his life and the most experience he had with working with kids were training teenagers to fight wars or teaching sleep deprived young adults Ancient History and Latin.

A thick envelope fell to the ground from the child's flannels. After precariously setting it on his couch, he got the envelope. A somewhat letter addressed to him was written in an elegant script.

Dear Chiron,

I too am like you, but due to a few precarious family situations, I have to abandon my baby. Her father isn't pleased that my child doesn't have any powers similar to him and had asked me to dispose of her. But as any mother will know, I could never be possible of committing such a crime. I hope you will take care of my baby. Her name's Hestia. She is a wonderful child. Love her and take care of her as your own. I hope you can officially adopt her.

Thank you.

Well, he thought, apparently, he was a father now.

The girl's mother was right. Hestia was a lovely child. And despite a bit of embarrassing fumbling, he had to admit, he did ace in raising a child, mostly.

The adoption procedure did take a while with some attempts to trace her parents. But after revealing the somewhat altered version of her mother's letter, Hestia became Hestia Brunner.

Chiron definitely was worried that the girl was named after a mythological mutant, especially with a name that was so old fashioned but he had to respect her mother's wishes.

He managed to take care of her after pulling a few strings of parent mutants whom he had taught who gave him plenty of helpful advice. Although Hestia didn't live up to the horror stories of a few parents that included vomiting and excessive wailing, he did find himself having a lot less sleep those days.

Hestia wasn't a problem child and attained all of her milestones at the perfect times. In all, a wonderful baby. He had to feel proud of himself as he had managed to become a properly functioning parent after 4 millennia and being crippled. There was a little thing he had to watch out for. Hestia's powers.

Chiron knew that she definitely wasn't having the Athena gene or the PRCLM-3 mutation, the former because she had brown eyes instead of grey and he knew personally knew the hereditary line of the PRCLM-3 mutations, none of them in the USA. However, the girl had a tendency to look and giggle at the fireplace. She probably had a strain of the Hephaestus gene.

All was well, with Chiron juggling his university classes, his students' problems, his tiny secret, and Hestia.

That is till the second baby came on his doorstep.

The baby Demeter looked extremely different from her sister, with blonde hair and blue eyes. There was a similar envelope to Hestia's with her as well. By this point, Chiron was getting fed up of the Ancient Greek names. The only reason he even let the child keep the name was to respect her mother's decision. Apparently, this child too was forced by her husband to abandon because there were no similarities in their powers.

Chiron had no idea who these children or their parents were, but he definitely concerned of their psychopathic father with a fetish for abandon children with no mercy. Well, not abandon but kill. But there was absolutely no way to trace them.

But on the other hand, he needed to know whether they were 4 other children remaining, if their mother was intent on continuing the mythological mutant name string.

Demeter too was like Hestia, although more intent on plants. After a lengthy adoption procedure, she too became his daughter. By this point, he had started entrusting the girls to Lupa for babysitting, although he was concerned whether they may get more wolf-like.

Another update in his life was that Hestia seemed to be a whole new type of mutant. Chiron had heard of instances when a mutant had totally different types of genes but had rarely met them in his entire life. He had initially suspected Hestia to have Hephaestus genes, something that got further suspected when a very flustered Lupa informed she had crawled into her fireplace and was playing with her dolls happily in the fire. But the weird instances when food she didn't like turned into whole new food got him confused.

In the 1970s, you usually didn't see three babies being consecutively left at a crippled man's doorstep in a span of 3 years. But that is exactly what happened to History and Latin professor of Westminster university Chiron Brunner.

This time, the baby's name was Hera, leaving Chiron to scratch his head on who gave their mother the brilliant idea to name her children like this. If there was a Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus, then he would have to assign nicknames so they will not get bullied.

Also, it is official, 2-year-old Hestia is not a normal mutant. It should be physically impossible for a mutant for their powers to manifest this early. There was absolutely no category Hestia could be placed under, especially since Hestia could make fire into a solid object, summon it with her will and make food appear and disappear, all as a toddler!

Demeter meanwhile seemed to babble to plants rather than her sister. As for Hera, two years of peace went out of the window with Hera loving to wail her way through any problem. The girl had a pair of lungs as it was very evident. But Chiron loved them all despite not his biologically. Heck, even Hestia's first words were 'dada'.

Some of his students often come to visit him, mostly mutants although he suspects it is mostly to visit the girls, since he had made it very evident how sweet they were a bit too much. Ai Zhang, a female transfer students from Canada for Westminster university was a regular visitor. Her family had the rare PRCLM-3 mutation, with her regularly shapeshifting for the girls in his backyard.

Hera loved her a lot, especially when Ai turned into a cow to play with her. Chiron didn't teach her as she was pursuing courses to be an educational instructor. She had arrived that year and was immediately redirected by the mutant fraternity in the university towards him.

Again, Chiron thought his life was good till the boys came.
